Lanivet Parish Church Sunday services;

11 am Eucharist and Children’s Church (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Sunday in the month) 1st Sunday in month 11am family service ( all ages 6pm evensong (team service) How good it is to be back in church on Sundays. Like everyone else we have missed the good company of our friends, and craved being active together. Our pattern is nearly back to normal. We meet at 11am for communion services on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays, Morning Prayer on the 3rd Sunday, and at 6pm on the 1st Sunday for Evensong. The only service we have yet to return to is the informal Elevensies service at 11am on the 1st Sunday of the month.

Sadly we had to lay to rest one of our most faithful and supportive members, Ann Matthews. She had endured poor health for a good while and finally succumbed. Ann was a warm and encouraging presence amongst us. She was a sides person and very active with flowers and baking on all occasions. We were still under significant restrictions on numbers as the funeral took place in early May. Many gathered outside to pay their respects. We had our annual meeting on the 18th April and were pleased to appoint a new Parochial Church Council (PCC). You may recall we took a break from having a council for two years. Sometimes it is necessary to have a fallow period in which to recoup our energies. It is really encouraging to see that we have 8 committed members now ready to pick up this responsibility. They are: Andrew Harris, Helen Watson, Roger James, Val Moore, David Williams, Rachael Harris, Alistair Bennett and Lindy Margach. I have to pay tribute to Sara and Dave Bryon and Helen Watson. They have worked tirelessly with me throughout these past two years to oversee the life of the church and to patiently build our confidence and capacity. We shall continue to work closely together so that the worship and pastoral care of the church strengthens further.

The new PCC has a full agenda of church improvements to see to, not least to over- see the final stages of the installation of water, drainage and a kitchen. The good news on that front is that we have been able to secure grants of £13,000 from the National Lottery and Cornwall Community Foundation to add to what the Friends group has raised. We are waiting to hear about 3 other applications and trust that we shall soon make a start on the works.

We all remain committed to adding toilets to either the inside or the outside of church. The new PCC will examine the options carefully and come up with the most suitable proposal for widespread consultation. Other projects include repairs to the roof and the design of a new heating system. These are ambitious medium-term projects. In the meantime we continue our work to showcase the history and heritage of the church and hope you will notice some new features shortly.

Revd Paul Holley

Lanivet Parish Council

The last few days has seen a dramatic change in the political landscape in Cornwall. Need- Lanivet Inn less to say, the Parish Council will want to forge a new working relationship with our new- ly elected ward member Mrs Jenny Cruse. It would be remiss of me if I did not take a moment to thank the outgoing ward member Mr Chris Batters. Having served the community for some 8 years he had almost become “part of the furniture”. His knowledge of the Parish and its history was of great help. Also, the relationships he built within helped the Parish Council and residents alike leading to quick turnarounds especially in highways matters. He also chaired plan- ning committees and was able to advise us on controversial planning matters. He will be a hard act to follow and as we will miss him we also wish him all the best for the future. Take a look at our Take-away menu! By the time you read this I am hoping that the end of the restrictions will be in sight and we will all be able to meet again as we used to. Available You can place your orders over the phone on 01208 Parish Council Elections 831212 or online at Elections were not needed since no new prospective councillors stepped forward. We say thank you and farewell to Jane Dent and Clare Eddy for all their hard work over many https://lanivetinn.touchtakeaway.net/store years. This means that we are now in need of two new councillors. Please do contact the Parish Clerk if you think that you could help us manage the Parish and make it a better place for all. Lanivet Cemetery – the Old Church Cemetery Having now cleared the cemetery we have had to rope off part of the west side in order to deal with the Knotweed which has been there for many decades. Please be aware of this when visiting the cemetery. It will take some time to remove it completely.

