A strong international focus The University of Auckland has a strong international focus and is the only New Zealand member of , the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities – international consortia of research-led universities. Today more than 5,500 international students from 110 countries choose to study here, while the University’s 360° Auckland Abroad Student Exchange programme enables New Zealand students to spend one or two semesters at one of the University’s more than 90 university exchange partners around the world. As well as being New Zealand’s top university, The University of Auckland is the country’s largest. It has a strong focus on quality with selective entry to all programmes. We recommend that students have a second choice option for each course with limited enrolment availability. Students from these areas must apply early, in particular for Semester 2. Also, they must upload updated transcripts including all courses they have taken and provide the course outlines when applying for concessions.

You can pre-register for classes before arrival. Once accepted into the COPEX programme, you need to confirm your offer online. Afterwards you can initiate course enrolment at www.auckland.ac.nz/sso-enrol.

You will need to apply for concession for courses with prerequisites. The University’s faculties will assess whether your prior study meets relevant course prerequisites and notify you accordingly. Detailed instructions on course enrolments are also provided in the offer of admission letter.

A number of rooms in the University halls of residence are set aside of exchange students who apply for accommodation. Once you receive your visa you will be allocated a room. Is it mandatory? No. However, we strongly advise students to attend our orientation week, as we provide helpful settling-in information and events that give students a wonderful opportunity to meet other students and make new friends.

How much does it cost? There is no extra charge to attend orientation events specific to international students, but the University organises a range of orientation activities such as concerts and sporting events, which you may have to purchase tickets for. The tickets are never expensive!

Health Insurance

Do you have mandatory health insurance? Yes

Brief details: All international students are required to have appropriate health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

The University of Auckland has selected the Studentsafe-University policy as the preferred insurance policy for international students and will apply the Studentsafe-University charge to your account by default upon enrolment. This charge is removed either after you have paid the Studentsafe– University premium or after a waiver for an alternative insurance policy has been granted.

Detailed information about insurance is provided in the offer of admission letter as well as on our health and insurance website at www.auckland.ac.nz/is-insurance. The Studentsafe-University insurance policy covers up to 16 days before the start and 16 days after the end of a semester. All international students have to pay our compulsory insurance fees to The University of Auckland or alternatively apply for an insurance waiver before the start of semester if they have already bought a policy which complies with our insurance policy requirements.

Can this be waived by my own policy? Yes. If your policy matches the criteria. You will need to supply a waiver form to our insurance administrator. We will then assess if a waiver can be allocated.

Additional costs Do I have to pay any mandatory costs? No.

Estimated living expenses (in NZD): Students should expect to pay NZ$20,000- $30,000 per year (NZ$400-$550 per week) for accommodation and day-to-day living expenses, including meals.

Flats (apartments) range from NZ$200-300 per week excluding bond, utilities, etc. Homestays range from NZ$220 per week (plus a NZ$205 non-refundable administration fee)
