    Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Updated October 17, 2017 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44094 Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Summary Bangladesh (the former East Pakistan) is a Muslim-majority nation in South Asia, bordering India, Burma, and the Bay of Bengal. It is the world’s eighth most populous country with nearly 160 million people living in a land area about the size of Iowa. It is an economically poor nation, and it suffers from high levels of corruption. In recent years, its democratic system has faced an array of challenges, including political violence, weak governance, poverty, demographic and environmental strains, and Islamist militancy. The United States has a long-standing and supportive relationship with Bangladesh, and it views Bangladesh as a moderate voice in the Islamic world. In relations with Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, the U.S. government, along with Members of Congress, has focused on a range of issues, especially those relating to economic development, humanitarian concerns, labor rights, human rights, good governance, and counterterrorism. The Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) dominate Bangladeshi politics. When in opposition, both parties have at times sought to regain control of the government through demonstrations, labor strikes, and transport blockades, as well as at the ballot box. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been in office since 2009, and her AL party was reelected in January 2014 with an overwhelming majority in parliament—in part because the BNP, led by Khaleda Zia, boycotted the vote. The BNP has called for new elections, and in recent years, it has organized a series of blockades and strikes.

    Fiqh al-Aqalliyyāt (Jurisprudence for Minorities) and the Problems of Contemporary Muslim Minorities of Britain from the Perspective of Islamic Jurisprudence This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth & Markfield Institute of Higher Education M.M.M. Rafeek 2012 Abstract This study seeks to explore some of the main problems contemporary British Muslims encounter from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence. In so doing, it mainly aims to shed light on the extent Muslims in Britain face problems and what impact they might have on their religious identity as well as relationship, belonging, and contribution to the wider society. In so doing, the study will strive to examine whether existing fiqh (Isalmic jurisprudence) literature is adequate to guide contemporary fiqh scholars to deal with such issues effectively and how some contemporary answers to such issues are inappropriate. If that is the case, what would be the way forward jurists should take to find appropriate solutions? Hence, this study will use qualitative methodology to investigate such issues and questions and it will lead the study to emphasise the necessity to find answers to such problems and a mechanism to handle them, which this study would seek to suggest as a jurisprudential approach called fiqh al-aqalliyyāt al-Muslimah (Islamic Jurisprudence for Muslim Minorities) based on values, principles, universalities, and higher objectives of Islamic law: maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah (Purposes of Islamic Sharī‘ah) presented by revisiting textual sources of Islamic law as well as lived examples of early generations of Islam.

    The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries.

    Appointment of a new WEA Secretary General Dear friend, The Search Process for the next Secretary General of the WEA has been underway now for some time. Through various communications you will be aware that we have been in the process of seeking to appoint a new WEA Secretary General to commence service in this role in the New Year. The search process began with the appointment of a Search Committee in March 2020. The call for applications and recommendations was widely distributed over the next few months and yielded over 16 responses from around the world, from within WEA structures as well as from those associated with the WEA. The Search Committee drew up a short list of candidates for which they took up references. A further short list was agreed and interviews for the position took place in October. On completion of the interviews, the Search Committee submitted their recommendation for appointment to the WEA International Council. The International Council met on 27th October and unanimously ratified and adopted the recommendation of the Search Committee. I am therefore pleased to inform you that Dr Thomas Schirrmacher has been appointed as the new WEA Secretary General, starting on March 1, 2021. Thomas will be known to many of you, as he has served in the WEA for many years. He has served in various roles since 1999, and is currently the WEA’s Associate Secretary General for Theological Concerns. Prior to this, Thomas was a member of the Commission for Religious Freedom, developed the International Institute for Religions Freedom, built up WEA’s office for Intrafaith and Interfaith Relations, is Chair of WEA’s Theological Commission, and WEA’s Ambassador for Human Rights.

They have appointed top-level theologians, human rights theorists, and religious freedom activists from both religions to a Humanitarian Islam/World Evan- gelical Alliance joint work- ing group to reshape the global discussions and in- teractions of religions in academia, public life, edu- cation, conflict resolution, and humanitarian needs. This comes in direct re- sponse to terrible levels of religious persecution and religiously motivated vio- lence seen in the twenty- first century.
