LIFE15 ENV/ES/000399 PROJECT OBJECTIVES

• Demonstrate to vine growers the benefits of the application of sustainable production techniques for optimizing the use of water, fertilizers and biocides / chemical pesticides.

• Demonstrate to winemakers the benefits of applying sustainable production techniques to optimize the use of resources.

• Contribute to increase consumer awareness of the environmental footprint of wine.

• Provide the right tools to growers and winemakers by applying new business models towards a sustainable wine production.

• Demonstrate the benefits of combining landscape conservation and reducing the impact of the global environmental footprint of wine to encourage sustainable tourism.

• Transfer of results and lessons learned to other European regions producing wine.

LIFE15 ENV/ES/000399 PROJECT SCOPE:

The main innovations of the scope of this project are:

• An integrated management of the entire value chain and production that involves an entire region with more than 170 wineries and 1,300 wine growers registered in the two Appellations of Origin. 20 wineries and 98 winegrowers expressed their interest in participating in the project by providing letters of support.

• The project has a larger geographic and sectoral dimension than other previous wine projects.

• Pilot test for the implementation of PEF Wine in the Priorat region.

• To promote sustainable wine tourism as a tool for transmitting the results of the project and sustainable winemaking practices in society

• Use the international recognition of the wines produced in the D.O.Ca. Priorat and the D.O. Montsant to facilitate the replicability of the results of the project in 6 other European wine regions.

LIFE15 ENV/ES/000399

The actions that will be carried out are the following ones:

• A1. Creation of groups of consultation of external experts and stakeholders committees

Efficient use of fertilizers in the vineyard • B4. Regional tailored best practices for water use, energy and materials optimization in wineries • B5. Environmental Footprint of the wine produced in the Priorat region (PEF WINE) • B6. Action plan for a sustainable wine tourism at the Priorat region • B7. Replicability and transferability of the results of the project

• C1. Monitoring • C2. Assessment of the socio-economic impact of the project actions • D1. Dissemination activities • D2. Technical dissemination • E1. Project management

Optimization of water management in the vineyard (B1)

• Objective:

 Optimize the use of available water resources for irrigation of vineyards using the appropriate dose and at the optimum time to obtain quality grapes.

• Contributions to participating wineries and wine growers:

 Recommendations according to needs (variety and soil types).  Irrigations according to needs of the plant (timing).

Optimization of water management in vineyard (B1). Action plan in 2017-2018

• How to get it?:

 Climatology (weather stations) and Soils profiles.

 Direct measures to the plants.

 Monitoring of water stress in the monitoring vineyards since veraison (last week of June according to area and year) to harvest (September). Measures of weekly water potential (Scholander pressure chamber).

 From veraison to harvest: maturation control, adjusting the water supplies.

 Contact with participating wineries and winemakers and issue periodic irrigation reports with water doses to be applied by variety.

 Microvinifications have been done at the end of the season (monitored plots).

Implementation of a network of weather stations in the Priorat region

 Set up monitoring 14 complete weather stations and zones.  11 new stations have been installed.

Optimization of water management for vineyard: Results in 2017-2018

 On average, 2017 water consumption of water monitored in vineyards was 63 mm/ha, while the water consumption of the plots where our recommendations were not followed in the region, is usually 80 mm/ha. It means more than 12% of water saved for getting the same results.

 Submission of 24 technical reports and more than 50 technical recommendations detailing the situation of water stress between 2017 and 2018.

 Scope: 81 plots; 15 wineries and 3 vine growers in approximately 100 hectares distributed throughout the Priorat region.

 In addition, this year, in one of the monitoring areas, humidity sensors have been installed at three depths in 3 different monitoring vineyards, which allows monitoring soil moisture throughout the campaign and the effect of irrigation made on it.

Efficient use of fertilizers in the vineyard (B3). 23 wineries DOM 7 vine growers DOM • Objective: 24 wineries DOCaP 4 vine growers DOCaP  Optimize the use of fertilizers in the right dose and at the optimum time.  Increase the content of organic matter.

• How to get it:

 Soil analyzes will be carried out for each plot.  Nutrient analysis of the leaves, for detection of deficiencies. foliar analyzes in flowering and in veraison.  Monitoring of total fertilizer consumption.

• Contributions to participating wineries and wine growers:

 Development of a specific fertilization plan (soil analysis).

 Provide the right amounts of fertilizers.

 Increase the organic matter of the soils.

 Eliminate micronutrient deficiencies (leaf analysis).

LIFE15 ENV/ES/000399 Efficient use of fertilizers in the vineyard (B3): work done in 2017 - 2018

 Nutritional diagnosis of the vineyard:  A total of 400 soil and leaves samples have been collected from November 2016 to July 2018, from 42 wineries and 28 vine growers of the 2 Appellations of Origin .

 During the period considered, fertilization control was carried out in a total of 267 vineyards in approximately 300 areas distributed by the Priorat region, which means a total of 254,997 hectares (120,646 hectares in D.O. Montsant and 134,351 hectares in D.O.Ca Priorat).

 From the analytical results of the samples, more than 100 technical reports with recommendations of fertilizer doses have been provided.

Saving close to 20% over the average of total fertilizers amount per year usually applied in the region.

Efficient use of pesticides in integrated pest and disease control programs for grapevine (B2): summary of results 2017 - 2018

Grapevine moth Test:

 Results mean save more than 500 application doses of synthetic insecticides in those

vineyards  Recommendations: only one insecticide treatment in 1.5 ha for the 2nd generation has been recommended (low pressure)

 varietal sensitivity, some incidence has been detected close to harvest, especially in the Carignan

 Growers have reduced phytosanitary products in 99% of total trial surface (817 ha).

Efficient use of pesticides in integrated pest and disease control programs for grapevine (B2): summary of results 2017 - 2018

Grapevine moth Test:

 D.O. Montsant have increased the Masroig spot with 70 hectares, going from 108 the last year

to 178 this one.

 D.O.Ca. Priorat there are about 660 hectares in sexual confusion (531 hectares in 2017), in struggle to the chemical alternative of the (total of 1,980 ha of vineyard area).

 2017 great results mean new spot-trials in Falset, (+20 hectares) and in -El Palell (+9 hectares).

LIFE15 ENV/ES/000399 CONCLUSIONS: KEY ASPECTS (DEVELOPMENT)

• The number of wineries and wine growers participating in the project have been tripled compared to the initially planned ones and new ones have joined the project.

• Good acceptance by wineries and wine growers in contributing to the development of a sustainable wine model applicable to other European regions.

• Greater impact on the results obtained.
