Walk Play Give WALKWGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND PLAY 2019 ANNUAL REPORT GIVE2019 ANNUAL REPORT PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE quite successful, allowing us to award a larger amount to each of our caddie scholars. We are quite excited about our lineup of clubs this year, particularly our Pro-Am to be held at Sleepy Hollow in July. Our fund’s success was somewhat bittersweet, as we lost two past presidents, Mr. Robert J. Bluestone and Mr. John J. Pinto; and two long-time board members, Mrs. Gloria Bogle and Mr. Oliver Lazare. Our sincere condolences to their families. ABOUT WESTCHESTER COUNTRY CLUB Three-time U.S. Amateur champion Walter J. Travis laid out the two 18-hole golf courses at Westchester Country Club, just 30 miles outside New York City, that opened in 1922. The courses were built by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn who built the modern course at Shinnecock Hills toward the end of the same decade. The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years.

  • Moments of Life Made Possible by Hospice and a Little Dog…
Summer 2018 3 0 Ye a r s Accredited by the of Service Joint 1988-2018 Commission Moments of Life made possible by Hospice and a little dog… By Janice Valentino as told by Marilyn Serino It had been about six weeks that my brother Michael had been living at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, where I too had been staying for about three weeks. It was mid-February when Mike began talk to me about a dog. I asked if he was talking about his daughter’s dog, Delilah. He replied No. I asked if he was referring to my own dog, Piper. Again, Mike told me No. Mike mentioned the dog a few more times until he finally feel asleep that afternoon. I had no idea what dog he was talking about and soon forgot about it. Later that day, I overheard staff members talking about a little dog that was sleeping under the bushes on the grounds of the residence. Apparently, this little dog was either lost or abandoned and had been seeking refuge from the cold on the property. Being the dog lover that I am, I rescued the little visitor who was badly in need of some TLC, brought her home to be bathed, fed and took her to our vet to be checked out. I was thrilled when she received a clean bill of health. When I returned to Kaplan to be with my brother Mike, I was grateful to be able to bring along my new little friend. When I walked into Mike’s room, his first response was “Oh wow, Crash is here”.

Vol. 42, No. 2, March–April 2012, pp. 146–165 ISSN 0092-2102 (print) ISSN 1526-551X (online) http://dx.doi.org/10.1287/inte.1120.0626 © 2012 INFORMS Assessing Golfer Performance on the PGA TOUR Mark Broadie Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, New York, New York 10027, [email protected] The game of golf involves many different types of shots, including long tee shots (typically hit with a driver), approach shots to greens, shots from the sand, and putts on the green. Although determining the winner of a golf tournament by counting strokes is easy, assessing which factors contributed most to the victory is not. In this paper, we apply an analysis based on strokes gained, introduced previously, to assess professional golfer performance in different parts of the game [Broadie M (2008) Assessing golfer performance using Golfmetrics. Crews D, Lutz R, eds. Sci. Golf V: Proc. World Sci. Congress Golf (Energy in Motion, Inc., Mesa, AZ), 253–262]. Strokes gained is a simple and intuitive measure of each shot’s contribution to a golfer’s score and was imple- mented by the PGA TOUR to measure putting in May 2011. We apply strokes gained analysis to extensive ShotLink™ data to rank PGA TOUR golfers in various skill categories and to quantify the factors that differen- tiate these golfers. Long-game shots (those starting over 100 yards from the hole) explain about two-thirds of the score variability among PGA TOUR golfers. Tiger Woods is ranked first in total strokes gained, and at or near the top of PGA TOUR golfers in each of the three main categories: long game, short game, and putting.
