Fall 2008 3 From the Executive Director Dave Archer Under the leadership of President Bob Cimmino and the tireless efforts of our volunteer Board of Directors, BCANY had a great year in 2007-2008. (The highlights of 2007-2008 are contained in this issue.) Our 27th Annual Fall Clinic is shaping up as a great learning, social and professional experience. I encourage you and your entire staff to attend this clinic – you will not be disappointed. Complete information on the Fall 2008 clinic is inserted in this issue. Our website is changing. Digital Sports is designing a new website for us. The web address will not change: www. BCANY.org. This is a huge step forward for BCANY as the new site will provide the opportunity to communicate more often and more effi ciently. This is a major change for us and we hope that you will be patient as we make this transition – as I am confi dent you will like the results! This past summer in Louisville, I was honored to be elected President of the National High School Basketball Coaches Directors for the next three years. The main goal of NHSBCD is to provide a strong and infl uential voice for high school basketball coaches at the national level (related article in this issue). The NHSBCD has 22 states allied together and is growing steadily. This meeting of the leaders of state basketball coaches associations is like a “clinic” on how to improve the operations of the organziations. Great exchange of ideas! As the President of NHSBCD, I had the opportunity to make a presentation to the Board of Directors of the National Asssociation of Basketball Coaches at their meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. I was able to bring out the concerns of high school coaches to a very receptive group. The BCANY Executive Committee met in early August to plan for this year and beyond. BCANY is now in its 27th year as an orga- nization. We have grown both in number of members and more signifi cantly in programs and activities to serve our coaches and players. BCANY operates on 16 “Core Processes” that are listed in this issue. I urge you to renew your membership or join for the fi rst time as soon as you can and I will process memberships each week. I look forward to your involvement in BCANY activities. I will be as responsive as possible to any questions or requests. I am a retired Social Studies teacher, but keep busy with BCANY work and other endeavors. If I am not home when you call, I will usually be able to get back to you within a day or two. It is easiest to reach me by email: [email protected] I look forward to seeing you at the clinic. Regards, Dave

Fall 2008 17 President’s Column Bob Cimmino, Mount Vernon HS Certainly 2008 clearly illustrates the status and im- portance of sports worldwide as evidenced by the spectacular Beijing Olympic Games. It is no secret to our fraternity that sports transcends politics and allows for the complete education of our youth. We are fortunate to be in a position to stay involved and make a difference in so many lives. Summer 2008 has been an interesting experience to say the least as we in Mt. Vernon faced the budgetary ax in an austerity situation. When encountering elimination, you really un- derstand how important sports are to your community. Hopefully, we march on with private funding. Our locker room in Mt. Vernon is seasonal – we share with varsity football and . I readily admit I totally enjoy seeing football crowd in there as I know that the weeks will pass and soon we will be able to get down to business – to do what we love to do – namely basketball. I hope you are as anxious as I am to get started. I do know if you are not excited at this time of year, it is time to move on! I look forward to seeing all of you at our October Clinic. I think it may be the best ever. Our whole staff will be there as we use the clinic as our offi cial coaching starting date in which we plan our strategies for the upcoming season.
