COVID-safe practices The School has registered for the Check In Qld app to enhance our existing COVID-safe practices. Signage and QR codes are now located at a number of areas around the School. Please note that checking in via the Check In Qld app will be in addition to the EVA check-in (therefore visitors will have to sign in twice). The reason for this is that EVA is the process by which the School records a Visitor Registration Log, as the data captured via the Check In Qld app is not available to the School.

SchoolTV Topic of the Week: Celebrating Father’s Day the centuries, the role of fathers has evolved. During the industrial revolution, fathers were more de- tached, spending long hours working in factories, whilst mothers took on the role of primary socialiser and educator of children. Today things have changed dramatically, with many Dads being celebrated for being sensitive, caring and more hands-on. Research has shown that the amount of time fathers are now spending teaching, helping and playing with their children, has trebled. This has transformed our understanding of how fathers shape their children’s lives from the start, challenging conventional ideas of parenthood and gender.

Click here to access this special report about celebrating the important role fathers play in our children’s lives.

SchoolTV is a unique online resource delivering powerful and credible information to empower parents with the skills to address common issues facing young people today. SchoolTV can be accessed any time by RGS parents through the School website under Learn With Us > Student Wellbeing.

NAPLAN Data

In 2008 NAPLAN tests were introduced as an initiative of the Australian government. Participation is compulsory for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All Queensland schools received their 2021 NAPLAN data on Wednesday 25 August. As you may recall, NAPLAN was not held in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19. As you can see from the table below The Rockhampton Grammar School was ahead of the mean score for every domain (numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar and punctuation), for every year level (Year 3, 5, 7 and 9). While this is an outstanding achievement, it is important to remember that NAPLAN is simply a snapshot in time. The data revealed by NAPLAN provides schools an opportunity to review student performance and current education practices being implemented. While the testing programme receives criticism, key benefits include, the papers are independently marked and compare a school’s students against pre-determined national minimum standards by ranking all Australian students in specific bands of achievement. Consequently, analysis of results allows teaching pedagogy to be adjusted to cater for a student’s individual needs and indeed that of a cohort. The Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA), our state governing education body, announced this week that it will not release data for all schools, which it has previously done. This change was reported in the national media on Wednesday 25 August.

Our Book Week parade has certainly been one of the highlights of third term. It was a fantastic spectacle with staff and students dressed as characters from a wide range of books. The parade around the bottom oval enabled an enthusiastic crowd of mums and dads, family members and friends to help celebrate. Thank you for supporting an event that highlights the importance of reading for both work and leisure purposes.

Speaking of reading, Mrs Reniece Carter who is head of Secondary Academic, has prepared a summary of the 2021 NAPLAN results for The Rockhampton Grammar School. The results show that once again, RGS is performing at an exceptionally high standard. In both Year 3 and 5, Mr Bruce Saxby RGS has achieved a higher mean score than that of Queensland and Australia in all five areas of Acting Head of Primary NAPLAN. For example, the NAPLAN mean scores for Reading are: Queensland 428 Australia 437 The RGS 468

The results demonstrate that the teachers and teaching programmes in the Primary School supported by Before School Reading and Learning Support Programmes are achieving great results in the 5 areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy.

At the beginning of this term, Mrs Brady took carer’s leave to assist members of her family. Mrs Brady has decided to extend her leave until the end of the year and then retire after a long and distinguished career at The Rockhampton Grammar School. Mrs Brady has been an icon in the Primary School and her contribution to all activities has been invaluable. We all wish her the best and look forward to her attendance in key functions at the end of the year.

Ms Sheila Thana, who is currently taking Year 2 in Mrs Brady’s absence, will continue in that role for the remainder of the year.

Holidays are only two weeks away. I hope that everyone has a safe break and can refresh for what will be a very hectic final term for the year.

