ISTRIA Timeout.Com/Croatia ISSUE ONE, 2019 ISSUE ONE, ISTRIA timeout.com/croatia Taste the region Istria Holidaywith a view Here in Istria, more so than almost any destination you could visit in the region, we live in harmony with nature. This ethos Istria: helps to showcase our region as a year-round destination. Life as it should be 'Life as it should be' is our motto. And whichever time of year you visit our beautiful peninsula, you will be able to take part in a traditional, healthy and sustainable way of life, one governed by seasons which provide a bounty of globally- recognised produce. Our crystal-clear Adriatic offers up the most exquisite, fresh seafood, providing much of the Mediterranean-style diet we consume. From our continental side, the spectacular hilltop towns of Istria and the terraces of vineyards and olive groves give us award-winning wines and olive oils. Famous too are our rich black and white truffles and fine cheeses, both of which stem from the same beloved terrain and terroir as our wines and olives. Beat the crowds by visiting in springtime, walking down romantic, cobbled streets unfettered by fellow tourists, or arrive in the summertime so the family can take advantage of our beautiful beaches, clean sea and dependable sun- shine. Autumn shows Istria at its best; the weather is good and the sea is still warm enough to swim in, it coincides with harvest time, the arrival of the year's new truffles and the start of the hunting season. Each season Istria has its own cultural calendar, from famous film and music festivals to time-honoured food celebrations. Our major international airport in Pula adds new routes year upon year. Over 70 European destinations including London, Paris and Frankfurt are connected by direct flights to Pula, positioning Istria as an attractive and easy getaway for visitors from all over the world. It's never been easier to visit Istria. At whatever time you arrive, you won't fail to fall in love with 'Life as it should be'. • Re/Defining the Imaginary Museum of National Music
Re/Defining the Imaginary Museum of National Music The Case of Croatia Zdravko Blažekovic´ The historian is a product of history himself, and of his situation. However hard we may try, he cannot escape the molding of his mind by his experience and his surroundings.1 Music historiography in Croatia was throughout the twentieth century marked by the path established in the late nineteenth century by Franjo Ksaver Kuhač (1834-1911), who defined the criteria for inclusion of musicians into the national canon on the basis of their Croatian ethnic origin rather than presenting cultural circles in which they were active. In the twentieth century, the central influence on the definition of the canon of Croatian music history came from Josip Andreis (1909-1982) in his historical survey published in three Croatian editions (Razvoj muzičke umjetnosti u Hrvatskoj [The development of musical arts in Croatia], 1962; Povijest hrvatske glazbe [History of Croatian music], 1974, 1989) and two English editions (Music in Croatia 1974, 1982). Synthesizing the existing views about Croatian music, he constructed in his narrative a museum of Croatian and foreign com- posers active in Croatia, as well as composers born in Croatia but living abroad. Besides nationalistic traits inherited from Kuhač, a reason for emphasizing activities of composers working abroad were the political and cultural circumstances surrounding Andreis during the time of communist Yugoslavia, when Croatian connections with the Central European musical space were particularly appreciated, especially when the quality of composers living abroad surpassed the musical production within the country. Being a part of multina- tional Yugoslavia situated between the Eastern and Western cultural and religious spheres, Croatians at the time wanted to distance themselves from the cultures in Eastern Europe and felt the need to be reassured about their belonging to Slavia Latina.

