3 “I believe doctoral research will help me broaden my horizons in the interface between Māori culture and environmental engineering.”

Nona is a PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering. His thesis aims to facilitate more efficient collaboration between Māori communities and non-Māori parties to utilise and develop geothermal resources. “As a member of Te Ārawa and Tainui , I am regularly engaging with various members of Te Ārawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa hapū and obtaining historical and cultural mōhiotanga (knowledge) of Māori communities’ spiritual and physical links with geothermal resources in the central North Island. I also explore the different worldviews associated with geothermal development to pursue holistic decision-making and ensure cultural, environmental, social, and economic sustainability. “Within geothermal development, Māori communities are under-benefited, and with little sustainability, our Te Ārawa and Tūwharetoa people are at risk of losing the very gift that our ancestors have thrived with for hundreds of years. “I am originally from Rotorua where I was immersed in Māori culture and language, and utilised geothermal resources as a member of the local community. By combining my cultural heritage with an education from a western engineering institute, I have the ability to help facilitate sustainable change and increase cultural awareness in the engineering space for our people. “I hope to raise our younger generation's awareness of past, present and future issues that Māori communities may face if the current direction of geothermal utilisation continues.” Nona Hohepa-Taute is a PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering. He is a recipient of a Ngāti Mākino Iwi Authority scholarship and GNS Science Doctoral Research Award.

5 “I learned so many new skills during my postgraduate studies, and it allowed me to develop both professionally as a scientist and grow as a person.”

Rebecca is a graduate of the Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences and a lecturer in Wine Science at the University of Auckland. Her PhD research investigated how different temperatures used during wine fermentation impacts the metabolism of yeast. “I chose to pursue my doctorate because it was exciting to be able to select a PhD topic that was interdisciplinary, combining my love of genetics and aroma chemistry. My decision to undertake my studies at the University of Auckland was for its strong research culture and world-class science performance. “My PhD has provided me with many opportunities. At an academic level, my research resulted in the publication of three journal articles in highly-regarded journals in the field of wine science. I was also able to attend three international conferences and present the work from my thesis. “At a professional level, I was able to work for my supervisor as a lab technician for a year after my PhD, which led to developing commercial wine yeast strains along with some teaching experience. This led to postdoctoral and teaching work which was essential for getting my academic position at the University of Auckland. “I have also made lifelong friends and developed networks for research collaboration.” Rebecca Deed is a recipient of the Janet Bain MacKay Memorial Prize, the Frances Briggs Memorial Prize in Plant Sciences, and the Bright Futures Doctoral Scholarship.

6 Postgraduate research

Postgraduate research is a cornerstone of the University of Auckland. The breadth of research being conducted at the University means we offer a wide range of disciplines to our research students. There is a wealth of opportunities for you to undertake research as a postgraduate student: from small research projects to in-depth doctoral theses. Leading researchers The University has more internationally and nationally esteemed researchers than any other tertiary institution in New Zealand. This means you could be working alongside internationally respected researchers on a project of global significance, whilst building your international networks and a reputation of excellence. 7 “As a Pacific student, the University’s Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS) provides valuable academic and pastoral support that is second to none.”

Julie recently completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours), investigating the perceptions of Māori stroke survivors and their whanau on the use of a robotic aid to assist rehabilitation. She will be extending her research into a PhD, focusing on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease among Pacific people living in New Zealand. “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of preventable death both in New Zealand and globally, and Pacific people in particular experience a disproportionately higher burden compared to the general population. “There is a lack of Pacific health researchers, and a greater lack of Pacific epidemiologists in New Zealand. I decided to pursue postgraduate study to help change this and do my part to improve the health experiences and outcomes of Pacific people in New Zealand.” “The reputation of the University of Auckland was one of the reasons that I decided to study here. The calibre of the academic staff and the teaching environment is very high, and there are many internationally-recognised academics in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. “My postgrad study helped me to determine what fuels my passion, and where I want to situate myself in the health workforce. I liked that classes were a lot smaller and you could build networks and relationships with peers, staff members and academics who become colleagues when you complete your studies.” Julie Winter-Smith is a recipient of the Ministry of Health Aniva scholarship and the Pacific Health Workforce Awards.

9 “I enjoy the independence of postgraduate study. Having a major project to manage is a great challenge that is very exciting to me.”