Kind regards

Spelling Bee Years 4, 5 and 6 had the chance to challenge themselves with some super spelling last week. All students should be congratulated for their preparation and enthusiasm to have a go. Well done Year 4s and congratulations to Zachary Holtzman with a convincing 1st, Zara Kummerfeld in 2nd and Lachlan Davis 3rd. Awesome spelling with exhaustion, amazement, billionaire, poisonous and achieve in our list of deciding words. Ten brave Year 5 contestants fought a hard battle. The words wretched, thievery, exploit, pneumonia, precipice, abyss, omitted and ebullience wrangled us down to the final two places, but then we had to go to unfamiliar words in the Commonly Misspelled Word list. The word amateur finally decided the winner. Congratulations to all who participated and well done to the following top 3 winners. 1st: Prahas Peddireddy 2nd: Hollie Richmond 3rd: Giovanna Sidharta Ekamjot Singh won the Year 6 Spelling Bee narrowly from Shriyan Geddada and Joshua Richmond. Having exhausted all the Year 6 extension words, we resorted to the Commonly Misspelled Words List again and words such as accommodate and ceiling found us some winners.

Clockwise from above: Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.

Garden Club News As you are aware from a previous newsletter, we are planning a Christmas stall at the end of this year to raise funds for the ongoing running costs of our little garden and chicken house. Our committee has also decided to run a cake stall to raise money. This will happen in Term 4 in the first week back after the holidays. Please keep an eye out for further information about this. The Annual Rockhampton Regional Council Sustainability competition is on now and schools have been asked to submit photos of sustainable projects happening in their schools. As we are in the process of building a frog habitat, we will be submitting this as our entry into the competition. Please see below a photo of some of the construction process. Last, but not least, the Garden Club thanks all the families who have sent in plant pots for us to use in the gar- den. We will be starting to repot plants that are too big for their pots and some that need thinning out as well. Linda Irwin

Harry Potter Day

On Monday 16th August 2021, 4S had their Harry Potter Day.

The day started off with Mr Scott explaining to us about how the day was going to work. First, we did some drawings of our favourite Harry Potter characters. Some of the students chose to draw Dobby and some chose The Sorting Hat. When we were drawing, Mr Kennedy had an amazing setup to take photos of us in our Harry Potter robes. The photos were fantastic! Mr Kennedy even added lights to our photos to make it look like it was coming out of our wands so it looked like we were casting spells. Some of the spells even conjured up baby dragons! Mr Kennedy had also organised a cool backdrop and a smoke machine, making everything a little more amazing for us! A huge thank you to Mr Kennedy for his time and the effects. It took approximately two hours to get through all of us.

After morning tea, we had a quiz where we had to answer questions from the Harry Potter books and movies. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw were winning the quiz and Hufflepuff were not far behind. Slytherin were cunning at these challenges.

After lunch came the moment everyone was hyped up for, Quidditch. Hufflepuff had a strong surge and closed the gap while Ravenclaw did their best, but it was Slytherin and Gryffindor going neck and neck for the House Cup. In the end, it was the strong and powerful Slytherin that got to hold up the House Cup. Everyone had a great time on Harry Potter Day. By: Lachlan and Zion

2021 Book Week Last week was another amazing week here at RGS but especially so with the annual Children’s Book Week festivities in full swing. A very colourful parade was held on Wednesday with all Primary year levels and the Kindy Unit in full costume on the oval and around the school. Children were also treated to some “guest” readers who read them one of the new CBCA shortlisted/ winners of the annual Book Week competition in the school library during playtime. Classrooms were decorated as part of the celebration and teachers put more of a focus on the enjoyment of reading and books this past week. Book Week was run by a great team of teachers, aides, technical and communications staff. It was a true group effort. Well done everyone. Thanks, must also go to the parents for organising incredible costumes for their children and coming along to enjoy the parade and activities. The parade was an absolutely magical festival of “book fever” and we were truly transported to ANOTHER WORLD!

Jeremy’s Rampage By Zachary Holtzman

“Harry should have triumphed!” screamed Jeremy the kangaroo. Jeremy was an aggressive and quite plump former-pet. He had always wanted another owner since he was first dumped at the safari park. Natie Safari Park was where nasty and naughty pets were taken to run around with other former-pets. Jeremy was there because his stubbornness increased his aggressiveness to maximum boxing-mode. He made friends with the protective Willy Wombat, the posh Tim Taipan and the little-worded David Dingo. “Shut up you fat, pouched-bellied dum-dum!” Sally screeched. She was an argumentative, salty croc. An offensive, mean and extremely rude, salty croc. “You don’t know anything about boxing Jeremy!” she cried. Jeremy had had enough of all of her insults. “Ahem, I will become a professional boxer!” He argued in an aggressive tone. “Dream on, loser!” Sally was heard to say sassily. That was all the encouragement he needed to flee forever.