Affordable Housing Project Whilst we are still patiently awaiting the submission of a planning application there is a lot of legal and related work going on behind the scenes. These projects are always com- plex with a number of parties involved. Recycling Centre – Old Coach Road

We had hoped to have held a meeting next week at the Centre with Cornwall Councillors and professionals to consider an alternative entrance to relieve the congestion on the Old Coach Road itself. However, the personnel changes mean we will now need to await Mrs Cruse’s help in this matter. Our phone lines are now open for Lanivet Green & Car Park orders You will now see that we have tidied up a number of trees including the oak in the car park. Also, one diseased tree near the green has been removed. The Parish Council has stopped using “Zoom” for its meetings. As from the 13 May we will http://www.lanivetinn.co.uk/ be using the Lanivet Community Centre again. Please continue to read the notice boards, Facebook and our webpage. 01208 831212 Rob and nat. Garden Jottings

Garden Jottings Well, since my last jotting the World has certainly moved on! We’ve just learnt that by mid-May we are on course for coming out of the Covid lockdown. Having had my second Covid jab I’m still not so sure I’m in a rush to venture to a pub along with everyone else just yet. I just cannot understand the rush to help facilitate yet another possible lockdown in the near future! There you go, sorry if you find the last statement an anathema. Well the weather has been a bit topsy-turvy these past two months. We have had the driest recorded rainfall for April for eons and yet the UK managed to have the most frosts for over 6o years!! I was continually out watering my pots as they just didn’t have sufficient water to survive without. Some of the smaller pots I plunged to ensure their water uptake was sufficient. My camellias felt the full brunt of early morning frosts unfortunately and yet in another section of the garden the Magnolia ‘stellata’ managed a fantastic display. Also another weather record for Cornwall was topped in April which meant recorded the hottest day in the entire UK with 20C Due to unforeseen problems within my garden, I have had to temporary remove two large, raised beds. So earlier in preparation this year I managed to transplant shrubs, bulbs and rockery plants to temporary accommodation. The hard work means I now have a blank canvas to restyle the garden. Exciting times, I will report back on the progress in later jottings. For those who were in a rush to plant out summer bedding at Easter may well be paying the price for the early frosts. Loads of my friends succumbed and have paid the price and are starting again. The supermarkets are full of good quality Mobile Computer Repairs bedding just ready to be transplanted. Remember if there is still a chance of frost just cover lightly with fleece which will stave off any morning frosts. Of course Trading 26 Years. given the rain we have now had in May the weeds are rampant. Try and keep on top of them and if in doubt try a general weedkiller to help the back!! As you are probably now well aware, I was not successful in being re-elected at the recent Cornwall Council Elections. Although increasing my vote by over 100 from the previous election, I ended up seven votes short of winning. Enough said on that!! It has been a privilege working as your Cornwall Councillor for the past eight years, and in return the village of Lanivet and its residents have given me overwhelming friendship and support in the three elections, that I have contested. As you well know, it was always my policy from the start in 2013 that I would make myself available for you to contact any time 24/7. I was fortunate in that having been living in the area for 43 years I knew a lot of the Lanivet residents. I feel that during those eight years, those of you that I did work for initially were my electorate, but very quickly many of you be- came my friends. I tried my best at all times to be truthful, honest with you, and be there for whatever concerns or issues you had, and I hope that I am able to say I managed that.

I would also like to publicly thank my wife Jill for the remarkable support given to me, over the years and who most of you have at some time spoken with in my absence. She loved her chats with you, and became quite an expert herself on many of the subjects reported!!!

Your Parish Council from the day I started has been excellent. It is very easy at Face 2 Face Financial Services times for criticism to be aimed at Councils, but in Lanivet the four Chair I served South West Ltd. with, and all of the Councillors I have worked with, are shining examples of how Coun- WTR House cils should work, and they should be congratulated for all the effort they have put in Road, Lanivet. towards helping Lanivet become the outstanding village it is. Bodmin Cornwall PL30 5HF It is most important that any Cornwall Councillor respects the people they represent and see all concerns and problems as being worthy of equal attention. I have tried my Tel. 01208832999 best and had quite a few achievements over the years within the village. You have a Website : www.f2ffs.co.uk wonderful community within the parish and I have worked closely with many of you. Here is the next instalment of meet the team

Our next team member is the person whose idea it was to do this, Jamie Andrew our Executive Chef.

