The NSW Government continues to implement positive environmental planning changes to better balance environment and community needs with development goals.

The Illawarra Biodiversity Action Plan 2011and the South Coast Regional Conservation Plan identify key coastal parks, forests and hinterland and escarpment areas for protection.

Supporting the continued health of coastal landscapes including lakes and lagoons, coastal wetlands, estuaries and the protected waters of Jervis Bay.

Biodiversity certification ensures new developments will improve or maintain biodiversity values.

South Coast Sensitive Urban Lands Review Panel guides land use planning decisions for a number of sensitive urban lands sites by providing stronger planning controls around land in areas like Bendalong, Manyana and Sussex Inlet.

The National Parks and Wildlife Act ensures protection of places and items that are of significance to Aboriginal people.
