LIST OF HOSPITALS in the Consular District of the Atlantic Provinces (As of March 2015)
This report is for health related services available in the Atlantic Provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island and Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
Atlantic Canada
In Atlantic Canada, all four provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island) have a toll free, 24 hour - 7 days a week, confidential medical information line for any non-urgent health related question(s) or advice you may need. This service is staffed by registered nurses who can provide the necessary medical information to manage the health concerns of you and your family, either by recommending a treatment, directing you to the appropriate healthcare provider (including the location of the nearest emergency department or urgent care clinic) or after-hours and walk-in clinics.
Their respective websites can also offer other information such as symptom sorters, common health issues along with alerts and basic general health tips. Services are available in English and French, as well as a variety of other languages.
Detachments of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are located throughout the Atlantic Provinces and can always be contacted to provide assistance and information in a medical emergency and can be contacted by dialing 911. Please note, this number should only be used in a real emergency. See below for a list of telephone number for non-medical emergencies.
The need for health care insurance for travelers and potential landed immigrants (legal residents) coming into any of the Atlantic Provinces is a must. Each of the provincial governments has an extensive national health insurance program for permanent residents and legal residents. A resident is defined as: "a person lawfully entitled to be or to remain in Canada who makes his home and is ordinarily present in the province, but does not include a tourist, a transient or a visitor to the province.” There may be a mandatory waiting period following the arrival of a landed immigrant into the province before an individual can qualify for the plan so it is best to check with the province where you plan to reside about its provincial medical coverage. Visitors (non-immigrants) are not eligible for the provincial government sponsored hospital and medical services plan and should therefore make sure that their medical insurance provides adequate coverage while overseas or obtain medical insurance protection for international travelers.
Saint Pierre and Miquelon
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon's health care system is almost entirely public and free for residents only.
In 1994, France and Canada signed an agreement supporting the development of regional cooperation to foster collaboration between the two countries in various fields. The medical, hospital and sanitation fields were part of that agreement. When Saint-Pierre and Miquelon citizens need care outside the archipelago, over 80% are treated in Canada (mainly in St. John's, Newfoundland).