  • Making Sense of Memory
Copyright © Museum Tusculanums Press Making Sense of Memory Monuments and Landscape in Croatian Istria1 Jonas Frykman Frykman, Jonas 2003: Making Sense of Memory. Monuments and Landscape in Croatian Istria. – Ethnologia Europaea 33:2: 107–120. When the actual terror is over, how do you reconcile without trying to pay back? With the falling apart of Yugoslavia, past, suppressed injustices remerged and were frequently used to connect the present with bitter memories. In the ethnically diverse region of Istria, however, it has been difficult for any group to claim its interpretation of history to be superior to others. Seeking to explain the Istrian case and within it the role of the esuli, the article juxtaposes the material discourse represented by monuments with the workings of memory and the dynamics which jostle sleeping, hidden, or private memory into public discourse. It is argued that in Istria, the absence of an ethnic “master narrative,” and the coexistence of many different groups sharing the territory has been useful for keeping nightmarish memory of ethnic violence at bay. Instead, place has come to matter more than history. Within landscapes and monuments, experiences of terror and narratives of martyrdom find a resting place, however uneasy. Prof. Dr. Jonas Frykman, Dept. of Ethnology, University of Lund, Finngatan 8, SE-223 62 Lund. E-mail: [email protected] “Say a hawk came out of the blue and seized one Memory is not really what people recollect, of your chickens. What can you do? Časopis za povijest Zapadne Hrvatske, X./10., 2015. Časopis za povijest Zapadne Hrvatske, X./10., 2015. LEO WEICZEN VALIANI Fiuman, European, Revolutionary, Historian Prikazi i izvještaji / Reviews and notes Slaven BERTOŠA, Barban i mletački Loredani: život u pokretu, ljudi i događaji, Pazin – Barban – Pula: Katedra Čakavskog sabora Pazin – Općina Barban – Državni arhiv u Pazinu – Sveučilište Jurja Dobrile u Puli, 2015., 320 str. Dr. sc. Slaven Bertoša, cijenjeni stručnjak za novovijekovnu povijest Istre i sjevernojadranskog prostora te redoviti profesor u trajnom zvanju Sveučilišta Jurja Dobrile u Puli, napisao je prvu povijesnu znanstvenu monografiju o povijesti područja Barbana i Raklja koja je – kako kaže autor – sastavljena interdisciplinarnim, multidisciplinarnim i transdisciplinarnim pristupom. Svoju knjigu Slaven Bertoša je napisao multiperspektivno, analizirajući različite arhivske izvore, obilazeći terenskim istraživanjima prostor Barbana i Raklja, proučavajući hrvatsku, talijansku i slovensku historiografiju. U Uvodu (str. 7), Vicina pećina i pećina Jamurina (str. 8) te pećina na Ledini (str. 9). Kada je 1535. mletački Senat donio odluku da se Barban i Rakalj pretvore u privatni feud, na javnoj ih je dražbi kupila plemićka obitelj Loredan koja je njima upravljala sljedeća tri stoljeća. Iz novog vijeka potječe i znamenita Trka na prstenac koja se u povijesnim vrelima prvi put spominje 1696.

INTRODUCTION The competitiveness of Istrian rural areas as a tourism product is not satisfactory, as demonstrated by the stagnation of agritourism – the backbone of rural tourism – and the closing of farms, which has been occurring in recent years. The situation is even worse in some parts of Croatia. Increasing the competitiveness of rural tourism requires enhacing the recognizability of the rural destination. The best means to achieve this objective is "upgrading" agritourism – the basic product of rural tourism – with additional content. The above considerations lead to the following question: Which content is adequate for this type of tourism? This paper aims to show that cultural and entertainment events can contribute significantly to enhancing the basic product of rural tourism by conferring "added value" upon the destination. Cultural, entertainment, sports and other events can thus become an important factor in the sustainable development of tourism, especially in the valorisation of cultural heritage through tourism, thereby increasing the opportunities for its conservation, preservation and promotion, and addressing both tourists and the local population.

Salih Katircioglu∗ UDK 339.727.22:338.1(560) Original scientific paper Izvorni znanstveni rad FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TURKEY: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION BY THE BOUNDS TEST FOR CO-INTEGRATION AND CAUSALITY TESTS ABSTRACT This paper empirically investigates the level relationship and the direction of causality between net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth in Turkey by using the bounds test for co-integration and Granger causality tests. Results suggest that both variables are in long-run equilibrium relationship only when FDI is dependent variable under the ARDL (auto- regressive distributed lag) modeling approach. Final investigation in the paper is that economic expansion in Turkey stimulates expansion in net FDI inflows. JEL: C22; C51; F43. Key Words: FDI, Economic Growth, Bounds Test, Granger Causality, Turkey. 1. Introduction The theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between FDI and economic growth is quite extensive. FDI is often seen as an important catalyst for economic growth (Le and Suruga, 2005). Majority of empirical studies focuses on the effect of FDI on economic growth. Thus, the causal link from FDI to growth has been popular in the relevant literature. However, as also mentioned by Chakkaborty and Basu (2002), the causal link from economic growth to FDI and feedback relationship between FDI and economic growth deserves further attention. So, the direction of the relationship between FDI and economic growth needs to be further emphasized, because, FDI related spillover of knowledge promotes economic growth and economic growth in turn attracts more FDI (Chakkaborty and Basu, 2002). Empirical studies in the literature investigated the FDI – growth nexus such as Le and Suruga (2005), Durham (2004), Borensztein et al.