Jamie has been with us since 2017 and oversees our kitchens at both Lanivet inn and Swan Hotel. Working with our head chefs to create our menus, keeping our kitchen standards to our 5 star rating, training team members, and helping to keep our business forward focused and continually evolving. Jamie Andrews grew up in St. East just outside of , he then moved to Bodmin when he was 10(Bodmin has never been the same since) he started working when he was 14, working a paper round and on a local pig farm for £1 per hour. (Yes before you ask they did have newspapers in those days) He then left school at 16 and went to lakeview on a YTS scheme where he trained to be a chef under Ken Williams. Jamie was at lakeview for 12 years where he worked his way up to head chef by the age of 24. During this time Jamie had decided he wanted to join the Royal Marines. He took all the tests and medicals etc, then went on the 3-day training program to see if he likes it and if they liked him. During his time here he broke the Royal marines sprint record. However, he decided it wasn't for him as the beds were too uncomfortable. I have been told his mum was so proud and had told everyone Jamie was going to be a Royal Marine so when she had the call to ick him up from the train station she wasn't best pleased! Jamie later got into golf and moved to lostwithiel Golf Club as head chef for a few years. He was then asked back by lakeview, which he did and stayed there for another 8 years. Jamie then heard about a STEPHEN GELLY ORGANIC MEAT new restaurant that was opening in Bodmin called Bosvena so he dropped his CV in to be told they had already had a lot of people recommending him, so was given the job. ( although I have a feeling he was the Organic chicken beef and lamb one calling them, using different voices but we will never know) produced to Soil Association standards During his time there they got Bosvena to 6th position in Cornwall on TripAdvisor within 18 months. Unfortunately, it didn't work out so Jamie then moved to Golf Club as head chef. He knew on our small family farm in Lanivet parish this was going to be a challenge as it was extremely busy with different functions daily, but he soon got into the role. After a year he felt with the hours he was not seeing enough of his son Jaxon and his fiancé FREE local delivery. Sarah was pregnant with their daughter . Luckily for us we were looking for a head chef at Lanivet and one of our locals sent Jamie a message for me, to see if he would be interested and we organised a Contact Martyn Collinge 07736158813 meeting. Jamie joined us in October 2017 and has been a huge asset it our team and businesses, I cant be too nice here or he will want another pay rise! stephengellyfarm.co.uk All joking aside we are very lucky to have Jamie, he has worked with the team and helped really bring Lanivet up a level. In our trade many chefs are know for their tempers but Jamie really breaks this mould and keeps calm when things are tough (most of the time) keeps his head down and gets the job done while keeping the team focused. This is a huge skill to have in a stressful environment and has proven on many occasions to make the difference between a shift going well or badly on many occasions. Jamie is know for his love of singing in the kitchen, so we apologise for the customer's that have sat near the kitchen and have heard this, but you will also feel our pain! On our last set of risk assessment's, we have decided for the safety of our team we will be investing in ear plugs for all team members in the future.

Some interesting facts about Jamie; Jamie has always enjoyed sports and started running for his school aged 9 and has run 4 marathon's; London, Paris twice and Prague along with many 1/2 marathons. Jamie used to play darts for Cornwall under 18s He also used to be a bit of a football star and has won lots of trophies in his time. Jamie still cannot parallel park and has been know to crash into bollards while attempting them. He apparently cannot stand wearing clothes and has to take his clothes off as soon as he gets home and in the door. Jamie was once nearly arrested in ASDA for wondering around in nothing but his boxes one evening! His fiancé Sarah has to always buy extra hairspray, as its something Jamie uses all the time. Although I think he need to get a refund on said hairspray.

The whole team love Jamie and we are lucky to have him as both a team member and as a friend. Jamie would do anything for anyone if they are in need and he is someone you can rely on and trust and we ap- preciate all the work he puts into his role.

