GLO was the first law firm established in China, in 1984, and converted to a private partnership in 2011. Practice areas are quite broad and include mergers & acquisitions, dispute resolution, maritime law, and much more.

King & Wood Mallesons http://www.kingandwood.com/ Nature of Placement: Full service law firm Where: Beijing or Shanghai King & Wood is a large law firm in China, providing comprehensive legal solutions to multinational and Chinese clients across a broad range of cross-border and domestic transactions. Practice areas include corporate law, finance, securities & capital marketing, international trade, dispute resolution, and intellectual property. All Lewis & Clark externs who have worked at King & Wood have had some education or professional background in business.

ZY Partners http://www.zypartners.com Nature of Placement: Full service law firm Where: Beijing ZY Partners’ practice areas include intellectual property, antitrust, labor & employment, corporate affairs & finance, international trade, and litigation and arbitration. The firm’s IP practice is regularly ranked as a leader by major IP publications in Asia. A science or engineering background may be preferred by the IP practice, although IP coursework at Lewis & Clark could be a substitute on a case-by-case basis.

Lewis & Clark externs have typically worked in the mergers & acquisitions group, and have obtained experience in such diverse areas of law as corporate and securities law, environmental law, and international finance.

Enviro Legal Defence Firm (ELDF) Nature of Placement: Environmental law firm Where: Delhi Led by Supreme Court Advocate Sanjay Upadhyay, ELDF is India’s oldest environmental law firm and one of its most prominent. Advocate Upadhyay is on the forefront of environmental defense and litigation in India and is known internationally for cases involving renewable energy, forest law, and more. Fox Mandal Little http://www.foxmandal.com/ Nature of Placement: Full service law firm Where: Delhi Fox Mandal is India’s oldest law firm (having once served as a legal advisor to the East India Company), and one of its most prestigious, with offices across India and in other countries. Fox Mandal has an extremely broad range of practice areas focused on commercial matters.

Human Rights Legal Network (HRLN) Nature of Placement: Human Rights NGO Where: Delhi HRLN is a collective of lawyers and social activists dedicated to the use of the legal system to advance human rights in India and the subcontinent. HRLN provides pro bono legal services, conducts public interest litigation, engages in advocacy, conducts legal awareness programs, investigates violations, and publishes “know your rights” materials. Lewis & Clark externs have been deeply involved in the full array of work done at HRLN.

Shyam Divan Nature of Placement: Civil Litigation Where: Delhi Senior Supreme Court Advocate Divan runs a busy and prestigious practice litigating only in India’s highest courts. A world-class environmental lawyer, Senior Advocate Divan has expanded his practice considerably to include all cases that can be considered “civil.” Past externs have worked on diverse cases ranging from civil rights issues to animal jurisprudence. Lewis & Clark students have enjoyed the breadth and depth of the hands-on experience at Shyam Divan and have praised the mentorship they received as externs.

Somandy & Associates Nature of Placement: Full service law firm Where: Mumbai Somandy & Associates is a cutting-edge small firm with a wide range of practice areas including labor and employment law, civil litigation, real estate, and insurance. Past externs have engaged in a broad range of high-level work including contract drafting, international legal research, and more.

South Asia Human Rights Documentation Center (SAHRDC) Nature of Placement: Human Rights NGO Where: Delhi Externs at SAHRDC work directly with the Executive Director Ravi Nair. This is an organization in southern Delhi dedicated to documenting alleged human rights abuses. The last Lewis & Clark extern recommended this placement to students interested in improving their writing and research skills, and the possibility of writing about human rights violations to an international audience.
