वृ दयाु धने ित | शातमछनादन | hdthappened to DdhDuryodhana? KiKris hna, des iiiring peace, vṛttaṁ duryodhanaṁ prati shāntim icchañ janārdanaḥ
परदेवा े महान अागत सवभूतानाम् Terrible cries f(from there (Duryodhana's camp), came to help everyone paridevo mahānatra āgataḥ sarva-bhūtānām
ताु े म े नाभनदनम् || अनकपाथु मयुत || can be heard. There is no joy for me. out of compassion ... śruto me nābhinandanam (61.5) anukampārtham acyutaḥ (61.21) तताऽहमे व सूत तता े दशासनयु वै ... O SjSanjaya, IidI said BtBut, DhDushasana' s tato 'ham abruvaṁ sūta tato duḥśāsanasyaiva
मद दयाु धने तदा | कणय च मत याे | tdllto my dull-witted son, DdhDuryodhana, and K'Karna'sadidvice al one mandaṁ duryodhanaṁ tadā karṇasya ca mataṁ dvayoḥ

ेयभाव े च कयाण न च म े तवाु ूढाे and when he dies, blessings but the fool did not listen to me. pretya-bhāve ca kalyāṇaṁ na ca me śrutavānmūḍho

मा शचा े भरतषभ || Do not grieve, O mighty one. māśuco bharatarṣabha (62.2)

तदैव भवता यद | पु सथाय सपथे | if you would h ave by putti ng your son on th e ri ght path tadaiva bhavatā yadi putraṁ saṁsthāpya sat-pathe
िनवितता यु सरधा वतथाे यद धमेण dissuaded them from war, to follow dharma, nivartitāḥ syuḥ saṁrabdhā vartethā yadi dharmeṇa
न वा यसनमाजते ् || न वा यसनमाजते ् || then misfortune would not have afflicted you. then misfortune would not have afflicted you. na tvāṁ vyasanam āvrajet (62.5) na tvāṁ vyasanam āvrajet (62.8)
व त ातमा े लाके े यपनयु ुकाले व BtBut you, the w isest tith in the world , NththbNow that war has begun, you tvaṁ tu prājñatamo loke yat punar yuddha-kāle tvaṁ
हवा धम सनातनम् | पागहु यसे नपृ | abdibandoning et ernal ldh dharma, blame your sons, O ki ng, hitvā dharmaṁ sanātanam putrān garhayase nṛpa
दयाु धनये कणय बधा याहरदाषाने ् the judgment of Duryodhana, Karna, pointing out their many mistakes. duryodhanasya karṇasya bahudhā vyāharan doṣān
शकु नेावगा मतम् || न तदापपते े || and Shakuni you accepted. Doing so now is not proper. śakuneś cānvagā matam (62.9) na tad adyopapadyate (62.17) धृतरा उवाच ताह कारवायै े King Dhr itarasth ra said, IthiI thin kthk the Kauravas are ithjin the jaws dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca grastān hi kauravānmanye
मृयुना तात सतान् | ofdf death thO, O SjSanjaya. mṛtyunā tāta saṅgatān
वमा े ह रण े तषाे In battle, their strength vikramo hi raṇeteṣāṁ
न तथा यतेऽ वै || is not so much seen today. na tathā dṛśyate 'dya vai (89.19)
समूढाऽे भशृ तात सय उवाच O SjSanjaya, I am compl et el y b ewild ered , SjSanjaya said, saṁmūḍho 'smi bhṛśaṁ tāta sañjaya uvāca
ुवा कृ णधनयाै | hithtKihhearing that Krishna and AjArjuna śrutvā kṛṣṇa-dhanañjayau
वा ै मामक सैय have penetrated my army praviṣṭau māmakaṁ sainyaṁ
सावतने सहायताु ै || with the help of Satyaki. sātvatena sahācyutau (89.38) अाापराधासूत तव िनगुणता ावा Due titkto your own mistakes, bibeing overcome OtflkfitOn account of your lack of virtue, ātmāparādhāt sambhūtaṁ tava nirguṇatāṁ jñātvā
यसन भरतषभ | पपात सतेष ु च | biftOkiby misfortune, O king, your bias t oward s your sons, vyasanaṁ bharata-rṣabha pakṣapātaṁ suteṣu ca
ाय ाकृ तवर ैधीभाव तथा धमे like an ordinary person, your ambivalence towards dharma, prāpya prākṛtavad vīra dvaidhī-bhāvaṁ tathā dharme
न व शाचते मह स || पाडवषे ु च मसरम् || you should not grieve. and your jealousy towards the Pandavas ... na tvaṁśocitum arhasi (90.1) pāṇḍaveṣu ca matsaram (90.2)
न ह त े सकृ त कद् ... you did nothi ng good na hi te sukṛtaṁ kiñcid
अादा ै मये च भारत | bfbefore or d uri ng th e war, O Oki king. ādau madhye ca bhārata
यते पतृ ैव The result seen from all this - dṛśyate pṛṣṭhataś caiva
वूला े ह पराजय || defeat - is entirely your doing. tvan-mūlo hi parājayaḥ (90.4)