Originally from the UK, Jarrah is a recipient of a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. After completing a Summer Research Scholarship which sparked an interest in further postgraduate study, Jarrah is now studying towards a PhD in Bioengineering. “My work focuses on cardiac mechanics using the Auckland Bioengineering Institute’s cardiomyometer. The title of my thesis is ‘Transient dynamic performance of cardiac muscle during interventions,’ where an intervention is anything that modifies the contractile state of cardiac muscle be that stimulus frequency, muscle length, or use of pharmacological agents. “By performing more physiologically relevant experiments, we can get a better understanding of how the heart works. This is especially useful when looking at diseased tissue (e.g. diabetic) where we can figure out what changes or goes wrong, providing us with information about potential targets for treating these conditions. “I chose the University of Auckland due to its world-leading instrumentation for the study of cardiac muscle, along with the financial security of a doctoral scholarship. The high academic ranking and distinguished reputation of the University was certainly a consideration in my decision to come here for my undergraduate degree. At the time it was the only New Zealand university that offered biomedical engineering and even now, the degree it offers is unparalleled in the country. “Studying bioengineering at the University is something special – it’s a relatively small group which means that you get to know everyone pretty quickly. ABI has a great social committee which organises events catering to all types of people. I’ve made so many great friends through these events that I would have otherwise never met.” Jarrah Dowrick is a recipient of the University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship.

Eloise is a graduate of the Master of Conflict and Terrorism Studies (MCTS) programme. She now works as an Intelligence Analyst for the . “During my bachelors degree, I became interested in understanding wider theories of conflict, peace, and terrorism within political science. These interests led me to the Master of Conflict and Terrorism Studies. “I learnt so many skills I use every day in my role as an Intelligence Analyst – from clear and concise communication skills, to analytical research skills, to the ability to think critically about things that might be taken for granted. “My role is to analyse ongoing trends within crime in Auckland to identify emerging risks or patterns. The New Zealand Police take a prevention first approach towards crime, and my job is to embody this approach by identifying issues within crime before they fully emerge. “I wanted to study at the University of Auckland for its international outlook. I really liked the idea of studying at a university that had a global mindset and I was enthusiastic about the prospect of undertaking an overseas exchange while I was studying. “If you’re keen to work in intelligence in the future, I would really recommend the MCTS. It’s opened many doors for me and without a doubt, it gave me the skills and experience I require to succeed in my current role.” Eloise Sims is a recipient of the 360 International Exchange Award, Auckland Medical History Society Essay Prize and Sir Robert Jones Scholarship in History.

37 “Postgraduate study has helped develop and define my skill set, clarify my creative focus and will provide me with an internationally-recognised qualification that is held in esteem by institutions around the world.”

“I was awarded a Summer Research Scholarship to study methods of integrating musical textures into virtual reality environments. This foundational research was hugely inspiring to me and led directly into the pursuit of further study.” “My research in this area opened my eyes to an ever-expanding array of creative possibilities and research avenues offered by this technology. One of my studies on musical interactivity in virtual reality was accepted into the International Computer Music Conference 2017, and this opportunity saw me travelling to Daegu, South Korea to present my work as a five-day virtual reality installation. “As an aspiring composer, I was drawn to the teaching staff at the University of Auckland. The composition department features perhaps the most diverse collective of internationally- recognised composers and lecturers in the country. The level of support offered by the department allowed me to progress further and achieve more than I ever could have without their expertise and enthusiasm. “When I travel overseas to conferences or music festivals, my alma mater is always a conversation starter. So many students from the University of Auckland have gone on to make names for themselves as international composers and as teachers at other world- class universities. “I decided to pursue postgraduate studies when it became clear to me that I had only begun to scratch the surface of my area of interest – my research focus had become my passion and I wasn’t ready to give it up. I hope this qualification will lead me further into a career in academia and freelance composition.” Clovis McEvoy, Master of Music student, is a recipient of the University of Auckland’s Summer Research Scholarship and Masters Guaranteed Scholarship.

43 “I am fortunate that my years at the University of Auckland have provided me with opportunities and experiences that I will carry with me for life.”

Xavier is a Master of Science in Geography graduate. He works as a Poukokiri Rangahau Māori (Senior Librarian, Māori Research) at Auckland Council. “My postgraduate interests came about in my third year of undergraduate study, helped greatly by having enthusiastic lecturers. I think some of their energy rubbed off on me. “The people I encountered and the opportunities that came out of that are the main highlights from my time studying. Meeting people and learning about their interests enriched my time at university. “I am a research librarian specialising in Māori subject matter. My interests span history, to arts and crafts, to whakapapa research. I help people with reference enquiries in these areas, as well as undertake my own research. “The ability to get on with people from various backgrounds has been valuable and has carried me on to my current job. Research work, collecting and analysing information, and looking at different perspectives are also skills that I have developed and am still developing.” Xavier Forsman () is a recipient of the School of Environment Māori Masters Thesis Scholarship.
