Hymn to Brahma ancient Sanskrit temple chant arranged for choir by David Nelson Miller Program notes Three traditional melodies from India are brought together in this choir arrangement, sometimes without accompaniment, sometimes accompanied by keyboard, and sometimes accompanied by the recorded sounds of tanpuras. A tanpura is a traditional Indian string instrument which typically drones on 3 notes. One possible translation of the Sanskrit text is below. The text beginning “Brahmanandam…” is sung to two different melodies, at the beginning and end of the arrangement. The central section is a setting of the traditional chant Twameva Mata, sung in Sanskrit and English. Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru Deva Maheshwara, Guru is the Maheshwara (Shiva), Guru sakshyat, parabrahma, Truly Guru is the supreme spirit – Tasmai Sri Guruve namaha. Salutations therefore to the Guru. Venkateswaran 1 Devi: An Exploration of Hindu Goddess Iconography Evyn Venkateswaran ‘Devi’ is a collection of illustrations that emphasize the unifying feminine power in Hinduism, commonly known as shakti. Portrayed within are several deities that have unique stories and corporeal forms, re-contextualized through a modern lens. The ways in which I have achieved this is through my depiction of each of the goddesses, featuring a separate culture or ethnicity found within the Indian Subcontinent. This challenges the current market of Hindu illustrations where all goddesses share the same facial-features, skin-tone, and clothing. In addition, each of the artworks contain compositions that are unique and break away from the typical forward-facing, subject gazing directly at the audience compositions found in the aforementioned illustrations. Lastly, when creating my illustrations, I strove to capture a story or a meaning that would distinguish the identity of that specific deity. Initially, the technique in which I completed this project was through using either oil pastels or nupastels, later adding a layer of digital paint with Photoshop. However, due to different situational changes, I have finished my last images utilizing Procreate on my iPad Pro. With both situations, I focused on impressionistic mark-making, using several colors to create an iridescent quality in each of the pieces. Within my color palettes, I used golden-yellow in each of the pieces to draw significance between the goddesses, for example using the most amount of gold in Durga to emphasize how she’s the ultimate form of shakti. My intent of displaying these images is through posters that can either be used as iconography within worship or hung up as decoration. -

The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. Philosophy of Mind: An Advaita Vedanta Perspective SURYA KANT A MAHARANA Philosophy of mind and the philosophical issues arising in the allied domain of cognitive sciences constitute a fast developing territory in the world of philosophical enquiry. The origin of the philosophy of mind can be traced back to the Greek period. Anaxagoras (of Athens; perhaps in 500-428 BC) taught tha t all things come from the mixing of innumerable tiny particles of all kinds of substance, shaped by a separate, immaterial, creating principle, Nous ('Mind'). Nous is not explicitly called divine, but has the qualities of a creating god; Nous does not create matter, but rather creates the forms that matter assumes. However, in the Western philosophical tradition, one can hardly find a cleavage between mind a nd consciousness. On the contrary, it is quite fascinating to discover th at there is a hard and fast cleavage be tween miJU! and consciousness in the classical Indian philosophical tradition, especiall y in the tradition of Advaita Vedanta. In this direction, the paper is an attempt to discover the unique structure of mind and to distinguish it from consciousness in the light of the champion of Advaita Vedanta, Adi Salikaracarya. To begin wi th, in the Western tradition, the terms 'mind', 'self' and 'consciousness' are often used synonymously. The renowned philosopher, Rene Descartes, makes a sharp and radical division between mind and body. 1 The two are regarded as separate and independent substances and it is thought that the interaction between ~hem is i.mpossible c x~ept t~rough some inexplicable or mysterious mterv~nll on or connectiOn.' “Re-Rigging” the Vedas: Examining the Effects of Changing Education and Purity Standards and Political Influence on the Contemporary Hindu Priesthood Christine Shanaberger Religious Studies RST 490 David McMahan, advisor Submitted: May 4, 2006 Graduated: May 13, 2006 1 Introduction In the academic study of religion, we are often given impressions about a tradition that are textually accurate, but do not directly correspond with its practice amongst its devotees. Hinduism is one such tradition where scholarly work has been predominately textual and quite removed from practices “on the ground.” While most scholars recognize that many indigenous Hindu practices do not conform to the Brahmanical standards described in ancient Hindu texts, there has only recently been a movement to study the “popular,” non-Brahmanical traditions, let alone to look at the Brahmanical practice and its variance with ancient conventions. I have personally experienced this inconsistency between textual and popular Hinduism. After spending a semester in India, I quickly realized that my background in the study of Hinduism was, indeed, merely a background. I found myself re-learning aspects of the tradition and theology that I thought I had already understood and redefining the meaning of many practices as I learned of their practical application. Most importantly, I discovered that Hindu practices and beliefs are so diverse that I could never anticipate who would believe or practice in what way. I met many “modernized” Indians who both ignored and retained many orthodox elements of their traditions, priests who were unaware of even the most basic elements of Hindu mythology, and devotees who had no qualms engaging in both orthodox Brahmin and quite unorthodox non-Brahmin religious practices. -
