    1 PENDAHULUAN Latar Belakang Pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia yang semakin baik berdampak pada perubahan pola perilaku masyarakat dalam memilih moda transportasi. Masyarakat yang dahulunya memilih menggunakan transportasi darat dan laut, sekarang ini mulai beralih ke transportasi udara. Fenomena ini menjadi peluang bagi pelaku bisnis di industri transportasi udara seperti maskapai penerbangan. Belobaba (1987) menyatakan bahwa pembagian maskapai digolongkan menjadi 3 bagian, yaitu low cost carrier, hybrid dan full service. Setiap golongan memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda beda, lost cosr carrier fokus terhadap harga sedangkan full service carrier fokus terhadap service sehinggan menciptakan pengalaman yang baik bagi konsumen sementara hybrid berada di tengah tengahnya yaitu fokus terhadap harga namun tidak meninggalkan service untuk penumpang. Gambar 1 menunjukan penggolongan maskapai di Indonesia. Sumber : Belobaba (1987) Gambar 1 Penggolongan maskapai di Indonesia Pertumbuhan penumpang transportasi udara di Indonesia mengalami peningkatan sebesar 16% - 20 % setiap tahunnya. Diprediksi angka ini akan terus meningkat pada tahun 2021 menjadi sekitar 180 juta jiwa bepergian menggunakan moda transportasi udara. Prediksi peningkatan pertumbuhan penumpang maskapai tersebut dapat dilihat pada Gambar 2. Melihat data pertumbuhan penumpang tersebut, hal ini dapat menjadi peluang bisnis di dalam industri penerbangan meskipun keuntungan yang didapat tidak begitu besar. Maskapai penerbangan harus bekerja ekstra dan berfikir kreatif agar mendapatkan keuntungan maksimal dari cost yang besar. 2 Sumber : IATA (2005) Gambar 2 Prediksi pertumbuhan penumpang maskapai di Indonesia Garuda Indonesia merupakan salah satu maskapai penerbangan nasional dengan penerbangan ke rute domestik dan internasional. Garuda Indonesia berusaha untuk memperkuat posisi mereknya agar tidak tergeser oleh merek lain. Pertumbuhan penjualan dapat dilihat pada Tabel 1 yang menunjukan market share maskapai dalam industri penerbangan di Indonesia.
