The main objective of the workshop

The main purpose of the 3-day workshop was to provide tailored learning experience to share a good practice and have a discussion on selected topics relevant for research and grant support staff across Utrecht Network.

This annual workshop continues the series of previous 2 successful events hosted by Utrecht University in 2015 and the in 2016.

The workshop programme

The programme topics were selected upon the preferences of the attendees indicated through the online poll. The varied programme provided opportunity for all attendees to actively participate and have at least 1 presentation on the topic of their choice and preference.

The selection of topics and multiple contributions delivered well-received broad and informative learning experience. The high number of presentations showed the different views on given topics, nevertheless at times limited the time for in-depth discussions.

The detailed workshop programme can be found in Annex 1 and the presentations of all the speakers are available at following link:

The main outcomes of the workshop

The received feedback shows that the event proved beneficial and useful thanks to the engagement and contribution of the participants and information-rich programme. The evaluation summary is attached in Annex 2.

To take this further the workshop attendees discussed the next steps to establish Research Managers’ Task Force, volunteering to become Task Force members and putting together the ideas for the Task Force strategy.

Research Managers’ Task Force members

1. University of Hull (Pam Jackson) 2. Utrecht University (Daphne Lentjes, Marjan Rossen) 3. Masaryk university (Roman Badík, Eva Ptáčková) 4. Leipzig University (Gerhard Fuchs) 5. Comenius University in Bratislava (Zuzana Lisoňová) 6. (Angie Mifsud)

The focus of the Task Force strategy could be at this stage summarized as follows:

 Develop a network of research managers and administrators  Share best practice and development opportunities in research management  Promote research funding opportunities and consider opportunities to prepare joint projects amongst UN member institutions

The bases of the strategy has been drafted and will be discussed at the Task Force meeting planned for September/ October 2017. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed.

The University of Malta volunteered to host the next Research Managers workshop in 2018. The exact dates have been already confirmed for 8th to 10th May.

Rating scale: 1 = not at all/ very poor vs. 5 = very much/excellent Overall score: 4.4 1. Did the workshop meet your expectations? 4,8 2. Did the workshop address relevant issues for your work? 4,5 4. Did the workshop offer the right opportunity for individual input? 4,4 5. Was the time for presentation and discussions well balanced? 3,5 9. How would you rate the organization of the workshop? 4,9 10. What is your overall impression of the workshop? 4,7

3) What were the main learning outcomes for you from the workshop?

 Interaction with other organisations and understand how other organisations encourage and support H2020 applications.  Great initiatives to implement at home, such as the MSCA masterclasses and having an internal support system for ERC grant proposers. Urge the authorities to allocate national funding for proposals evaluated above threshold but not funded. The importance to start considering Open Data.  Other Universities have similar “challenges” like success rate within H2020  Strengthening network Knowledge of different working conditions for colleagues in other countries, especially the Eastern European countries  Interesting presentations on research impact and social media in research. Also interesting was sharing the different experiences with coordinating collaborative EU projects and screening procedures for potential coordinators at different universities.  It was my first research managers´ workshop, so it was new experience and a lot new information. Most important thing for me was to be able to compare my opportunities and capability compare to others. I think that there´s no perfect system how to manage projects and researchers. And everybody would be able to get at least 1 idea to take back with them. I got several ideas and try to carry out 2 of them.  I gave my first presentation at a workshop, so that was my main learning experience. It was also good to meet and discuss issues with my counterparts in other European institutions.  Of course, that all research managers face similar issues. And the Ljubljana model for ERC support was particularly inspiring.  Especially the session about the EU agenda was interesting to me, but I also enjoyed learning about the UN taskforce and especially liked the networking opportunities the workshop offered me.  The main learning outcomes would be getting to know about different set-ups for long term development in organizations internally, for instance, ERC workshops and career tracking, managers workshops, mockup interviews and similar internal programs and activities.  Sharing of experiences of research support managers
