During the time of preparation, we asked each higher education institution in Slovakia to give us not only a list of study programmes offered in English, or any other language, but also a short description of the programme and information about tuition fees for third country nationals, if applicable. Therefore, if there is some insufficient information about any programme, or if you need any further information, we recommend you to contact the respective institution directly (for each programme there should be a person responsible, but also you can find at each institution profile a web page, where contacts can be found). Since the objective of this publication is to help foreigners to find a suitable study programme in Slovakia, we have summarised for you also an overview of higher education system in Slovakia together with the general information about application procedures and validation of the documents from abroad needed for the study application. Should you need any other type of information, e.g. information about visa, residence permit, working while studying, general information about the life in Slovakia, we recommend you to have a look at our website www.saia.sk/en, where you can find the „International Student’s Guide to Slovakia” and also other links to useful websites. 4 Study in Slovakia Higher education system in Slovakia Higher education institutions Higher education institutions (HEIs) are third‑level education, scientific and art institutions. The major task of HEIs is to provide higher education and creative scientific research or creative artistic activity. Higher education institutions are classified by the nature and scope of their activities into university type of HEIs and non‑university type of HEIs. a) The university type of higher education institutions provides education in the study programmes of all three levels of higher education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral) with a significant portion of study programmes of the second level and study programmes of the third level. The study programmes are carried out in connection with activities of higher education institutions in the field of science, technology or art, and in compliance with the current state and development of such fields. The term “university” may only be used in the name of a university type of higher education institution. b) The non‑university type of higher education institutions provides higher education mostly in the study programmes of the first level. Based on founding and funding there are 3 types of HEIs: . public higher education institutions – public institutions of higher education are established by law. They are financed mostly by the government. They are statutory and self‑governing institutions. At present, there are 20 public institutions of higher education, comprising 9 more or less traditional universities, 5 universities of technology, 3 higher education institutions of art and music, 1 university of economics, 1 university of veterinary medicine and 1 agricultural university. state higher education institutions – state institutions of higher education (3 HEIs) are military, police and medical schools. They are established by law and governed by the state through the corresponding ministries of the government. The state HEIs are fully financed from the state budget. private higher education institutions – private institutions of higher education (11 HEIs) need a state approval issued by the Government of the Slovak Republic. They are established and financed by non‑governmental institutions or founders. Most of the private higher education institutions provide education in the fields of economics, business, management, public administration, law, international relations, regional development, medical and social work. He completed his postgraduate studies at the same institution in 2002. He became professor at the Faculty of Education of the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica in 2019. He has been working as a university teacher since the founding of the Department of Theology and Catechetics in 1993. He focuses his research and publications on apologetics, phi- losophy for theologians, and Old Testament theology. MATEJ BEL UNIVERSITY IN BANSKA BYSTRICA Matej Bel University was established on the 1st of July 1992 by merging the College of Economic Services and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Pedagogical Faculty in Banská Bystrica. Banská Bystrica has a long tradition of education and culture. As early as the 13th century there was a parish school and later a town school. In the 17th century a Jesuit grammar school was founded and it was soon followed by an Evangelical grammar school established in the same century. It was the latter where Matej Bel, who gave his name to the University, studied and later taught and held the position of the Rector. Matej Bel (1684 – 1749) was the author of a large number of works about science, education, national history and geography, philosophy and religion. His ideas about the equal rights of nations, religious tolerance, of the integration of people and nations, of love of one´s native country and his belief in the power of education and culture are still relevant. His works have contributed to the development of science, school systems, education and culture in Slovakia and Europe. In the middle part of the 19th century, the Catholic grammar school, using Slovak as the language of instruction, became an important centre of education in Slovakia. In the academic year 1856-57, a Teachers´ training college was founded in Banská Bystrica, where thanks to the then current Bishop Štefan Moyses, courses were provided not only in German and Latin, but also in Slovak.