Jeremy burst through the park gates, smacking his hands against the metal bars. “Arrrrghhh!” he roared through large tears. He sobbed all the way down Park Street, turned right and silently hopped into Filly Street. It was dark and there were no houses apart from the two abandoned flats on either side. Instead of turning off onto I-Walk-Alone Avenue, Jeremy sadly trotted into the landfill up ahead, still weeping. He then sat by a pile of plastic jars and hugged his knees tight. “Maybe I am a loser,” he cried. He wept some more. Soon, he bounced up enraged, and started getting more angry than upset. Then the chaos started. He had fire in his eyes.

He stomped onto Destroy Road. “Grrr!” he yelled as he punched a building window and threw it at a fire-hydrant. Everyone screamed and ran away. Jeremy’s rage had completely consumed him. A roar of acrimony then came out of his mouth. The mayor phoned 911 and the police shot at the angry kangaroo. Jeremy just evaded the bullets and beat up the policemen.

Meanwhile, something was going on in the Boxing Building. James’ boss screamed, “You’re fired!” James, a boxing coach, and his team boxer, Harry, lost a boxing match he really should have won. “Just for losing?” Harry questioned, dumbfounded. “Don’t question me!” the manager commanded. James simply walked out the building and onto Fired Street, as Jeremy turned onto the exact same location…

James watched Jeremy beat up a fire truck, eyes wide and mouth roaring. James thought he would make a definite boxing champion. “Aggghh!” a distant voice screeched. It was James’ time to shine. He just had to calm that kangaroo. “Eh, Kangaroo!” he hesitantly mumbled, “Why don’t you be my boxer? I can coach you. You have some skill in you. What is your name?” Jeremy’s rage had started to merge into cheerfulness. He never felt like that before. He liked it. The aggressive, little (sorry, plump), kangaroo’s greatest desire had come true. Soon, he was unbeaten in all matches and was very close with James.

One day, Jeremy set out to the shops and saw David Dingo. “Hey, Buddy. What’s up?” he exclaimed. James came behind Jeremy and very soon, they were chatting. “I see all your friends are out of the safari park,” he announced. “Must be nice for them!” Jeremy quietly chatted, building up the courage to say the next few words. “Um, James, could you be my owner please?” Jeremy sniffed nervously. “Of course!” James screamed. As they were walking gleefully back to James’ house, Jeremy whispered, “What do you think happened to scaly, old Sally?” “She had problems Jeremy,” he replied, “she didn’t just insult you. She was always bossy and mean.” “Well, we certainly proved her wrong!” Jeremy commented with a smile that extended up to his long, pointy ears.

Coursing (Year 7 moving to Year 8, Year 8 moving to Year 9 and Year 9 moving to Year 10) Current Year 7 and Year 8 students have all completed their initial selections for 2022. Timetable blocks are being determined using this data and students will have to make their final selection in coming weeks. It is important students are aware what each subject entails and consider their options carefully. As such, if students or parents have any questions please feel free to contact me or the relevant Head of Year.

Ms Reniece Carter Year 12 Mock Assessment Timetable All Year 12 students have been given a copy of the RGS Mock assessment timetable. As a reminder, these assessment items will occur during the two-week period, commencing Monday 6 September and concluding Friday 17 September. Results and feedback will be provided to students during their first lesson in Term 4. If Year 12 students or parents have any questions regarding the mock items or the external examinations in October/November please contact me.

Student guidelines for Year 12 Mock exams: • Year 12 students have permission to wear their senior jersey through the mock assessment period in combination with PE or day uniform. Please ensure that you are wearing correct footwear and socks. • Ladies, please comply with all school hair and jewellery regulations. • Gents, please ensure you are well groomed and that you have shaved. • Ensure you arrive early and give yourself ample time to mentally prepare before your exam. The School suggests a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the start of your examination. • If you are remaining on campus in the SRL between exams, you must sign in at the SSO. This is important as it allows the School to account for you in the event of a fire alarm or lockdown procedure.

Please ensure that your exam materials are in a clear plastic sleeve and only contain the material required for that particular exam.

Year 12 External Examination Timetable All parents should have received information regarding the change to the external assessment block (necessitated by the Queensland government decision to move the Ekka Show holiday). All Year 12 students have been given a copy of the assessment timetable set by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). As a reminder, these assessment items will occur during a three week period, commencing Friday 22 October and concluding Wednesday, 10 November. Students will be required to wear full day uniform for their examinations.

