It is obvious—at least for rational thinking—that the truth is a predicate that describes the universal, as the patriotism is the one that describes the individual or group. There is only one truth, but there are many pa- triotisms. Within this coordinate system, we should rather talk about the patriotism of the truth: as the universal bears greater value than individual, so, first, one should be a patriot of the truth, and only thereafter a patriot of a group (the group is not necessarily a people, a nation, or a state). The patriotism of the truth is the true patriotism, as it comprises in itself or replaces itself (or subordinates under itself) the patriotism of a group as it is com- monly understood. Thus, we can read and interpret the famous words of Peter Chaadaev that the love of the truth is much more beautiful than the love of the Fatherland. -

Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality. -

These sentiments were prevalent up until the union’s dissolution. Something which created an identity void, reinvigorating the need for spirituality. The idea of belonging to a Church was encouraged, in which Orthodoxy emerged as a solution for the lack of identity and provided a source of piety for the people. Many studies of Old Church Slavonic do not seem to take into full account its nature as a literary language and often neglect the necessary historical perspective needed for a more faithful reconstruction of its concrete functioning. Before introducing the subject of my talk, I wish to stress that I will not be speaking today about the main topic of the Conference, i.e. the history of Slovene. I could of course ask for leniency and remind you that there was a time when Old Church Slavonic was in fact called »Old Slovenian«; but this took place long ago and would be of little assistance for our present purposes.1 Leaving aside the problem of the different names given to that language even nowadays (in addition to ’Old Church Slavonic’, we find the concurrent terms of ’Old Slavic’ and ’Old Bulgarian’), I prefer to reveal the main argument of my article: despite the fact that Old Church Slavonic is universally recognized as the first literary language of the Slavs, it is very often evaluated from a narrow historical-comparative perspective that does not take into full account its characterizing features as a true literary language. INTERSLAVIC Zonal Constructed Language
INTERSLAVIC zonal constructed language an introduction for English-speakers Interslavic zonal constructed language is an auxiliary language, which looks very similar to real spoken Slavic languages in Central and Eastern Europe and continues the tradition of the Old Church Slavonic language. Interslavic shares grammar and common vocabulary with modern spoken Slavic languages in order to build a universal language tool that Slavic people can understand without any or with very minimal prior learning. It is an easily-learned language for those who want to use this language actively. Interslavic ena- bles passive (e.g. receptive) understanding of the real Slavic languages. Non-Slavic people can use Interslavic as the door to the big Slavic world. Zonal constructed languages are constructed languages made to facilitate communica- tion between speakers of a certain group of closely related languages. They belong to the international auxiliary languages, but unlike languages like Esperanto and Volapük they are not intended to serve for the whole world, but merely for a limited linguistic or geo- graphic area where they take advantage of the fact that the people of this zone understand these languages without having to learn them in a difficult way. Zonal languages include the ancient Sanskirt, Old Church Slavonic, and Lingua Franca. Moscow’s brutal violation of Ukraine’s ter- ritorial integrity and its defiant rhetoric with references to the ambiguous no- tion of Russkii Mir (Russian World) – a geopolitical vision that ostensibly compels the Kremlin leadership to act as protector of all “Russians and Rus- sian-speakers” irrespective of where they live, thus placing a stronger emphasis on ethnic rather than civic understanding of Russianness – appear to mark a clear break with the policies pursued over the previous 20 odd years, when Russia’s conduct seemed to be based on two main pillars: upholding interna- tional law in its foreign policy and seeking to build a civic nation of rossiiane in its domestic politics. But if this radical shift did indeed take place, what is it that Russia is now striving to achieve? What is its ultimate strategic objective? Do we now have a better sense of what is the nature of the supposedly “new (ethnic-based) Russian identity” and how the latter will help shape the coun- try’s international behavior?1 It would appear that Vladimir Putin sought to shed some light on these is- sues in his speech at the July 1, 2014 gathering of Russian ambassadors in Mos- cow (Putin 2014). -
