From what microphone and preamplifiers to use, to what steps to take during the editing, mixing, and mastering processes. Finished with a look at pitch detection algorithms and how they work, and a little bit of experimentation with my own algorithm and program. 1. Introduction We live in a world that is filled with music. This music comes in different varieties ranging from hip-hop and rap to country and classical. One genre of music that seems to be on the rise now a day is that of a cappella, or singing without instruments. With shows such as America’s Got Talent showcasing collegiate a cappella groups, and shows like the Sing Off that focus on a cappella singing, it seems that collegiate a cappella groups are reaching a peak in popularity. With a cappella groups being formed, and music being performed, there is also a rising demand to record their music. This presents an interesting challenge. Getting your a cappella group’s song recorded professionally can be costly, and on college student budgets it can be hard to afford. That being said, I suggest that there is a solution to this problem. -

CLACS is located in the Rhodes Suite at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Highlights of this year include welcoming a new Visiting Associate Professor, Erica Durante, a scholar of Latin American literature who has developed new regular courses – Introduction to Latin America and a capstone course for advanced undergraduate researchers and writers – and offers additional electives on globalized Latin American literature. In addition, we welcomed three Cogut Visiting Professors in Latin American Studies: the Brazilian social psychologist Vera Paiva, the Venezuelan literature scholar Vicente Lecuna, and the Argentine political scientist Lucas González. Each taught a course in LACA focused on his or her own research specialty, exposing Brown students to international perspectives and materials. Furthermore, two scholars from the Universidad Nacional de San Martín in Argentina joined us this fall through the MOU Brown holds with their institution – Cecilia Rocha, a Uruguayan Ph.D. -

Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Updated October 17, 2017 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44094 Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Summary Bangladesh (the former East Pakistan) is a Muslim-majority nation in South Asia, bordering India, Burma, and the Bay of Bengal. It is the world’s eighth most populous country with nearly 160 million people living in a land area about the size of Iowa. It is an economically poor nation, and it suffers from high levels of corruption. In recent years, its democratic system has faced an array of challenges, including political violence, weak governance, poverty, demographic and environmental strains, and Islamist militancy. The United States has a long-standing and supportive relationship with Bangladesh, and it views Bangladesh as a moderate voice in the Islamic world. In relations with Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, the U.S. government, along with Members of Congress, has focused on a range of issues, especially those relating to economic development, humanitarian concerns, labor rights, human rights, good governance, and counterterrorism. The Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) dominate Bangladeshi politics. When in opposition, both parties have at times sought to regain control of the government through demonstrations, labor strikes, and transport blockades, as well as at the ballot box. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been in office since 2009, and her AL party was reelected in January 2014 with an overwhelming majority in parliament—in part because the BNP, led by Khaleda Zia, boycotted the vote. The BNP has called for new elections, and in recent years, it has organized a series of blockades and strikes. -

Martin All Rights Reserved ii MARTIN, KARL W., Ph.D., August 2018 Education, Health and Human Services EXPLORING CURRICULUM LEADERSHIP CAPACITY-BUILDING THROUGH BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE: A CURRERE CASE STUDY (473 pp.) My dissertation joins a vibrant conversation with James G. Henderson and colleagues, curriculum workers involved with leadership envisioned and embodied in his Collegial Curriculum Leadership Process (CCLP). Their work, “embedded in dynamic, open-ended folding, is a recursive, multiphased process supporting educators with a particular vocational calling” (Henderson, 2017). The four key Deleuzian “folds” of the process explore “awakening” to become lead professionals for democratic ways of living, cultivating repertoires for a diversified, holistic pedagogy, engaging in critical self- examinations and critically appraising their professional artistry. In “reactivating” the lived experiences, scholarship, writing and vocational calling of a brilliant Greek and Latin scholar named Marya Barlowski, meanings will be constructed as engendered through biographical narrative and currere case study. Grounded in the curriculum leadership “map,” she represents an allegorical presence in the narrative. Allegory has always been connected to awakening, and awakening is a precursor for capacity-building. The research design (the precise way in which to study this ‘problem’) will be a combination of historical narrative and currere. This collecting and constructing of Her story speaks to how the vision of leadership isn’t completely new – threads of it are tied to the past. -

AREA BY Lucilia V. Tremura ABSTRACT The study of transnational migrant Brazilian women in “pink collar jobs” in the Greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area comprises thirty-four Brazilian women who chose the United States as their place to be called home. It is termed transnational because of the permanent ties connecting these women to their country of origin, Brazil, and their country of adoption, the United States. The expression “pink collar jobs” indicates low paid jobs, mainly performed by women, no expertise necessary, in the service sector. The Washington D.C. metropolitan area has become a new destination for immigrants with a large concentration of Latin Americans. Brazilian presence is among these diverse groups of immigrants, with an increasing participation on the market. This research focuses on transnational migration in women‟s context, with all the nuances that involve the process of migration and incorporation into the labor market. Three research questions explore the topic: ii 1. Why do Brazilian women engage in transnational migration from Brazil to the United States? 1. a. How do social networks affect their transnational migration? 2. How do the social construction of gender and ethnicity influence the occupational choices of this group of Brazilian women, in light of their backgrounds and the job perspectives they anticipated? 3. In what ways do pink collar jobs shape their identity, social interaction and job satisfaction? The answers to these questions delineate the main characteristics, aspirations and satisfactions of these migrant workers as they embrace the United States as their new home. -

Leading Congregational Singing LEADING AS A VOCALIST - Joyce Poley DEVELOPING A STYLE Song/hymn leading is an important skill that can make an enormous difference to the way a congregation sings. If the song leader is primarily a vocalist, there are a number of qualities that are important for success: having enthusiasm for singing; being able to establish a good rapport with the congregation; being comfortable with your own voice; having accurate pitch and a pleasing vocal quality; being excited about introducing new ideas and repertoire. These attributes will help ensure a good singing experience for both the leader and the congregation. Song/hymn leaders use a variety of approaches when leading the congregation, and no single approach or style is “right”. What is important is to develop a style that is unique to your own personality and comfort level. The following are some things to consider: • Energy & enthusiasm Probably nothing affects your success as a song leader as much as your own energy and enthusiasm. People respond to those who love what they do; enthusiasm truly is contagious. Those who already enjoy singing will simply become even more enthusiastic; those who are more reluctant, or feel they can’t sing, will want to be a part of all this positive energy. The more encouragement they get from the leader, the better they will sing. The better they sing, the more confident they become, and the more willing to try new things. Enjoy yourself and be at ease, and they will journey almost any distance with you into the music.
