In Czech the Jewish Quarter in Prague is called Josefov, named after the emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) whose reforms made life for Jews much easier and more comfortable. The Jewish Quarter reached its peak in the 16th century when Jordecai Maisel, the Jewish Mayor and very rich man, became the Minister of Finance. It was mainly his money that helped to develop a great deal of the ghetto.

Day 8 ROVINJ / PULA / FJORD / POREC / MOTOVUN / ROVINJ Breakfast at your hotel. Full day excursion “Circle of ” is planned for today. We will visit some of the most interesting places and towns in this rich Croatian province nicknamed Croatia’s “Tuscany”. During the Roman times, this was one of the Empire’s breadbaskets. Romans used to call it “Istria Nobilissima” (Bountiful Istria). Let’s step back into history from Rovinj. This part of Croatia, and for that matter, the entire Dalmatian coast as the eastern part of the Adriatic is called, was a part of the mighty Roman Empire. There is an obvious Venetian influence in architecture and in the layout of little towns. All streets are shiny cobblestone and easy to walk with proper shoes and there are some stone steps to climb. Therefore, please bring comfortable walking shoes. And yes, you must bring your camera, for you will want to take pictures of every street, every corner, every building, every window, every line spanning between buildings “decorated” with laundry drying in the warm Mediterranean sun. Rovinj-Pula (20 mi/33 km – about 25 min. driving time) Pula is the largest city here and also the site of the best preserved Roman amphitheater in the world. Romans, during their ruling in the Mediterranean area built about 35 amphitheaters. Except for 5 or 6, they were all completely destroyed. The Pula Coliseum is the best preserved and with only a few missing stones from its massive walls, the entire structure is intact. It is still today being used for civic events, including the annual Croatian summer film festival. Pula-Lim Fjord (24 mi/38 km – about 20 min. driving time) Lim Fjord is an approximately 7.5 mile-long narrow body of water that looks more like a river. Clear blue Adriatic water and an abundance of marine micro life have created excellent conditions for shellfish

Gil Tours Travel, Inc. 1511 Walnut St. 2nd fl, Philadelphia PA, 19102 www.giltravel.com t: 215-568-6655 t: 1-800-223-6655 f: 215-568-0696 www.facebook.com/giltravel 4 of 11 Jewish Heritage Tour in Croatia and Bohemia 2015-2016 Tour Highlights: Prague, Terezin, Zagreb, Opatija, Rovinj, Pula, Porec, Motovun, Plitvice, Split, Dubrovnik 15 Days | 14 Nights farming. A huge shellfish farm has been developed here, and about half a dozen restaurants serving nothing but fresh seafood have sprouted up in last 20 years. We will stop at one of those restaurants (name TBA) and try fresh oysters on half shell or steamed mixed shells in a robust garlic and wine sauce. Lim Fjord-Porec (19 mi/31 km – about 20 min. driving time) Porec (pronounced: po-rech) is a small town also built during the Venetian times and is home to one of Croatia’s 7 UNESCO World Heritage monuments: Euphrasian Basilica. This is the most western Byzantine church built in 14th century. Porec-Motovun (18 mi/28 km – about 30 min driving time) Nicknamed “Croatian Tuscany”, Motovun has many small towns perched on top of little hills surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Central town of Motovun is the crown of them all; in 1999, a young man by name of Giancarlo Zigante discovered the largest white truffle ever found anywhere in the world. He instantly became a rich man and today he is multi-millionaire with several stores selling truffle products, olive oils and wines, owns one of the best restaurants specializing in truffle dishes. Visitors who came for truffles also discover some of the best wines, olive oils and prosciutto. Dinner will at Zigante restaurants specializing in truffle dishes with sampling of different exquisite Istrian wine. After dinner return to Rovinj for overnight. Overnight: Rovinj (B, L)

