26/09/2020 RE: Press Release-Official Launch Event for the SDSN Network - Kenya Τhe Leadership Council of the Kenya branch of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Kenya), was launched virtually on 24th September 2020 . The event was graced by the Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and leading economist Prof. Jeffrey Sachs and high-ranking academic and government officials- see photo below

SDSN Kenya is hosted by two institutions namely; Center for Public Sector Reforms (CPSR), and Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies, University of . SDSN Kenya was approved in March 2020 by the Networks Strategy Council of the SDSN. SDSN Kenya is an offshoot of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an initiative of the which aims to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise in support of sustainable development and the SDGs. The vision of SDSN Kenya is to realize the attainment of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Kenya with the rallying call being :Leaving no one behind” This agenda is applicable to all nations and stimulates action on six key transformation concepts; , gender and inequality; health, well-being and demography; energy de-carbonization and sustainable industry; sustainable food, land, water and oceans; sustainable cities and communities; and digital revolution for sustainable development. SDSN Kenya is guided by four guiding principles for SDG implementation, which include: 1. Leaving No One Behind: promote inclusivity and participation of all actors 2. Universality: the goals apply in every county and communities

SDSN-Kenya is hosted by Moi University & . 3. Integration: achievement of any one goal is linked to the achievement of the others. 4. Aspiration: there is a need to move past business as usual and seek transformational solutions.

Moi University has a record 4 leadership Council Members, who were appointed, based on their background, qualifications, expertise and experience. Their responsibilities include the development of SDSN Kenyasvision, increase its visibility, provide strategic guidance and ensure integration across themes, geographies and support the outreach strategy for our network to engage with communities (science, business, civil society, multilateral development banks, governments, etc.) in Kenya They include:

Dr. James Chelang’a – Co-Host Chair, SDSN Kenya. He holds a doctorate degree in Environmental Studies (Human Ecology), (Moi University). He is currently the Director of the Centre for Public Sector Reforms (CPSR), an organization that promotes Public Sector Management improvement models. His research interests include strengthening international collaboration on joint research, joint supervision of Masters Students, teaching of short courses such as Environmental Impact Assessment/ Environmental audit

Simeon K. Mining is Professor of immunology at Moi University, School of Medicine and Director of Research, Moi University. Member of the Board of Directors, Kenya National Innovation Agency, Chairman Board of Directors, St Lukes Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital, Eldoret, Kenya, Chairman BoM Kapsabet Boys High School, Team Leader Development of Research uptake Sub-Saharan Universities funded by Wellcome Trust through Association of Commonwealth Universities, Co-Chair, Basic Science working group AMPATH, President and member Kenya Society of Immunology, Coordinator Moi-Linkoping funded projects, School of Medicine, Moi University Student and Staff exchange Linnaeus Palme Project, He also serves as International Advisory Editor, Medical Journal of Pathology and member of the editorial board of East African Journal of Pathology. He previously served as member of IREC MTRH-Moi University and National Bioethics Committee from 2011 to 2018. He holds a PhD in Parasite Immunology from The University of Liverpool ,UK 1992, DVM, MSc from Moscow Vet Academy ,1985 and an Honorary Doctor of Medicine from Linköping University, Sweden , 2012. Has supervised over 20 students for Masters and PhD, widely published over 50 publications in internationally reputable scientific journals.

Damiannah M. Kieti is an Associate Professor at Moi University and tourism expert with over 17 years of experience. She has been involved in teaching, research and consultancy in tourism and related fields. She has carried out numerous projects in tourism product development, Community based tourism development, Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises Development, tourism management plans, tourism curricula development, tourism training and research, sustainable tourism development and pro-poor tourism development. She has supervised more than 8 PhD and 25 Masters’ candidates to completion. She is an author of more than 25 journal articles and seven book chapters and served as an external examiner for 11 Universities and 2 . She is the founding editor of African Journal of Tourism and Hospitality. She has held several management positions including Head of Department of Tourism and Tour Operations Management, Moi University and she is currently the Dean - School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management, Moi University. She has initiated and maintained Eight (8) Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Moi University and other external institutions. She was awarded Chancellor’s Excellence in Service Award in December, 2017 for Demonstrating Leadership and Enterprise in Managing the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management.

SDSN-Kenya is hosted by Moi University & University of Nairobi. Emily Chepngetich Sitienei (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Psychology, Moi University. She doubles up as a Director of Peace Warriors Organization- Kenya and hence represents the voice of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at the Leadership Council. She is a Gender Specialist, Policy Advocate and Social Change Philanthropy Practitioner. She has worked on issues of Gender and Girl Child Empowerment.

SDSN Kenya Secretariat Wesley Chirchir – Network Manager, and Program Manager, SDSN Kenya. Wesley has a wide range of qualification including Masters of Arts in Public Administration; Post Graduate Diploma, Development Administration; and Advanced Certificate in Development Administration. An experienced and dedicated person with over 20 years’ experience in the public and nonprofit sector in Kenya and the East Region. Wesley is the founder of the Center for Public Sector Reforms (CPSR) of Moi University, Kenya. Wesley possesses excellent skills in, resource mobilization, leadership, public sector management, strategic management, public relations, monitoring, and evaluation, training and capacity building.

Ms. Stella Mbiti – Assistant Network Manager, SDSN Kenya. She is PhD candidate in Landscape Architecture, University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where also serves as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture. She holds a Master of Environmental Planning and Management and currently pursuing a PhD in Landscape Architecture. Stella has a wide experience in mainstreaming socio-environmental aspects in donor funded projects (Word Bank and GoK). Stella is the Managing Director for Stellon Vision Limited as well as a program officer for the Poverty Eradication and Community Empowerment (PEACE) organization.

SDSN-Kenya is hosted by Moi University & University of Nairobi. Felix Kulei – Network Coordinator, SDSN-Youth Felix is the current youth coordinator for SDSN-Kenya and also the Network Coordinator for SDNS-Youth in charge of youth programs on the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya. He has wealthy of experience in youth and Women empowerment programs and he is a community development expert. He holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology and National Diplomas in Project Management, Social Work and Community Development with over 7 years in development work. He has previous research experience from Moi University and he has ability to handle large programs in the humanitarian sector.
