As every spring, the popular Daily Getaways of the U.S. Travel Association are back in 2019. Every day until 4 June you can acquire certain travel deal packages primarily from hotel chains. One of the highlights each year is the Hilton and Hyatt points sale. We will present great redemption options for these hotel chains in Budapest, on the Maldives and on Bora Bora, the destination on our Insider News cover.

Copa Airlines is our Airline of the Month. The Star Alliance member serves many destinations in Central America and the Caribbean from its hub in Panama City, together with selected longer routes to North and South America.

Lufthansa has very interesting partner tariffs on offer from Germany to North America in business and first class. You can travel to various destinations for EUR 3,250 per person in first class or from EUR 1,500 in business class. In Swiss first class, you can travel to Dubai or Oman for EUR 2,500. As every year, the US Travel Association has started the so called “Daily Getaways”. From Monday till Friday every week interesting travel deals are featured on the Daily Getaways website. We have put together an overview of the most interesting offers.

The offers are always released at 1 pm Eastern time, which is 7 pm in most of Europe or 6 pm in the United Kingdom. The number of deals on offer is strictly limited. So you have to be very fast. The most interesting deals are sold out within the first three seconds.

Now, let’s look specifically at the highlights, before dealing with the actual procedure for purchase. Of course individual prefe- rences will be different. However, with the following deals you can save up to 70% in top luxury hotels worldwide.

Friday, 24 May – Orbitz

While USD 650 for a USD 1,000 hotel voucher is very attractive per se, the catch is here that you can use these vouchers in almost all five-star boutique hotels worldwide. Many of the big hotel chains are excluded, but there are countless independent luxury hotels on all continents. And of course, you can book Orbitz hotel sales where you get “3 for 2” or “4 for 3” specials.

For example, you book a hotel that costs USD 500 per night. Normally, three nights would cost USD 1,500. However, the hotel has a “3 for 2” special and thus you pay only USD 1,000. If you use now the USD 1,000 Orbitz voucher which you purchased for USD 650, you finally pay for three nights just slightly more than you normally pay for one night. Of course, this was the best scenario. However even without any specials you can achieve attractive savings. The following example features the Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome, one of the best hotels in Berlin:

Here, you could pay almost the entire accommodation cost with the voucher. You would only have to pay taxes and fees.

The code for redemption is valid until 15 March 2020 for travel until the end of 2020. The minimum booking value is only USD 1,000. Thus, you can achieve a maximum 35% discount (applies to accommodation only, not for separately shown taxes and fees). Please note that the voucher is only valid for booking one room, not several rooms.

Monday, 3 June - Buy Hyatt points and redeem them for luxury hotels

Hyatt points are probably the most sought-after and quickest selling deal in the Daily Getaways. It is the cheapest way of getting World of Hyatt points, and demand is accordingly high. At the same time, very few packages are offered for sale.

As described above, there are four packages on offer. You pay slightly different prices per 1,000 Hyatt points purchased:

• 120 x USD 260 for 24,000 points (USD 10.83 per 1,000 points) • 54 x USD 330 for 30,000 points (USD 11.00 per 1,000 points) • 30 x USD 415 for 40,000 points (USD 10.38 per 1,000 points) • 25 x USD 775 for 72.000 points (USD 10.76 per 1,000 points)

Even in the most expensive case, you pay only USD 11 for each 1,000 World of Hyatt points, about EUR 9,80, which is extremely good value.

Now let’s look at the options for using the purchased points in an optimized way. For example, the new luxury hotel Parisi Udvar in Budapest, member of the Hyatt Unbound Collection, is available at only 8,000 points per night– even though the regular price on many dates is EUR 300 to 500. Let’s look at a weekend in August 2019. The regular price is EUR 400, the cheapest rate is the non-refundable advance purchase rate of EUR 340 for logged-in World of Hyatt members:

In addition you need to pay EUR 75 taxes per night:

This leaves us at EUR 415 per night - even at the cheapest rate.

With Hyatt points you would pay 16,000 points or 8,000 points per night. Alle taxes and fees are covered by that.

