Program overview: is one of the most beautiful, culturally unique, and historically significant regions of . Although now a federal state of Germany, Bavaria has preserved a local culture and regional history rooted in the Middle Ages that is distinctly different from that found in other parts of Germany. Known as a Nazi stronghold during World War II, it has become an economic powerhouse in recent years, currently serving as the headquarters for such companies as BMW, Audi, and Puma AG.

This Study Abroad Course starts in Munich where you will visit Nymphenburg Palace, the Neue Pinakothek art museum, the BMW museum, take a brewery tour and an historical walking tour of Munich, and of course a visit of the Hofbräuhaus. Day trips include visits to the medieval city of Nuremberg (including a visit to the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds) and to the Concentration Camp Memorial. The second part of the Course takes you on a tour of the Bavarian Alps with visits to Neuschwanstein Castle, Berchtesgaden (including a tour of Hitler’s Eagle Nest and bunker system), and a spectacular train ride up the , Germany’s tallest mountain. Class participation, including contribution to discussions and attendance, is expected in all phases of the Course. Questions about the course content should be directed to Dr. Chamberlin.

Eligibility requirements (degree-seeking students):