One for All Lanivet Parish Community Centre Update

If everything goes to plan, the Community Centre will be fully oper- ational from the 21st June 2021. The last year has been very strange but we have survived and even taken the opportunity to: Refresh the paintwork inside and add more protection panels, Upgrade the sound system and add sound absorption panels, Install touch free taps and flushes. Whilst in lockdown the Community Centre was the focal point for the Covid 19 support for the Parish and surrounding area. In the year April 2020 to March 2021, 3700 shopping deliveries, 740 prescriptions and 140 hospital and medical trips were undertaken. Funding has been obtained to continue the free service until at least the end of September 2021. I am pleased to say that nearly all our previous activities are coming back and quite a few new ones especially for young children. Please keep an eye out on our website, facebook page and notices around the parish for the full list of regular activities that will be taking place. Other major achievements include: following John Austin’s extraordinary walk back in 2019 we have raised sufficient funds to purchase a 16-seater Community Minibus that we will come into service in July 2021. We have commenced building the Lanivet Community Café which we hope will be finished in the Autumn of this year.

We are really hopeful that all the restrictions will be finally lifted on the 21st June 2021 and look forward to seeing everyone back at the Community Centre.

Cornwall Councillor Jenny l Cruse

I am very honoured to have been selected as your Cornwall Councillor and I will do all I can to represent you and give good council. I would like to thank Chris Batters for his 8 years of commitment to the community. My post starts at midnight tonight, and already my inbox is full. The next two weeks will be induction and at the end of May the administration will be formed and a new era begins. I would like to reach out to you and let you know of some very easy ways to get things done. First of all if you have any problem with any incident ranging from potholes to fly tipping and other single incidents they can be reported to Cornwall Council here https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/ report-something/ you do need to sign in to your account to report the incident, but it is wide ranging and covers almost every possible scenar- io. Or you can call 03001234222 and your problem will be forwarded to the relevant department. This does work as I had a flood last November due to blocked drains and Cormac came out within 2 hours cleared the drain and then returned at 6pm to desludge. So please do use this ser- vice because you pay for it! Notwithstanding any problems with logging in a phone call will work just as well. As to chronic situations or more complex matters it is always a good idea to contact your Parish Council as well as myself as we will need to work together to solve the problem. I would be very pleased if you could follow me on https:// www.facebook.com/jennytostand where you can also contact me by message and follow current issues. my phone number is 07710219465 I very much look forward to meeting and helping many of you in the coming four years, and I thank you again for selecting me and for putting your confidence in me. I will do my very best.

Lanivet Methodist Church News

It's been an interesting time since I last wrote!!

On 18th April we went in to the chapel before our Sunday morning service, to find

that a small part of the ceiling (the old lathe and plaster) had fallen down! That morning we cleared up the debris, removed the chairs from the immediate area, and continued with the service as usual (for covid times!) A builder checked the ceiling and it seems purely age, "wear and tear", is the cause...which unfortunately means that the insurance will not cover the repairs needed. At this point we were just thankful that no one was hurt, and also that the proposed work on replacing windows had not been finalised, nor the process of seeking planning permission initiated... Due to the covid restrictions and social distancing needed, it meant that we were unable to use the school room for Sunday worship, nor continue to use just half of the chapel. The school room is currently still available to hire, although as and when work is done on the chapel ceiling, and the chairs etc need to be stored else- where, it would no longer be so. However as the church is very much the people rather than the building, we have found alternative venues within the village, for May and ongoing? We are in the old village hall for the first 3 Sundays, and then move to the new One for All Hall as of 23rd May, as it is then available... By the time the next newsletter is due, we should know more.... but join us at the hall at 11am ...... you would be very welcome.. We look forward to increasing freedom as the vaccination program continues to prove it's effectiveness.....Stay safe ...for yourself and others... Every blessing Margaret Swadling Church Steward 01208 83159
