Art’s Histories in Aotearoa New Zealand Jonathan Mane Wheoki This is the text of an illustrated paper presented at ‘Art History's History in Australia and New Zealand’, a joint symposium organised by the Australian Institute of Art History in the University of Melbourne and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Art Historians (AAANZ), held on 28 – 29 August 2010. Responding to a set of questions framed around the ‘state of art history in New Zealand’, this paper reviews the ‘invention’ of a nationalist art history and argues that there can be no coherent, integrated history of art in New Zealand that does not encompass the timeframe of the cultural production of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori, or that of the Pacific nations for which the country is a regional hub, or the burgeoning cultural diversity of an emerging Asia-Pacific nation. On 10 July 2010 I participated in a panel discussion ‘on the state of New Zealand art history.’ This timely event had been initiated by Tina Barton, director of the Adam Art Gallery in the University of Victoria, Wellington, who chaired the discussion among the twelve invited panellists. The host university’s department of art history and art gallery and the University of Canterbury’s art history programme were represented, as were the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the City Gallery, Wellington, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the University of Auckland’s National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries. The University of Auckland’s department of art history1 and the University of Otago’s art history programme were unrepresented, unfortunately, but it is likely that key scholars had been targeted and were unable to attend. -

THE JOURNAL OF THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY VOLUME 124 No.1 MARCH 2015 PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF POLYNESIAN RITUAL ARCHITECTURE SUGGESTS EXTENSIVE CULTURAL SHARING AND INNOVATION ETHAN E. COCHRANE University of Auckland That Polynesian ritual architecture (Fig. 1) displays similarities due to cultural relatedness is uncontroversial. Like many other aspects of Polynesian life— language, culture, belief—there are architectural similarities across islands and archipelagos that are a product of people learning from each other, shared cultural ancestry and, perhaps less often, independent invention or convergent evolution (Kirch and Green 2001). There is also a long history of research on the cultural relatedness of Polynesian ritual architecture. In the 19th century Fornander (1969: 33-35, 59) suggested that some later Hawaiian heiau ‘ritual architecture’ owed their distinctive form to building techniques learned from voyagers newly arrived from the south. Later, archaeologists and anthropologists such as Emory (1933) and Linton (1925) suggested inter-archipelago interaction and ancestral connections as explanations for similarities in ritual architecture. Discussing the use of shaped, rectangular stone slabs set on end in a variety of ritual architecture, Linton outlined the evidence both for the independent invention of this construction technique throughout Polynesia, and contrastingly for its singular origin and dissemination throughout the region, “although the originating group [of islands] cannot now be determined” (Linton 1925: 19). This document has been created from historical website content. 2010 Academy Annual Report The 2010 Academy Annual Report details the accomplishments of the Academy of the Royal Society of New Zealand throughout the year. Chair’s foreword In January 2010 the final act of “embracing the Humanities” within the Royal Society took place with the signing of an MOU between Te Whainga Aronui The Council for the Humanities and Te Apārangi the Royal Society of New Zealand. President Dr Garth Carnaby described this as landmark decision for both organisations. “For the first time there will be an organisation in New Zealand that promotes excellence in research and scholarship across all the disciplines and areas of knowledge.” The CV’s of the existing fellows of the Council for the Humanities were reviewed by the Academy Executive and these people were admitted to the Fellowship by a special resolution at the Fellow’s AGM. The Academy has continued to provide “information pieces” and forward- looking contributions on present and emerging debates that were introduced in 2009. In 2010, 2 information statements were prepared. Sea Level Rise: Emerging Issues recounted the significant changes in the scientific understanding of this issue since the 2007 Assessment Report by the IPCC. The Darfield Earthquake: The Value of Long-term Research was produced to document the research conducted in New Zealand over many years on how to construct and strengthen buildings to improve performance during large earthquakes. The application of this science and engineering undoubtedly played a big role in limiting the damage and injury caused by the 2010 Christchurch earthquake. -
