NEWSLETTER – MARCH-APRIL 2013 ISSUE 15

From the Rector... Parish Finances show a small surplus for 2012 Friends in Christ, Christians are an Easter People. The message of resurrection lies at the heart of the Faith, but what is its significance for us? Hope springs to mind: we can have hope for the future and indeed the present when we come to see that Jesus conquered death not so that he would complete the greatest miracle ever, but he did so to bring us back into a fellowship with God and his purposes which we, humanity, have damaged. But these are all ‘Church-speak’. How do we make them real for others? Paul said in 1 Cor. 13 ‘faith, hope and love abide, these three, and the greatest of these is love’. For every life that is preached into heaven, there will be ten who have come to faith in Jesus through the example of others whose life shines out as one where Christ has made a difference. We can all do that, and let us set to the task in earnest in a society that seems to have lost the plot and is increasingly bereft of moral guidance in the way it lives its life. Let’s be ‘an Easter People’, sharing the importance of Christ’s resurrection for our lives from the pulpit of our daily lives. May we all come to an awareness as we walk with Christ to Calvary and beyond, of the God who is hope, and who in his love calls us all to faith in him. Norman

Sheila was an active parishioner since her marriage and was engaged in many parish activities including the Table Tennis Club and the Mothers’ Union, as well as in many activities in the wider community. While she had been ill for some time, she was able to remain at home and her passing came unexpectedly. The full church at removal and funeral spoke vividly of the esteem in which she was held, and we offer our sympathy and love to her sons Alan (Millview) and Colin (Cork) and their families as well as to her brothers Maurice (Edmonton) and Fred (Tullamore). 24th Jan, Christina Isabella (‘Betty’) Grimson, formerly of ‘Homefield’, . After the death of her husband, Bill, in 1991, Betty moved to Rathmines to be near her son, Bill and his family, and when she died after a long illness, it was in Rathmines that her funeral service was held before interment in St Andrew’s. We offer our love and sympathy to Bill (), and her daughters Gillian (Bristol) and Carole (Cambridge), and to all the family in their loss. Sympathy We offer our sympathy to Beverlie O’Flaherty, Gartan, on the death of her mother.

Holy Week & Easter Holy Week is the most solemn season of the Christian Year, holding before us the sacrifice of Jesus and then leading us towards the centre of the Christian Way, the Resurrection which lies at the very centre of Christian thinking. This year, the preacher Monday-Wednesday in St Andrew’s at 8.00 pm is our good neighbour, Rev Jim Carroll, Rector of & , and on Thursday and Friday, the Rector will conclude our pilgrimage. There will also be celebrations of Holy Communion on Monday to Thursday at 7.30 am, a Children’s Service in St Doulagh’s on Good Friday at 10.00 am and a ‘Holy Hour’ service of readings and music in St Andrew’s at 2.00 pm. On Easter Day itself, there will be a Daybreak celebration of Holy Communion in St Doulagh’s at 6.00 am, as well as celebrations at the normal morning times for worship in both churches.

Select Vestry At its February meeting, the Select Vestry had a busy agenda, which included setting the wheels in motion for the appointment of a new Youth Worker to replace Tom Tate. The Vestry also approved a draft budget for 2013. Our parish finances are not as healthy as might appear at first glance, the accounts always reflecting the considerable number of donations made at year- end, and it will be necessary this year to engage in mid-year fund-raising again. There will be a Table Quiz in the Cricket Club on Friday 8th March to which all are welcome, and we will also be having a Gift Day on May 19th beginning with a United Service at 11.30 am at which the Preacher will be Ven. John Scott, formerly Archdeacon of Dromore. This will be followed by a Parish Lunch. Full details next month.
