Historical Key Data
1585 - Foundation of the University by Archduke Karl II of Inner Austria, including a Philosophical and a Theological Faculty at the Jesuit College. 1778 - Foundation of the Faculty of Law. 1782 - Transformation into a Lycée. 1827 - Re-opening as Karl-Franzens-Universität by the Emperor Franz I. 1863 - Opening of the main building on today’s campus area; Foundation of the Faculty of Medicine. 2004 - During the university reform, the Faculty of Medicine becomes an autonomous university.
