The church, dedicated to St Simon and St Jude, is a large and commodious structure. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Elmsthorpe, annual value £280, with resi­ dence,in the gift of Earl Lovelace. The Rev. Ferdinand Einest Tower,M.A., is the vicar. Here is a Congregational chapel, Rev. John Stewart minister. The Baptists, W esleyans, and Primitive Methodists have also chapels. The lady of the manor is the Queen, as Duchess of Lancaster, but the rights thereof are reserved to the copyholders them­ selves. Hosiery is extensively manufacturered in this place, Mr John Miller Everard and Mr John Homer are the largest manufacturers of the above goods.
