SCHOOL HISTORY Berkshire was founded beneath the “dome” of Mount Everett by Seaver Burton Buck, a Harvard graduate and former Hackley School teacher, in 1907. During his 35 years as Headmaster, Buck transformed Berkshire from a foundling school into a substantial and vibrant institution characterized by an appreciation of nature and experiential learning combined with classical classroom teaching. The 1990s saw continued curricular innovation, with new curricular programs including the Ritt Kellogg Mountain Program and the Chinese language program. The 2000 capital campaign resulted in the establishment of three faculty chairs, the construction of two girls’ dormitories, and the doubling of the school’s endowment. In 2009-10, new programs known as “The Berkshire Model” were implemented. These programs—including global learning, sustainability, writing and critical thinking, philanthropy, and service learning—go beyond the school’s core curriculum, preparing students for lifelong learning. In this year, the Education with Wings aeronautical science course was introduced. In the past five years, Berkshire has made continued facilities improvements, including a new music complex in the student center, a new dance studio in the gymnasium, 12 new tennis courts, a restored theater, a new math and science center, and a new fine arts center and gallery. As a Green Ribbon School, Berkshire demonstrates an active commitment to sustainability. In 2012, an eight-acre solar field came online, producing 40% of the school’s energy needs.
