Press Release For immediate release | 12 March, 2021 Seven (07) RUFORUM Network Universities ranked among top 1000 Universities in QS World University Rankings 2021 Kampala 12 March 2021 The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) strives to support its member universities to deliver quality education through cutting edge research, innovation and academic mobility to enable them rank higher globally. With the controversies surrounding University rankings, they have remained relevant in demonstrating the value of institutions of Higher Learning According to the recently released QS Universities Rankings 2021, Seven (07) RUFORUM member Universities were ranked among the top 1000 Universities globally. In Africa, only six countries featured; South Africa (9), Egypt (9), Uganda (1), Ghana (1), Kenya (1) and Morocco (1) This year’s QS World University Rankings reveals the top 1,000 universities from around the world, covering 80 different locations. A total of 22 universities in African are featured, with the majority (nine) found in South Africa and same number in Egypt. The existing policies in many Governments in Africa focus on increasing access to University Education, and as such the pressure from university stakeholders and beneficiaries to demonstrate value for money invested in Higher Education has made universities to consistently strive to do their best and show their relevance. This year like the previous ones, universities in South Africa and Egypt continue to dominate in Africa. RUFORUM was established by Vice Chancellors in 2004 with a Secretariat hosted at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. In 2014 RUFORUM signed a MoU with the African Union Commission to support implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 2024) Priority One on reducing poverty and ensuring food and nutrition security. RUFORUM has supported the training of 1958 MSc and 536 PhD graduates, of whom 98% work in their countries or region, the generation of over 300 agricultural technologies and mobilized over US$214.9 million for strengthening postgraduate education in Africa.