You get the required 8,000 points in the Daily Getaways for – depending on the package– only USD 83 to 88, that is, EUR 74 to 78. An unbelievably cheap rate for a hotel which normally costs five times that. The saving is over 80%.

However, there are also attractive deals at the other end of the points spectrum: one of the most popular hotels for redeeming Hyatt points is the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa. When you book with points you stay in a 165 m² park villa with its own access to the beach and a large private area. You can book the villa for 30,000 points per night only with mostly good availability.

The following example is from January 2020:

If you book the villa regularly you will pay EUR 758 and if you need a flexible rate you need to add another EUR 50 to 150 per night .

Thus, you can easily save up to 65% An outstanding option for redeeming points. The entire resort is never too crowded since there are only 50 villas. You can see some images here:

It is of course relatively hard to collect enough Hyatt points for a longer stay in a hotel such as the Park Hyatt Maldives Hada- haa. However, you can combine a purchase through the Daily Getaways with a purchase through Hyatt itself. The points can also be acquired relatively cheap through the regular Hyatt points sales with considerable bonus or discounts. There is currently a bonus of 40% for World of Hyatt points purchases. Tuesday, 4 June - Buy Hilton Honors points and redeem them profitably

Hilton points are even more popular than Hyatt points. At the Daily Getaways far more Hilton than Hyatt packages are offered and in addition to this sale you can also buy points at the same price every few months from Hilton Honors itself. However Hilton Honors website sales are limited to 160,000 points (80,000 plus 80,000 bonus). Through the Daily Getaways sales you can get an additional 440,000 points if you manage to buy the maximum quantity of all offered Hilton packages (before they www.first-class-and-more.com 9 Insider News - May / June 2019 are sold out).

You can buy one each of the two larger packages along with up to three of the smaller packages, the price is always USD 5 for each 1,000 points, that is approximately EUR 4.45.

Recently, the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, which will be opened this summer on the Maldives and will then become the most expensive hotel in the entire Hilton Honors portfolio, has been hyped a lot.

Hilton Honors has introduced a special points category for the resort. You have to pay 120,000 points per night for the “cheapest” accommodation– a 234 m² King Beach Villa with pool. However, the regular price is so high that 120,000 points is still an outstanding deal. You have to be a bit flexible with the dates if you want to book with points, but you can see availability for 14 days on one screen with the flexible search on the Hilton website.

As you can see, the price at the end of March 2020 even with the non-refundable advance purchase rate is EUR 1,591 per night. Taxes and fees are added to this so that the total price is EUR 1,973.

At the same time, you can redeem 120,000 points. Within the Daily Getaways, these cost only USD 600, that is EUR 535. That represents a saving of 73 percent! The taxes and fees are covered by the points as well.

However, there is a little trick: If you have at least a Hilton Honors Silver status, then you always get the fifth night free with points bookings. This reduces the effective price per night to only 95,000 Points:

Thus, for each night you pay effectively only USD 475 or EUR 424. The price for five nights in a luxurious Beach Pool Villa is then a total of 2,120 Euro only - just a bit more than the regular price for one night as shown above. The saving is almost 80%!

The Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi is not the only hotel where you can save a lot of money. You can find another very good opportunity also on the Maldives: the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort. There you can redeem the required 95,000 points not only for a Beach Villa but also for a Water Villa, which would be significantly more expensive if booked regularly.

The regular price in February 2020 would be EUR 697 (EUR 871 incl. taxes and fees) for a Beach Villa and EUR 1,003 (EUR 1,248 incl. taxes and fees) for a Water Villa.

If you redeem 95,000 points this would be USD 475 or EUR 424, which in the case of the Water Villa is a saving of 66%.

If you use the benefit of the 5th-Night-Free promotion, you will pay effectively only 76,000 points per night– that is USD 380 or EUR 339. An excellent price, especially for the Water Villa, where the saving would be 73%.

The Hilton Honors GOLD status mentioned above also gives you various benefits in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort. For example, you can use the happy hour every evening with a free drink in the Vilu Bar. You should also get free breakfast with the Hilton GOLD and DIAMOND status.