Grow in Character and Scholarship Secondary School - Head of Year Reports

At assembly last week we celebrated the Year 7 wonderful way in which our students conduct themselves within their classes each and every day. Our Academic Application Awards with Honours are presented to those students who apply themselves, have a wonderful attitude towards their work and display fantastic behaviour in all classes. It was a pleasure to present these students with their certificates.

Subject Selections for Year 8, 2022 This week in tutorial we will be completing final selections for the student’s subject selections for next year. This is completed electronically and I will step the students through the process in Tutorial but I encourage you to take the time to work through this with your child and assist them with this decision. They can show you the email link at home or talk with you over the phone about it. You can also see a version of the subject groupings on Parent Lounge to use as a discussion starter at home

Term 3 Assessment Thank you for your assistance with preparing the students for their exams and other assessments last week and again this week. I am very proud of how they have developed in their organisational skills throughout the year. It is important to remember that they are all at different stages of the journey and they will improve in these areas over time. On the whole, their positive mindset towards these latest assessments has been wonderful.

Year 8 As the end of Term approaches, assessment has been the focus of Year 8. Whether it be assignments or exams, the Year 8’s have had to get themselves organised to make sure that are making the best use of their time. I have been very impressed by their work ethic and dedication to the tasks put in front of them. Our philosophy is to do your best at everything asked of you and this has been evident through this assessment block. I strongly believe that those that work hard will reap the rewards of their hard work. Please ask your child how their preparation has gone and encourage them to seek answers to any questions that they might have. Uniform has been in the spotlight recently and whilst the majority of Year 8s wear the uniform correctly and with pride there are a few areas we could improve upon. Students are to wear their School hat to and from School. Boys are to wear plain black or grey socks with their long trousers. Students need to change in and out of PE uniform and not think that they can wear Mr John Crossland PE uniform for the full day. If you could remind your child of these simple things, they will avoid receiving a Uniform Infringement Notice. Looking forward to Term 4 - we will be tying together a number of programs that have been running throughout the year. Students will be writing a Gratitude letter to a person who they deem to have done a lot for them over their life so far. Students will also be writing a letter to themselves that they will receive back in 2025 when they complete Year 12. The Year 12 letters are always well received and Students enjoy reading them and reliving their Year 8 days. I look forward to completing the Year 8 Journey with your child in Term 4.

Grow in Character and Scholarship Year 9 This term has certainly flown by as we reach the last two weeks before the September holiday period. Over the last week, the students have been actively involved in assessment with exams and assignments due. This will conclude this week, so it is important that all students remain focused and attentive in class and organised through study preparation each and every day. The final week of school will not be a week of down time with no formal learning as most classes will be beginning new work for the final term. Given that the final term is only short, it is imperative that teachers and students utilise all available time for learning. Therefore it is essential that attendance at school remains a high priority right up until the holidays officially begin. Students have by now had their second preferences collated for classes and electives for next year. Unfortunately some of our electives cannot be offered due to a lack of numbers choosing the subject, which has meant that some of our students have had to make a fresh choice. Can Mr Rod Peckett I please ask once again that parents take the time to check with their children regarding their subject selection choices to ensure that there is consensus in regards to what subjects each student is electing to do in Year 10. Can I take the time to wish all of our families a loving and safe holiday period and a special wish for our boarder families as they re-unite and get the opportunity to share special time together before we meet again in early October to complete the school year.

Year 10 Year 10 students are coming to the end of Term 3. With that comes the Outdoor Education Programme in week 9. All Year 10 will be engaged in the OEP and this forms part of the year curriculum. Students will be venturing all around Queensland in a post-Covid world. Groups will be going to Great Keppel Island, Fraser Island, Carnarvon Gorge, Sailing in the Whitsundays and Cairns/Daintree. There will not be any Year 10 classes at the School during week 9. The Rockhampton Grammar School is a Round Square School. Round Square is an international affiliation of schools founded on IDEALS – Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. Everyone that knows the School, would know that effectively everything that happens here falls under this umbrella. For example, the recent effort by the girls led by Year 12 to cut ponytails to make wigs for cancer patients and raise a Mr Jonathan Burr significant amount of money for cancer research. Year 10 were shown the Round Square website this week. Go to https://www.roundsquare.org/ for a look. 2021 is fast running out for Year 10 students. There are only now 12 school weeks left in the school year. Term 4 is only 8 weeks and the assessment block even shorter with Speech Day timelines. Students should use their time to ensure all work is up to date and preparation is made to ‘hit the ground running’ in a very short Term 4.

