Sports Yearbook 2015 Incorporating the Annual Review 2013 - 2014 a Word from the Vice-Chancellor Welcome to the University of Cambridge Sports Year Book 2015 University of Cambridge Sport Sports Yearbook 2015 Incorporating the Annual Review 2013 - 2014 A word from the Vice-Chancellor Welcome to the University of Cambridge Sports Year Book 2015 I am delighted to introduce this annual review of sport at Cambridge. Our students develop their sporting talent through competition at College, University and national level. These pages include accounts of many of their successes over the past year. I know from my own student career that passion for study and passion for sport are often complementary, and I am proud that Cambridge produces excellent achievers in both spheres. The University of Cambridge Sports Centre has now been open for nearly 18 months, and the difference it has made to the University and its members is clear to see. The membership numbers have steadily increased month on month, with a wide range of student, staff, alumni and community members all accessing the world-class facilities, as well as 32 of the University Sports Clubs using the Centre for their training sessions. The Sports Centre has also already hosted a wide range of events and competitions, allowing people to both compete in and watch sport at an incredibly high level. I am particularly looking forward this year to the Women’s Boat Race which will be on the Tideway for the first time on 11 April. Thank you for your support of Cambridge’s dedicated sportsmen and women. I wish you a very successful sporting year. While the opportunity to serve as an officer of a College or University sports club is one of the many ways in which students can further their personal development through sport, there is an increasing need for support beyond the level which the Sports Syndicate has been able to provide through its traditional mechanisms.     INDOOR CRICKET RULES THE GAME I. A game is played between two teams, each of a maximum of 8 players II. No team can play with less than 6 players III. The game consists of 2 x 16 over innings IV. The run deduction for a dismissal will be 5 runs V. Each player must bowl 2 overs and bat in a partnership for 4 overs VI. There are 4 partnerships per innings VII. A bowler must not bowl 2 consecutive overs VIII. Batters must change ends at the completion of each over ARRIVAL / LATE PLAYERS A. All teams are to be present at the court allocated for their match to do the toss 2 minutes prior to the scheduled commencement of their game. I Any team failing to arrive on time will forfeit the right to a toss. The non-offending team can choose to field first or wait until the offending team have 6 players present and bat first. II If both teams are late, the first team to have 6 players present automatically wins the toss. B. All forfeits will be declared at the discretion of the duty manager. I Individual players(s) arriving late may take part in the match providing their arrival is before the commencement of the 13 th over of the first innings.     Indoor Cricket RULES AND REGULATIONS Indoor Cricket is to be conducted under the Official Rules of Indoor Cricket which are sanctioned by Cricket Australia and the World Indoor Cricket Federation. The following local rules and regulations will apply. Team Requirements 1. The maximum number of players per team is 10, of which 8 can bat and 8 can bowl. 2.     The ICCA Cricket Club My 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup Journey To Australia Selection I will fondly remember that day in April when I received a call informing me of my selection for the England U16 indoor cricket squad to play in the forthcoming World Cup tournament in Australia in October 2009. Mike Gatting had made the squad announcements at the Bristol training centre but not confident of selection, I did not attend this event! Having played indoor cricket from the age of 8, I was confident of my abilities but when I saw those big lads at the trials, I thought I had made a mistake. Of course I was overwhelmed and proud to have made it to the initial squad. The task now was to make it to the final squad of 12 players for the tournament. Preparation Our pre-tournament training was mostly based in Bristol over a period of six months. This involved rigorous fitness training as well as honing the skills of playing competitive indoor cricket matches. On a few occasions we played against the U19s and the men’s teams to toughen our approach. Indoor cricket was invented in Australia where they have over a hundred centres compared to our six! Needless to say, the international level of competition was expected to be very strong. This is the fastest format of the game and is gradually gaining popularity in all major Test playing countries. The ECB is taking control over the game from this year and it is anticipated that more quality facilities will be available throughout the country in the coming years.

    Indoor Cricket Administrative Rules and Information I. Prior to the game, players must check-in at the information table with the supervisor or University Recreation Assistant on duty. All University Recreation participants MUST have a Comet Card or the GET app to participate, no exceptions. II. All games will be played on campus unless otherwise mentioned. Check imleagues.com/utdallas for specific location. Teams are expected to report to their court/field 15 minutes before game time. III. NO ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, OR FOOD allowed in UREC facilities. Non-alcoholic beverages are allowed with a secure top. IV. Ejections: Any form of physical combat (pushing, punching, kicking, etc.) at any time during one’s use of the facility while at a University Recreation event is taking place will result in an immediate ejection with further action taken on an individual basis. The officials of each game or any other UREC staff may eject any player or bystander for inappropriate behavior at any time. Ejected players must be out of sight and sound within one minute or a forfeit may be declared. It is the responsibility of the team captain to make sure ejected players leave the area. An ejected player must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports before he/she can play again in ANY intramural event. V. Sportsmanship: All team members, coaches, and spectators are subject to sportsmanship rules as stated in the University Recreation Guidelines. Each team’s sportsmanship (max of 4) will be evaluated by intramural officials, scorekeepers, or supervisors assigned to the game.

Mathias Kondolf, Chair Society is investing in river restoration and urban river revitalization as a solution for sustainable development. Many of these river projects adopt a multifunctional planning and design approach that strives to meld ecological, aesthetic, and recreational functions. However our understanding of how to accomplish multifunctionality and how the different functions work together is incomplete. Numerous ecologically justified river restoration projects may actually be driven by aesthetic and recreational preferences that are largely unexamined. At the same time river projects originally designed for aesthetics or recreation are now attempting to integrate habitat and environmental considerations to make the rivers more sustainable. Through in-depth study of a variety of constructed river landscapes - including dense historical river bend designs, artificial whitewater, and urban stream restoration this dissertation analyzes how aesthetic, ecological, and recreational functions intersect and potentially conflict. To explore how aesthetic and biophysical processes work together in riverscapes, I explored the relationship between one ideal of beauty, an s-curve illustrated by William Hogarth in the 18th century and two sets of river designs: 18th century river designs in England and late 20th century river restoration designs in North America.

    Brookes Goes Walking : A Guide to the Route Starting from Brookes Students' Union: Follow the path to the bridge over the main road. This bridge was built in 1877 to link the two parts of the large Morrell estate on each side of the road below. The road was originally the Stokenchurch Turnpike constructed in 1775. Don't cross the bridge, instead walk down the road and turn right into Headington Park. The park was originally part of the ornamental garden belonging to the Hall where the Morrells lived. Turn left out of the park and cross the road with care. Take the path opposite down to the river. The large new stone building is the new Oxford University Centre for Islamic Studies. The building on the right by the River Cherwell was once the King’s Mill. It dates from the Middle Ages but stopped working in 1832. Turn right along the path. This area is called Mesopotamia, from the Greek for “between two rivers”. The original two rivers were the Euphrates and the Tigris so this Oxford version is on a slightly smaller scale! Along this stretch you will see many pollarded willows, trees which have been cut at about head height. The regrowth was used by local people for poles for building and fencing. Pollarding also prevents the trees from splitting when they get top heavy. On a map of 1887 a ferry was shown to operate here. The fields on both sides are often quite wet. Several fields you will see along the route contain rushes and sedges showing the marshy ground.