Let’s also look at the recently renovated Conrad Bora Bora Nui.

Here, you get the 100 m² King Garden View Suite at a rate of EUR 443 plus taxes and fees, which adds up to EUR 513:

Alternatively, you pay USD 400 for 80,000 Points, that is, EUR 356. If you use the free fifth night, you pay 320,000 Points (USD 1,600, EUR 1,426) for five nights, the price per night is thus onlyEUR 285 – so you save almost half of the regular room price.

There are some hotels with Hilton, which you can book for very few points. A good example of this is the Hilton Garden Inn Bali Airport, which you can book for only 5,000 points per night. It is also extremely well-appointed for an airport hotel. It has a modern design, a pleasant pool area in resort style and a good breakfast.

In July 2019, you pay EUR 75 plus taxes und fees for the cheapest rate, which is then a total of EUR 91. You can also use only 5,000 points:

For 5,000 Points you pay only USD 25 or EUR 22. If you use the 5th-Night-Free promotion here, you pay 20,000 Points (USD 100, EUR 88) for five nights, that is only EUR 18 per night – of course, an incredible price for this hotel, the saving in this case is 80% again.

How to purchase Daily Getaways deals

Important: All offers of the Daily Getaways are aimed only at US residents. However, no check is made on where you live. You just have to put in an Americanised address.

You can see the input form below and we will now give you some tips on using it correctly to avoid problems.

Your Information Just ensure that you do not use any special characters.

Credit Card Information Our experience is that it does not work with AMEX cards because a check is made for these that the card comes from the USA. It is thus best to use VISA or MasterCard.

Billing Address For the “Billing Address” just use a US state which - if abbreviated - best represents the country that you are living in. In Ger- many we always used Delaware since D could also stand for “Deutschland”. The real city usually also works for City or you use a city in the selected US state. For ZIP Code you just search for one from the selected US state. The telephone number is really important. It has to be a US number from the selected US state. You can e.g. google a hotel in the selected US state and everything should work.

How you find out the Timing For the best deals every second counts. All good deals are completely gone within 5 seconds, it is even rumored that in the past, one paticular deal was no longer bookable even after only 0.2 seconds. So you have to plan carefully.

It is best to open two browsers e.g., Firefox and Internet Explorer or Chrome. In one you open the Daily Getaways site and in the other one a world clock. Then you can respond with precision to the second.

Finally, the notice about cookies on the site: If you want to get into the top deals, ensure that, “always accept cookies” is set in the browser settings. Otherwise you may get error messages, which of course would be annoying at the crucial moment.

COPA or to give it its full name, Compañía Panameña de Aviacion, was formed in 1947 with the support of local investors and Pan American Airlines, which took a share of 32%. In its early years, the airline served mainly national routes with a small fleet of DC-3 piston aeroplanes. With the acquisition of more modern turboprop aircraft in the 70s, international flights to neigh- bouring countries began. In the 1980s, the first jet was acquired with a Boeing 737 and from that point onwards the focus was on international expansion including into the US market.

A further growth trigger came in 1998 when Continental Airlines acquired 49% of COPA and the airline was now integrated into its worldwide network. The current livery of the COPA Airlines fleet is still strongly based on the original Continental colour scheme. In 2006, like Continental Airlines, COPA saw entry into the Skyteam Alliance and thus for the first time COPA became part of a global alliance. The fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft was continuously expanded and many new routes added to the USA/ Canada, Caribbean and in South America.

After the merger of Continental with United in 2011 and the entry of the new combined airline into the Star Alliance, COPA also changed alliance and in 2012 became the first Central American member of the world’s biggest air transport association, Star Alliance. Today, COPA serves 81 destinations in North and Latin America with a fleet of 105 aircraft.

