WWW.JUGGLE.ORG Page 2 THE INTERNATIONAL JUGGLERS’ ASSOCIATION June 2015 Candidates for Member of the IJA Board of Directors and Their Candidacy Statements Noel Yee My Name is Noel Yee and I have served on the Board of the IJA for the past two years. I am a juggler/ flow artists and am also the flow show director of the fund the flow arts 501c3. I have learned so much being a part of this board and participating in the board meetings of the IJA. I helped facilitate the IJA flow tricks of the month in 2014, co-directed the shows at the 2014 IJA festival along with Erin Stephens and traveled to Quebec for a site visit as the IJA Board Representative for the 2015 IJA festival. I believe that being nominated for my second term i would be a continued asset to the IJA Board. Plans for this next term are to gather strong board members that can attend regular meetings, support youth in juggling and I am very interested in learning more about the stage competition and the inner workings of it. I am proud to have represented the IJA for the past two years as a board member and would be honored if nominated to do it for two more. Marvin Ong My name is Marvin Ong, I was born and raised in Malaysia, I grew up there until I was 21 years old before I moved to Los Angeles. After I moved to America, I had a really rough time searching for a community, finding purpose and finding a sense of belonging. After 4 years being in America, I found glowsticking through the electronic music scene, from there I found poi, and from poi I found Firedrums in 2010. Firedrums is one of the oldest fire festival here in America. Firedrums changed my life. I was expose to the fire spinning community and learned more in depth about prop manipulation in the larger scale. Firedrums was where I was exposed to 'contemporary juggling' or manipulation. I saw a french juggler named Valery Imus from the Visual Juggling Project that was created later on by Raphael Cargo (NetJuggler). I was inspired and was definitely intrigued on the style and way he was working the clubs, unlike anything I have ever seen before. Not too long after, I got myself a pair of clubs and also was ready to take on prop manipulation full on. In 2012. I managed to start an online prop shop with my brother and making 'juggling my full time gig. Since then I probably have attended close to 100 fire / juggling festivals around the world. One IJA and one EJC. Im on the way heading to EJC Italy again this year. I feel my main passion is to be the person I wish I met when I moved to America 10 years ago. And through prop manipulation I use it as a tool to build communities globally. With my experience and passion towards the arts, I will be a huge asset to IJA Board. Shivella Schwab Hello, My name is Shivella (shu-vay-la) Schwab, and I have a passion for club passing, unicycling, and my family. We live in the southeast, and regularly attend festivals and juggling club meetings. In 2001, as a learning 3-ball juggler, I attended my first festival, the Atlanta Groundhogs Day juggling festival. It was at that same festival, in 2011, that I met my husband, and we now have a son. My experiences include being a member of the board for a local 501c3 running club for many years, organizing and directing large and small sporting events as a profession, and as a corporate Emcee/DJ. I enjoy live event planning, connecting with people, and three count feeds. It is my hope that through some of my life adventures and experiences, I will have some resources and knowledge that will benefit the IJA and its members. Additionally, I am always excited to learn new things and meet more people. WWW.JUGGLE.ORG Page 3 THE INTERNATIONAL JUGGLERS’ ASSOCIATION June 2015 Finalists for the Stage Championships at the 2015 IJA Festival Here are the finalists that you will see on stage in the Championships at the IJA fest in July. Individuals In 2011, Yu Kato (Japan) won first prize in the Japan high school juggling competition. The following year, he won fourth prize in the Japanese Juggling Festival competition. A part of his act, influenced by Komei Aoki, mixes cigar box juggling with dance. Yusaku Mochizuki (Japan) was born in Shizuoka, Japan. He started juggling when he was studying at Tokyo Art School, where he presented his sensational act combining juggling with tap dancing and visual art. He is now working with the performance group called Enra, a world-renowned company that mixes visual art, dance, and juggling. He has enjoyed presenting his act on TV and at festivals, theaters, and events all over the world, including the Cannes International Film Festival in 2015 and Shizuoka International Buskers Festival in 2014. For him, juggling is not just entertainment, but also a way to express himself that merges art, sports, and performing arts. The theme of his championships routine is gravity, and the visual and sound effects will leave the audience roaring. Ryuhan (Daisuke Hagiwara) (Japan) has been juggling for 16 years. He is from Shizuoka, Japan. This is his fourth IJA festival and his second time competing in the Stage Championships. He is known as a cigar box juggler, but this time, instead of using cigar boxes, he's using a new type of box. Kento Tanioka (Japan) was born January 10, 2000. Recently he has been concentrating on his solo practice and working hard to make progress with numbers. Kentaro Tsuchiya (Japan) from Shizuoka, Japan: "Have you ever seen juggling like this? My performance is called 'The Art of Foot Juggling.' Please enjoy this!" Yosuke Ubukata (Japan): This is my first IJA championships and my first time in Canada. I've been juggling diabolo for four years and enjoy using bearings.
