LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of James T. Molloy, distin- guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great State of New York; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy died on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the age of 75; and WHEREAS, Son of Matthew Molloy and Catherine Hayden Molloy, James T. Molloy was born in 1936, in South Buffalo, New York; and WHEREAS, A graduate of Bishop Timon High School in Buffalo, New York, James T. Molloy worked on the Waterfront Grain elevators after high school; and WHEREAS, Following in his father's footsteps, James T. Molloy joined the Buffalo Fire Department, becoming a member of AFL-CIO, the Interna- tional Brotherhood of Longshoremen, and the International Association of Fire Fighters; and WHEREAS, While at the Buffalo Fire Department, James T. Molloy paid his way through school at Canisius College, a Jesuit institution in Buffalo, New York; and WHEREAS, After pursuing studies at St. John's University Law School, James T. Molloy worked as a teacher in the cities of Buffalo and Lacka- wanna; he also worked in the office of Erie County District Attorney where he met his wife, Roseanne; and WHEREAS, At age 27, James T. Molloy became the youngest democrat in New York State to serve as Party Zone Chairman; and WHEREAS, In 1968, James T. Molloy went to D.C. at the invi- tation of Congressman John Rooney to work in the house finance office; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy was elected to the prestigious post of House Doorkeeper where he served from 1974 to 1994; during this time, James Molloy served as a primary aide to House Speakers , Tip O'Neil, James Wright, and ; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy was the last of 30 people to hold the posi- tion of Doorkeeper from its establishment in 1789 to its elimination in 1995; he served as House Doorkeeper from the 93rd Congress to the 103rd Congress; and WHEREAS, In his capacity as Doorkeeper, James T. Molloy coordinated seventy-one joint sessions of Congress, introduced all visiting heads of state, and introduced six presidents; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy served during the presidencies of , , , , George H. W. Bush, and ; and WHEREAS, For nearly 30 years, James T. Molloy was one of the finest public servants in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy distinguished himself in his profession and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of his community; and WHEREAS, This remarkable man was awarded the President's Award from the New York State Federation of Police, an Honorary Degree from Canisi- us College in 1995, the Outstanding Citizen Award from New York State AFL-CIO, and the Senate Youth Alumni Association Outstand- ing Service Award; and WHEREAS, James T. Molloy's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita- ble and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of compassion, James T. Molloy leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to mourn the death of James T. Molloy, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to the family of James T. Molloy.