Day 9 ROVINJ / PLITVICE LAKES / / SPLIT Breakfast at hotel Depart to Split with stops in Plitvice lakes, Zadar, Sibenik & Trogir. (Lunch on the way-TBA). Plitvice Lakes (pronounced: plee-tvee-tzeh) is truly a unique gift from Mother Nature. This beautiful national park is made up of a chain of 16 pristine lakes, set above each other and connected by spectacular waterfalls and cascades. They are all nested in a jungle-like, a rain-forest environment, thick, almost impassable forest abundant with flora and fauna. A highly popular site, one of the most acclaimed national parks in Europe, is a natural wonder, registered and protected with UNESCO World Heritage Monuments. As there is no vehicular traffic allowed in the park’s limits, be prepared to walk. Zadar is an ancient city, built in the center of the Croatian Adriatic, full of historical and cultural monuments. One well worth visiting site is Zadar's Sea Organ, a musical instrument powered by surf and waves of the Adriatic. It is the first musical pipe organ powered by the sea in the entire world. Many tourists come to listen to this mesmerizing symphony and enjoy sunsets falling on the nearby islands, a sensory experience that engages the ear and the eye for an unforgettable experience. Sibenik is one of the oldest Croatian cities and is known for its St. James Basilica (on UNESCO list of world heritage monuments). This cathedral is a triple-nave basilica with three apses and unusually high dome (32m/105ft high inside) and is also one of the most important Renaissance architectural monuments throughout the eastern Adriatic. Trogir (pronounced: tro-gheer) is an ancient Mediterranean town just north of Split. Because of its historical and cultural significance, a.k.a. “town museum”, has been proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage

Monuments. The small island of Trogir offers a concentration of palaces, churches, towers and a fortress which in every way deserves its nickname: "The Stone Beauty”. Split is the economic, political and cultural center of Dalmatia, the Croatian province embracing the shores of the Adriatic. It is best known for its architectural treasure of Diocletian’s Palace. This palace stands today, flanked by all the most important historical buildings, in the center of the city of Split. As the world's most complete remains of a Roman palace, it holds an outstanding place in Mediterranean and European culture and is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Overnight: Split (B, L)

Day 10 SPLIT After breakfast, sightseeing of Diocletian’s Palace, Jewish cemetery and stop at Mestrovich Gallery. Spend the rest of the day in Split at leisure Overnight: Split (B, L)

Day 11 SPLIT-MOSTAR-STON-DUBROVNIK After breakfast at hotel, we will depart for Dubrovnik with stops in Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina) and Ston, a charming seaside picturesque Mediterranean town, a gateway to Peljesac (pron. peh-lye-shatz) peninsula. Split-Mostar (102mi/164km – about 2.5 h. driving time) Mostar was built by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century and was considered to be the most western Turkish settlement. The old, one-arch stone bridge, a UNESCO protected site, over the river Neretva (after which the city got its name) was figuratively considered to be the bridge between the East and the West. We will visit a Jewish Community Center with synagogue, Jewish cemetery with memorial and have a lunch in typical Bosnian restaurant. We will stop in Ston briefly before arriving in Dubrovnik. Ston today is a sleepy little fishing town and the bay in front of it is the largest shellfish farm in the Adriatic. Miles and miles of floating shellfish lines set in perfect rows stretch as far as eye can see. Ston-Dubrovnik (34 mi/55 km – about 1.0 h. driving time) Arrival in Dubrovnik late afternoon. Overnight: Dubrovnik (B, D)

Day 12 DUBROVNIK Breakfast at hotel in Dubrovnik After breakfast, proceed to a 2 hour walking tour of Old Town Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is arguably the most fascinating city in the region, one of the top destinations in Croatia, and a line item on countless bucket lists. It is a magnet for Adriatic cruises, a “must” port of call of all major cruise lines and it is not unusual during peak season to see 5 or 6 ocean

The sight of these magnificent vessels against the stunning backdrop of Dubrovnik and the sparkling azure sea is the stuff of millions of postcards. Dubrovnik is a pedestrian zone, and its heart is full of attractions, perfect for leisurely exploration: city squares, old buildings, churches, museums, galleries, boutiques, cafés and romantic spots to charm you. All major attractions of this fascinating city including the oldest pharmacy and second oldest synagogue in Europe. The entire Old City has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserved with almost all of its original buildings. Its city wall, 4.5 m/15 ft. thick and over 7.6 m/25 ft. tall, is topped by a 2 km/1.25 mi foot path – enjoy unforgettable views as you walk above the city’s red and orange-tiled roofs, narrow streets climbing the hills, and laundry flapping in the breeze. Another “must” is a cable-car ride up to the top of Dubrovnik hill for breathtaking views over the city below, the crayon-colored boats in the harbor, the nearby islands and the entire Riviera. Dinner will be at a cozy restaurant in Dubrovnik (venue TBA) Overnight: Dubrovnik (B, D)

Day 13 DUBROVNIK / MONTENEGRO / DUBROVNIK Breakfast at hotel in Dubrovnik.