Year 11 Dear parents and guardians, I hope you and your family are well given the current climate. It is hard to believe how fast the term has gone; not to mention the fact our 11s will soon be embarking on their year 12 journey! I would like to preemptively congratulate all students on a successful completion of unit two for their subjects. Exam block was undertaken with confidence and determination, something students need to be commended on. Over the remainder of this term and next, I will be conducting SET Plan follow up interviews with all students in grade 11. This is a check in to ensure students are still on the correct pathway and to make any necessary changes before students are locked into subjects for unit three and four. I would encourage families to discuss this (where possible) prior to the interview. Students are asked to sign up for these interviews at the senior school office. In week 9, we will have guest presenters from Legal Aid deliver NAPCANs ‘Love Bites’ programme to the 11s. The programme will build on presentations and sessions we have Mrs Amy Challacombe delivered throughout the year. In short, we will be looking at internet safety, consent and respectful relationships. Leadership camp will be held in the first week of term four. If you have forgotten to fill out paperwork for your child/ren, you can fill the form out this week via parent lounge. Please do not forget, this Friday, September 3 is a pupil free day. If you have any concerns please contact the school office, or myself. Grow in Character and Scholarship Year 12 Well, we are in the final week of preparation prior to mock examinations commencing next week. It is important to remember that these are designed to provide crucial feedback on how students preparation is going, students still have a number of weeks to prepare for their external exams and should be managing their time accordingly. A reminder that during mock exams, students are allowed to wear their Senior Jersey with jeans or PE uniform. Additionally, no normal class timetable will be running however Year 12 teachers are still available to assist students where needed. A more detailed information email will be sent to students this week. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this upcoming exam block, please do not hesitate to contact me. Students have been busy during these last weeks of term, fundraising for important ventures. I congratulate the Year 12 ladies who cut off 20cm or more of their hair to donate to the Cancer Council. They managed to raise over $11,000! This was a follow up fundraiser to the Mrs Persephone Cook High Tea run earlier this term. Well done to Breannah MacKenzie and Anna MacTaggart for organising both of these events. The RUOK? committee are also preparing for RUOK? Day on the 9th September. Students will be selling small badges which students are permitted to wear until the end of Term and will also be holding a bake sale on the 9th September to raise funds for mental health. Please support this committee in their endeavours to raise awareness. As we head into the final three weeks of term for Year 12’s, I would like to wish students all the best on these important preparatory exams a safe holiday. Students, please remember to take time to do things that you enjoy over this upcoming break. It is important for you to start Term 4 fresh and focused.

Science Podium finish in international competition RGS Year 10 students claimed a podium finish in a global science competition in Term 3. Sandee Weerasinghe Meegahawattage, Ella McCauley and Kaviya Vignarajah placed third in the Senior High School category of the 2nd International Youth Microorganism Innovation Experiment Competition - GLC-Pasteur Cup. The global science competition is organised by the Education Bureau of Xuhui District, Shanghai, and the Pasteur Institute of Shanghai, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in conjunction with the GLC International Group. RGS Head of Science Dr Nikki Kelly said the competition was developed to popularise the scientific knowledge of microbiology and the impact on human life, improve young students’ cognition of the microbial world, cultivate the skills of scientific experiment and the spirit of scientific inquiry, and form the concept of active exploration. In 2020, the competition’s inaugural year, over 200 students from 42 schools across the globe participated. This year, students from Queensland were invited to compete alongside 300 students from China, Finland, and France. “The competition involves students training with research scientists from China before selecting a topic around the life of the microorganism,’’ Dr Kelly said. “They must carry out a literature review, before designing an investigation, then experimenting and carrying out data analysis. The task must be wholly designed by the students, and reflect their ability to find, analyse and solve problems.” Sandee, Ella McCauley and Kaviya tested the response of different microbe species to a range of oil extracts from plants, including Australian natives such as eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon myrtle. Dr Kelly said their goal was to look for more organic plant-based approaches to controlling microbial growth with their ideas influenced by the traditional use of native Australian botanicals for indigenous bush medicine.
