Theriad's Lost Verses 4 Mythic Destiny Introducing the Goose to your Game There are many ways that you can introduce the legend of Throughout the history of Theros, legends exist of a the Great Honking to your game. One suggested path is this: “devil bird” that exists deep within the wild spaces of the First Contact (level 1-3). The characters are present for world. Some cultures claim that it lies beneath the Sun’s the beast’s first feeding. From here they can learn of the Mirror, some say that it lazily moves from place to place somewhat laughable but entirely prescient danger that it in the Dakra Isles, thereby causing those islands to move poses. Perhaps a sage or scholar can fill the characters seemingly at whim or random, and still others swear that it in on the legend, or perhaps the characters find an is the origin of the name of Deathbellow Canyon. There is ancient, brilliant fresco depicting the goose’s final form as even a myth, a rumor, that Nylea holds the egg of this beast Nylea’s champions bringing it down. Use the devil goose, deep within the Setessan forest. One thing that all these hatchling stat block as part of another encounter or even legends share, though, is that this creature is gigantic— on its own. purportedly the size of a small village—and once every Filling in the Gaps (levels 4-7). Once the characters thousand years it is roused from its slumber so that it may learn of the legend, they should be able to investigate the feed. The characters have deeply and honestly: a fat goose. These birds are aggressive, recovered phoenix steel from the Sisters of the Poisoned their maws are filled with sharp teeth, and their honking Promise, but the secrets of forging that metal are lost to noises grate on the nerves and leave behind nothing but time. Theriad's Lost Verses 5 Forging the Phoenix Armaments (levels 8-11). With the wisdom of Jaygrim, the characters have learned that Akmon, hammer of Purphoros, has been secreted away in the Akros mountains by Purphoros’ most faithful priests. They must beseech the priests for their assistance in forging the weapons, but others also seek the temple-forge for reasons entirely their own. The devil goose, adult may make an appearance during the mountain assault, or be encountered as the characters journey towards that place. The Great Honking (levels 13+, and ideally 17+). When the goose appears for the final time, the characters should be equipped with as many of the items as they could craft or recover during their adventures and ready to meet it at the poleis that you have determined. The characters are uniquely suited to press back against the beast’s advances, and the residents of the poleis react as you see fit. In a general sense, the chaos of the battlefield becomes its own character for this experience. Regardless of the outcome, the mythic artifacts that were recovered disappear, flung across the world by the gods themselves at the end of the conflict. Claiming Destiny Defeating the goose is the core drive of the mythic destiny that the characters possess. Even so, it’s entirely possible that their victory—or defeat—may be just the beginning of their growing legends. Should the characters prove successful in defeating the goose, they are regarded as reigning champions and divine heroes across the world. The gods may deem them worthy of a significant piety award, such as 25 points for effectively saving the world. What wonders and challenges await the chosen of the gods, especially when they are still so young in their adventuring careers? Do they stand to join the pages of the Theriad, inspiring citizens and adventurers alike for hundreds of years to come? Should the characters be defeated by the goose, or if other creatures defeat them and prevent them from stopping the goose, it’s entirely possible that they are doomed by Klothys to spend eternity in the Underworld for their failure. Do they make allies? Do they escape, and if so, are they still themselves or are they considered Returned? Finally, there is a third option: the gods themselves. Is the goose truly a natural force, or is it some left over war machine engineered by the archons of ages past? Did one of the gods, such as Iroas or Mogis deploy the goose to Theros as a divine punishment… and if so, would the characters be considered by that god as a threat? The future is yours to foretell. Creating Your Own Destinies Feel free to use this supplement as a template for creating your own mythic destinies. Such an endeavor should include adventures and NPCs that support the characters and their journey into the great unknown of myth, legend, Sampleand demigod status! file