After breakfast at hotel in Dubrovnik, proceed to a full day excursion to exciting Montenegrin Riviera with private car and local private guide.

This excursion will take you to Bay of Kotor and all little Mediterranean towns nested in this unique fjord, the largest in the southern hemisphere. You will see medieval town of Kotor with its fortified walls, little islands of Our Lady of the Rock, Herceg Novi, Tivat, Porto Montenegro, a marina for the most expensive private yachts, Budva and Sveti Stefan where the most unique hotel in Europe is located, the Aman Resort. We will try and arrange a lunch in this elegant resort (not included in tour price). Dubrovnik-Herceg Novi (32 mi/51 km – about 1.0 h driving time) The little town of Herceg Novi is perched on the high cliff at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen. Its history of foreign occupations resulted in diverse architectural styles; it is noted for its numerous flights of stairs, its spas, health centers, lush colorful gardens, and its sunny weather. Herceg Novi-Perast (20 mi/32 km – about 20 min. driving time) Perast is a sleepy baroque place near Kotor. Most of the beautiful buildings of this small city were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. At that time, seafaring was growing and the ship captains who lived here built magnificent villas that even today will capture you with their architectural beauty and its abundance of sacred monuments, such as the Church of Saint Nicola (Sveti Nikola) built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Perast-Kotor (8 mi/12 km – about 10 min driving time) The oldest town in Montenegro, Kotor, is now a state-protected historical monument. In 1979, a major earthquake seriously damaged the town, but much of it has been restored. In 1979 Kotor was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Gil Tours Travel, Inc. 1511 Walnut St. 2nd fl, Philadelphia PA, 19102 www.giltravel.com t: 215-568-6655 t: 1-800-223-6655 f: 215-568-0696 www.facebook.com/giltravel 7 of 11 Jewish Heritage Tour in Croatia and Bohemia 2015-2016 Tour Highlights: Prague, Terezin, Zagreb, Opatija, Rovinj, Pula, Porec, Motovun, Plitvice, Split, Dubrovnik 15 Days | 14 Nights

Kotor-Porto Montenegro (7 mi/11 km – about 10 min. driving time) Porto Montenegro is a completely new resort town, the brainchild of Canadian billionaire Peter Munk, who built a marina for luxury yachts, luxury hotels a condo complex to attract wealthy jet-setters. Proceed to Tivat, which is nestled in the heart of Kotor Bay, boasting a dramatic coastline and many splendid beaches, coves, harbors, which are still largely undiscovered. The rich archaeological findings and cultural and historic heritage testify to its early beginnings. Diverse cultural programs, popular festivities and sport events have become synonymous with the town. Tivat-Cetinje (via Mt. Lovcen 26 mi/42 km – about 1.0 hour driving time) Mt. Lovcen stems almost vertically from the blue waters of Bay of Kotor to 5,740 ft/1,750 m. On top of mountain there is a mausoleum and a monument to Montenegrin hero; statesman, philosopher and poet. There are 461 steps to climb that lead from parking lot to mausoleum and this imposing monument. View from the mountain on the entire Montenegrin Riviera is spectacular.

As the capital of Montenegro, Cetinje (pronounced tze-tee-nyeh), houses numerous embassies, which have been repurposed to house museums and the Art Academy, which are a must-see! Enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over this delightful small city of parks and rich greenery at Orlov Krs (Eagle Rocks). Cetinje Sv. Stefan (23 mi/37 km – about 45 min driving time) Looking at Sveti Stefan today, one would not necessarily know of its origin as a typical small Mediterranean fishing village. However, when the Aman Resort stepped in during 2010, it transformed the tranquil village into a modern island resort. The surrounding Mediterranean-style stone houses and cottages, narrow cobblestone streets, small town squares add to the charm and are also transformed into deluxe accommodations.

About 6 mi/10 km away is Budva, a typical Mediterranean town and the biggest tourist resort in Montenegro. Its beautiful sandy beaches, numerous first-rate hotels and restaurants make it a quick favorite of the locals, as well as foreign tourists.

Return to Dubrovnik in late afternoon or early evening.
