November 2020 Issue Organic apples, from Japan, are also known as Tokyo Rose, Tohoku No. 3, and Prime Red. It is a hybrid between the Worcester and apples. Akane apples have a bright red smooth skin, and green-yellow streaks. The flesh is white, juicy, and firm with a blend of sweet and sharp flavor. Akane apples are available in the late summer, and early fall. They are great for eating fresh, and can also be used for baking, and desserts as they hold their shape well. Choose Akane apples that are firm with smooth, clean skin, and bright red, and avoid those with soft or dark sports. They can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Silken apples, developed in BC, Canada, are a cross between the and Sunrise apples. They have a translucent creamy skin color, sometimes with a slight pink blush. They are well known for their crisp texture, and sweet flavor. Silken apples have a firm, crisp, and juicy white flesh with a hint of sweet honey taste. They are mainly used for fresh eating, and can also be added to salads or desserts. After harvest, they can be kept for up to 4 weeks in the refrigerator.

Sunrise apples, developed in BC, Canada, are a cross between the McIntosh and apples. They are a medium to large that has a yellow-base skin covered with bright red stripes. Their flesh is white, crispy, and juicy, with a sweet, and tart flavor. Sunrise apples are great for snacking, and can also be used for baking, juicing, salads, pies, and sauces. Choose firm, and unblemished Sunrise apples with tight, and shiny skin. They can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Fuyu Persimmons Persimmons are orange-red colored fruits that are available starting in late September. They reach their peak in October through December. Sweet, and delicious persimmons are rich in health promoting nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers, and anti-oxidants. Fuyu persimmons are sweeter than Hachiya persimmons, and can be eaten while still firm.

Look for persimmons with taut, glossy skin, avoiding fruit with soft spots or bruises. Persimmons may be kept longer if they are stored at room temperature. Pomegranates Pomegranates Pomegranates are one of the world’s most popular, and healthiest fruits. Punicalagins are extremely powerful antioxidants found in the juice and peel of a pomegranate. Pomegranate juice has been analyzed to have greater antioxidant capacity than red wine, grape juice, cranberry juice, green tea, and acai juice. They’re also high in potassium, vitamins A, C, and E, folic acid, and fiber.

How to de-seed a pomegranate? 1. Cut around the circumference of pomegranate, pry apart the fruit with your hands into two sections. 2. To loosen the grip on the arils, hold one half of the pomegranate, and gently pull the sides out from the center until you hear the inner ribbing crack. 3. Turn the half upside down, and gently tap it with a wooden spoon.
