Some Notes and Comments AGM of the Association The AGM took place on the 12 th April 2013. There was a good attendance of members. Reports from the chairman, secretary, treasurer environment and planning officer were presented and a new committee was elected for the coming year. No 52 June 2013 The formal meeting was followed by members question time. Issues raised were -the lack of proper pedestrian facilities in Rathgar, the new A view from the Chairman John McCarthy property tax, planning issues and enforcement, the state of pavements after last Autumn’s leaf fall and the continuing problem of dog fouling. It is that time of year when we should be out enjoying our gardens, our leafy suburbs, linear parks and river banks. Migration Patterns in Dublin County Borough N. JOHNSON N the last 15 years Dublin has undergone a dramatic change, from the fairly sleepy introverted capital of the 26 counties, it has been transformed into a relatively I sophisticated and increasingly cosmopolitan financial and commercial centre. The large demand for office space has led to a change in function of an ever-growing number of buildings in the central city area, while the steadily increasing population is being housed and rehoused in new suburban estates around and beyond the city perimeter. Change has been rapid and this study, limited to that area included in the County Borough due to lack of adequate data, concentrates on certain facets of the city in explanation of the continuous movements of its population. It will show how, as in the majority of cities in the Western Hemisphere, the ecological process of invasion and succession determined the present composition of Dublin and it will outline along what path, without official intervention, its future pattern of growth may proceed. The Growth of Modern Dublin Urban ecologists1 describe the usual process of a city's growth in terms of a centrifugal process. The continuous pressure of migrant population on central city accommodation causes the residents to move to the periphery of the city in order to escape the encroach ing slums. The Women were Worse than the Men: Crime and Society in Dublin during 1916 The mobs that looted Dublin’s city centre in 1916 have entered the mythology of the Rising just as robustly as the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army and, as far as I am aware, it was the only occasion in the history of the capital, and possibly Ireland, when more women were convicted of criminal offences than men, hence the title of this talk. However I also want to say something about the wider impact the First World War had on crime in the city The Easter Rising made Dublin unique in the United Kingdom in that it was the only city where fighting took place and the general breakdown in law and order created new opportunities for breaking the law, just as the Defence of the Realm Act that was passed on the outbreak of the Great War created new laws to break. The incidence of serious crime by juvenile gangs, often abetted by adults, such as housebreaking and robbery of coal trains, became commonplace, along with fraudulent claims for separation allowances, theft of military property and greatly increased desertion rates from the British armed forces. At the same time the large scale recruitment of young adult males from working class districts into the armed forces saw a reduction in the pool of potential adult offenders and a decline in the population of Mountjoy Prison. But to return to the looters: newspapers characterised them in vivid terms that are remembered to this day. The Irish Times, which managed to publish almost uninterruptedly throughout the fighting, reported on Tuesday, 25 April, 1916, that on the previous night ‘Shop windows in North Earl Street were smashed, and the shops were looted. -

WINTER CONFERENCE 2017 PSYCHOSIS, SOMATIZATION & SOCIETY 16TH & 17TH NOVEMBER DUNBOYNE CASTLE HOTEL, CO MEATH 13.5 external CPD credits (Thursday: 7.5 credits Friday 6 credits) WELCOME Dear colleagues Our College is growing and so is our conference. Both depend on the spirit of volunteerism of our members. Much of the planning, organisation and inspiration of the conference has been achieved by members in their own time. I would especially like to thank the conference academic committee, who guided me and tolerated crackly teleconference lines! My wish for the conference is that the spirit of volunteerism begins to see rewards from the College. I hope the programme will help us work towards a greater understanding of where we are as a profession, and in turn, enhance the College's ability to advocate on our behalf and our patients. As at all conferences, there is informal networking. Hopefully this will develop into a formal network with the ability to use the conference and College structures to achieve what psychiatry in Ireland needs to be excellent. In the future, I would like to continue a number of themes, particularly through the parallel sessions. Professional Competence for a while now has been a permanent slot. I'm hoping that Ethics, Law and a session on how to support our own mental health will also be regular topics on the programme. The poster exhibition is another fixed slot which I think works well as an opportunity to showcase and explore psychiatry beyond service provision. There has been discussion about changing the format of the poster display and I'd welcome any suggestions.