The loyalty programme

Since 2015, COPA has had its own frequent flyer programme called Connect Miles. Previously, the airline was part of the Uni- ted Mileage Plus programme. The frequent-flyer programme has four different status levels starting with “Silver status” up to the exclusive “Presidential status”. Except the Silver status, which corresponds to the cross-alliance Star Alliance Silver level, you achieve the sought-after Star Alliance Gold status with the other status levels. To get this, you have to fly at least 45,000 status miles plus 4 COPA segments or alternatively only segments. Along with the usual advantages like priority check-in and lounge access, you get unlimited free upgrades on COPA flights to business class if available. Depending on status, these are confirmed between 120h before departure until the day of departure itself. Platinum status owners also get three confirmed regional upgrade certificates and presidential members 6 global upgrade vouchers.

Business class

On the ground

Along with the usual business class services like priority check-in, with COPA you get access to the airlines own COPA clubs, which are located in airports often flown to by COPA like Santo Domingo, Bogota and San Jose as well as the hub Panama. You can see the complete list here. You will find a small snack buffet in the COPA clubs and a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The COPA club in Panama also has showers, which can be useful especially when changing between long-distance flights.

In the Air

Boeing 737-700/800

The Boeing 737 versions 700 and 800 form the backbone of the COPA fleet. In business class you find modern reclining seats which have an individual seat entertainment system. The aircraft is sometimes used on long distance routes like Panama to Buenos Aires or Montevideo, where the recliner-seats naturally do not offer a state-of-the-art flight experience.

Boeing 737MAX-9

With the addition of the Boeing 737MAX-9, COPA Airlines is for the first time offering a completely flat business class. The seats are fitted in a 2-2 configuration and can be transformed into a flat bed. The first route that this seating arrangement will be used is San Francisco.

The perfect seat

Practically, there is no really bad or particularly good seat in the Boeing 737 business class. If you are easily disturbed by noise or light from the galley, you should avoid the first row if possible.

Economy class

The COPA Airlines economy class is an average on-board product. The seat pitch and the upholstery are ok and there is an entertainment system at each seat. Food and drink are also included on all flights and on flights of over three hours, a hot meal is served.

The perfect seat

Together with the standard seats, with COPA you can also purchase a seat with extra legroom such as in the exit row for a supplement. On the long routes to South America, this can be a good investment.

The seats in row 5, in the premium section of the economy class, offers the best comfort according to the experiences of many passengers. Seats in row 8, which have no window, and seats in the last row should be avoided.

Last summer, Mandarin Oriental took over the idyllic CastaDiva Resort & Spa on the banks of Lake Como. Now the luxury resort has been re-opened after extensive renovations as the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como– newly designed by the renowned interior architect Eric Egan, who created a mix of modern Italian elegance and subtle Asiatic charm.

Located in a secluded area in the middle of botanical gardens, the Villa Roc- cabruna from the 19th century forms the centrepiece of the property, consist- ing of 21 rooms, 52 suites and two villas. In the restaurant „L`Aria“ on the lake shore, chef Vincenzo Guarino serves traditional Mediterranean dishes with local seasonal produce while the ”CO.MO Bar & Bistrot“, with its extensive terrace for traditional aperitifs or cocktails, is inviting after dinner– lake view included.

A highlight of the resort is the pool with a sun deck floating on a pontoon floating in the lake. The pool bar provides drinks and snacks through the day. The spa offers four private spa suites, a beauty-studio and a fully equipped fitness centre. Milan Malpensa airport is about an one-hour drive away.

Towards the end of this year, Kempinski will open the first five-star luxury resort on Cuba: The Cayo Guillermo Resort Kempinski is currently being built in Cayo Guillermo – about 500 kilometres east of Havana – right next to the famous white sand beach of Playa Pilar. It will have 245 rooms and suites.

The highlight of the resort will be the water villas with a size of at least 75 square metres - similar to the typical Maldivian water villas. Like the 200 square metres Presidential Suite, all are equipped with private pools.

A spa, extensive pool landscapes, several restaurants, a lobby bar and a ci- gar-bar complete the offer. The owner of the Cayo Guillermo resort is the Grupo de Turismo Gaviota. The first five-star hotel in the country, the Gran Hotel Man- zana Kempinski La Habana, which was opened two years ago in the heart of Havana and also run by Kempinski since then also belongs to them.
