(CRUISE & WALK)

PERFECT FOR: Incorporating a walk into your day. It includes a cruise on Windermere, an optional visit to and a beautiful four mile walk along the western shore of Windermere. The path is well maintained and easy to follow. There are plenty of pebble beaches along the way if you want to stop and take in the wonderful views.

THE ROUTE: • Take a taxi or drive into the Village of Bowness-on-Windermere - If you are visiting before Good Friday or after 31st October you can park all day for free on the Glebe - Between Good Friday and 31st October there is a long stay car park at Braithwaite Fold. We would recommend a long stay because you will need to allow several hours for your tour

• Make your way to the waterfront and Bowness Pier, where you find Windermere Cruises

• Take the cruise for . This is 40 minute journey and enjoy the stunning views of the mountains as your sail north towards Ambleside

• At Ambleside you need to change boats and catch the Cross Shuttle to Wray Castle. Please note if you are sailing before 24th March 2018 there is only one shuttle service a day. This service leaves Ambleside at 10.45 am so you need to catch the 10am cruise from Bowness-on-Windermere in order to catch it

• The shuttle will take you to Wray Castle. This gothic revival castle (owned by the ) was built in 1840, and is open to the public. If you wish to visit you will need to purchase an entrance ticket

• From the castle take the path left of the boathouse to follow the lakeshore south to Ferry House. If you do not want to visit the castle walk through the grounds following the lakeshore - From the castle you walk south to High Wray Bay. The path then hugs the lakeshore to Red Nab and down to Belle Grange Bay - Past Belle Grange Bay the path starts to undulate. At points it climbs up into the woodland but you will still see the lake on your left - At Bass How the path returns to run close to the lakeshore - Continue past the Strawberry Gardens Caravan site - The last kilometre of the route is tarmac and weaves through woodland and open meadows. Be aware there is traffic on this section - Follow the path round the edge of the lake to Ferry House – please be careful of traffic on the main road

• Catch the Cross Lakes Shuttle boat from Ferry House to Bowness Pier. Please note if you are walking the route before 24th March you will need to use the Car Ferry as a Foot passenger. There is small charge to cross as a foot passenger

• When you land at Ferry Nab keeping walking along the road. After the first corner there is a footpath which you can follow back to the Glebe, or you can continue on the road and turn left at the junction with the A592 to return to the village.
