Extract from Pigot’s Directory of Cornwall, 1830 (pages 135‐136) Bodmin and Wadebridge Bodmin is a borough, market town and parish, in the hundred of Trigg; 234 miles from London, 62 from Exeter, 60 from the Land’s End, 34 from Falmouth, and six from Lostwithiel. It is situated nearly in the centre of the county, between two hills, and consists chiefly of one long street, running east and west. This town must at one time have been of much more consequence, and greater magnitude, than at the present day; for it formerly contained a priory, cathedral, and thirteen churches or free chapels, of which the foundations and sites of some are still to be distinguished. The present church is the largest in the county, and is handsome within, but externally irregularly built. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of Lord de Dunstanville; and the Rev. J. Wallis is the present incumbent. Here are three chapels for dissenters, and a free grammar school, founded and endowed by Queen Elizabeth. Bodmin must have been very early constituted a borough; for in an ancient record it appears that the burgesses were fined 100 shillings, in the 26th year of Henry II, for setting up a guild without a warrant. The corporate body, as created by the last charter, granted in 1798, consists of a mayor, 12 aldermen, 24 capital burgesses and a recorder. The right of returning members to Parliament is vested in the corporation; the mayor is the returning officer; and the present representatives are, David Gilbert, Esq. and Horace Seymour Beecham Seymour, Esq. The summer assizes for the county, the Epiphany sessions, and the summer and October sessions, are held here; besides which, courts leet and baron are held at Easter and Michaelmas, annually. About half a mile north‐west of the town is a commodious county gaol, built in 1779, and situated advantageously for air and salubrity; and at the west end of the town is the county lunatic asylum, opened for the reception of patients on the 24th June, 1820. Races take place annually; the course, which is esteemed one of the best in the west of England, is about a mile hence. Bodmin is a place of but little trade, nor are there any mines of consequence worked in its vicinity. The river Camel, upon which are some corn‐mills, passes within a mile of the town. The neighbourhood of Bodmin is perhaps as pleasant as any in the county, and the land is tolerably productive, having the benefit of many small streams of water. The market‐day is Saturday; and the fairs are, 25th January, Saturday before Palm‐ Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Whit‐Sunday, and December 6, for cattle, horses and sheep. By the returns for 1821, the borough and parish contained 3,278 inhabitants. Wadebridge, a small market town, between four and five miles from Bodmin, is partly in the parish of Breock, and the lesser portion of it is in that of Egloshayle, and in the two hundreds of Pyder and Trigg. It is eligibly situated upon the Camel, which is the boundary of the parishes and hundreds; and the river is navigable for vessels of 150 tons burden. Its chief trade is in the exportation of corn; no manufacturers being established here, nor any mines worked in the immediate neighbourhood. The living of Breock is a rectory, and that of Egloshayle a vicarage: the incumbent of the former parish is the Rev. Wm. Molesworth, and the vicar of the latter the Rev. Richd. Cory. The Methodists, Calvanists and friends have each a meeting house here; and there is a small school supported by subscription. The market‐day is Friday; and there are three annual fairs, viz. The 12th May, 22nd June, and 10th October. By the parliamentary returns for 1821, the parish of St Breock contained 1,225 inhabitants, and Egloshayle 1,174; but the population confined to the town is not stated.
