Botternell

Granite Hornfelsed Slate River alluvium 1140

Boturnell in the Manor of Carnedon Prior, was first recorded in 1140.

The origin of the name Botternell may come from one of these two suggestions: “Bod” = dwelling “Bot” = fire “Durnel” = personal name, possibly from the “Tur” = land Cornish ‘Dorn’ meaning ‘first’ as in first born “Nell” = hill

Reginald, Earl of , created the Manor of Carnedon Prior (now ) out of his great Manor of on the Lynher.

Around 1170 he gave it to the Austin canons of his new foundation of Launceston Priory. This was on condition that perpetual prayers and masses were said in the Priory for the souls of Reginald himself, King Henry his father, the Empress Matilda (his half-sister) and her son, the reigning king, Henry II.

The

The Austin canons of Launceston Priory were to enjoy this land ‘with all its meadows and pastures, its ways and paths, its waters and ponds, its mills, moors, turbaries* and turf grounds, its tin-mines and all other liberties whatsoever.’

This was how the Prior and canons of Launceston gained the over-lordship of Twelve Men’s Moor. In 1284 agreement was reached between them and twelve tenants of the moor who each paid an annual rent of four shillings.

* Turbary is the term used to describe the ancient right to cut turf, or peat, for fuel on a particular area of bog. Charles I Oliver Cromwell The English Civil War lasted from 1642 to 1651. Until the Royalists surrendered to the New Model army under Fairfax in March 1646 at , Cornwall was under Royalist control. In 1642 the King’s Army marched from Launceston to Bodmin up Port Lane from towards Kingbeare and onto the moor. The Parliamentarians assumed full power in 1651.

The Parliamentary Survey of the was undertaken in 1649 to 1650 to record and value all the lands in the Duchy that had been owned by the Crown. The occupiers of the land are shown as: Northbotturnell, North Hill  John Cotton, 40 acres, by Letters Patent on the lives of Thoms B, Thomas Reede jun of & John Cole jun of St Sampsons

The appointment of preacher Adam Clarke was an important local event. He was a young looking 21 year old but intelligent and popular; "his labours were abundantly owned of God; conversions were numerous and the Church was strengthened".

In 1785 when Adam Clarke was on his way from to Launceston, he met a farmer called John Nile, owner of Battens in North Hill. He allowed Clarke to preach at Botternell in Linkinhorne. The neighbours were called in, and as a result souls were saved and a Society formed.

Nile himself was not converted at that Service, but was so deeply affected, that he was unable to John Wesley sleep. He arose from his bed and walked over his farm during the night, and prayed to the Lord to forgive his sins.

Presently he approached the turnip field, and there he saw a figure stooping down on the ground. He watched a moment and then discovered it was a man stealing his turnips, and putting them in a sack. Mounting the hedge he cried; “Hallo there! what are ee about?" The man, aware that he was caught, cried out “Oh maaster! do ee forgive me; forgive me this once, maaster." "Forgive ee!" said Nile drawing near to the man, “Why that's what I want the Lord to do for me, I want the Lord to forgive me, and I must forgive thee." In that moment he obtained the blessing. He forgave his brother and his Heavenly Father also forgave him. Then said he, lifting up the sack on the man's head, "Take the turnips and go home with mun, but dont ee steal any more. If ee want any again come to me, and I'll give mun to ee.“

John Nile's property was always open to the Methodist Preachers, and henceforth [Lower] Botternell and Battens appeared as regular preaching places. Services were held once a fortnight on the Sunday afternoon, and the members met in Class on Sunday morning under the leadership of George Brimmell of Trelabe.
