Dear Parents, Guardians and Students

Although it is only two weeks since school finished it now seems a very long time ago. With the news being dominated by the impact of Covid-19 it is nice to be able to read through our newsletter and remember all the exciting activities our students and staff have been involved in. It is also a time to reminder that, at some point, life will return to normal and that lots more opportunities lie ahead of us.

We are all shaping a very new way of living right now. None of us feel we have found the perfect routine or have any certainty that we are making the right choices about everything from bedtimes, mealtimes, study times and chill times to exercise, reading for pleasure, explaining what is happening in the world and managing all sorts of fears and anxieties about our planet and our loved ones.

We are certain of two things. Firstly, that there is no ‘right way’ for families to organise these new times we live in today. Secondly, if we share ideas then we can all feel that bit more confident we are making the right decisions.

I saw with interest that Amazon’s Audible is opening up free of charge to children. https://www.audible.com/ep/kids-audiobooks

Audio books are a great opportunity to create a whole new way to become immersed in great books. Furthermore, I am sure we have all heard that the BBC will be adding more education content to support parents, carers, students and teachers in the near future. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize

Being a teenager is difficult no matter what, and the coronavirus disease is making it even harder. With school closures and cancelled events, many students are missing out on some of the biggest moments of their lives — as well as everyday moments like chatting with friends and participating in class.

For teenagers facing life changes due to the outbreak who are feeling anxious, isolated and disappointed, know this: you are not alone. I hope that you and your families continue to keep safe and well.

Reading Week

The Library hosted a variety of events across Reading Week. Patron of Reading, Martin Stewart, visited to deliver writing workshops and take part in the Year 8 & 9 Literacy Forum. Author, Lauren St John, founder of Authors4Oceans talked about her passion for wildlife conservation and how it features in her latest book Kat Wolfe Takes the Case.

The busy schedule also included a daily Book Title Quiz, a Lunchtime Book Fair, and a Non-School Uniform Day. Several students dressed up as various well-known book characters and over £1,000 was raised for Book Aid International.

Reading Week extended into the following week as we welcomed ex-Children's Laureate and all-round well known author and poet, Michael Rosen, to – an experience shared with . The visit was a celebration of Michael’s publication of the story of his search for his Great Uncles. Published under the title The Missing, it was a task that took 30 years. The students were totally engaged with Michael’s tale of family and loss and he was very complimentary about our lovely students too tweeting: “Your students were fantastic: a credit to themselves, to the school and the staff.” It was a great opportunity for our students to hear and meet one of the legendary figures from children’s literature.

STEM Week

Students in all year groups enjoyed a variety of events for STEM week which ran from 9 - 13 March. Year 7 enjoyed a trip to Hill End Outdoor Centre for a Sustainability Day, looking at climate change and man’s imprint on the environment.

During the week our budding engineers produced an impressive selection of marble runs with the winners - Ava, Lottie, Darcy, Olivia and Megan producing a spectacular design! Year 8 experienced the weird and wonderful through virtual reality headsets, Year 9 took part in the Crack the Code Cipher Challenge, Year Ten Computer Scientists visited the BMW Mini Plant and saw the robots in action and everyone had the opportunity to try their freehand circle drawing and watch the Rocket Launch demonstration.

April 2020 Book Bus Visit

In January Brown’s Book Bus visited the school and several classes from Years 7-9 had the chance to look at the dynamic stock and order books for themselves. Student Librarians gave up part of their lunchtime to search for exciting new stock for the Library. Students simply couldn’t wait to receive their books and get reading. We can’t wait for a return visit.

National Non-Smoking Week

The Pastoral Team, aided by some of our Sixth Form students, took part in a very successful Non-Smoking Week. There were lots of visitors to the Library to see Mrs Hyde's display of the effects of smoking on health, with many surprised to learn about the different harmful contents that make up a cigarette.

Stone Gallery Competition

Our talented Year 10 Design and Technology students took park in a Product Design Competition with The Stone Gallery of Burford towards the end of last year.

Their task was to design and make a secret storage box suitable for holding a specific range of jewellery on sale in the store. The top three products were intended to be displayed in the shop itself. The Stone Gallery also offered the competition winners Amazon gift vouchers worth up to £20, while publishing an article on their work in The Bridge magazine.

The Stone Gallery's Tom Marshall delivered the brief and judged the final products. First place was awarded to Lucy Howarth with Mia Gorton in second place and Mascot Rai in third. Mr Marshall was so impressed with the quality of work that he ended up taking many further products back to the store to be displayed as a celebration of the group's fantastic efforts. Well done to all who took part! https://tinyurl.com/oylasss https://twitter.com/BurfordSchool www.burford.oxon.sch.uk

April 2020 Study Day at British Film Institute

On Friday 10 January, Head of MFL, Miss Santovety, took her A- level Spanish group to the British Film Institute in London to attend a Film Study Day. The day focused on films influenced by the Spanish Civil War which are prescribed texts in the specifications.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about film language and style as well as important historical periods such as Franco’s dictatorship and the civil war, and learnt about the influence these events had on filmmakers. The session was based on both Guillermo del Toro’s El Laberinto del Fauno and Emilio Lázaro’s Las Trece Rosas, which is the film studied in Year 13.

It was great to see a packed auditorium of A-level Spanish students eager to learn and participate in the sessions and the day was certainly worth the early start and the commute to London!

Linguists Beyond School

On Monday 24 February and Friday 13 March, Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend a talk by Professor Natasha Ryan from University on the advantages of learning languages at GCSE and beyond.

Professor Ryan focused her talk on how students acquire transferable skills when learning languages, the importance of linguists in a post-Brexit Britain, the breadth of careers open to students who have studied a language at GCSE and how languages improve their employability in the future.

Students participated in question and answer sessions which turned up some hidden talented linguists in the audience!

Interactive Spanish Play at Tudor Hall

On 12 March, Mrs Iasisen accompanied fourteen students in Year 10 to Tudor Hall School in Banbury to see a Spanish play with the language used aimed at GCSE students. The actors were brilliant and used lots of visual clues to help comprehension.

Here’s what some our students thought of the performance.

Sophie: I really enjoyed the play. The actors were very interactive and funny!

Aria: In my opinion, the play was very entertaining and interactive, especially when they asked the audience to participate. Although there were only two actors on stage, they did a great job of keeping the story going and I understood everything!

Celia: I really enjoyed the play. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who studies Spanish at GCSE. It was very entertaining.

April 2020 Sixth Form News Sixth Form House University Challenge

Our annual Sixth Form House University Challenge, took place this term before a large audience of sixth form students. Our teams, consisting of Year 12 and Year 13, took part in a series of hotly-contested heats during the week, which resulted in a ‘Grand Final’ involving a third and fourth place ‘play off’ between Heylin and Falkland and a final between Warwick and Wysdom. After a close contest, Heylin came out as the third place winners by 5 points, whilst Wysdom triumphed in the final.

Congratulations to all who took part; your knowledge and the nimbleness of your fingers on the buzzers were awesome!

Cross-dressing, mixed, three-legged hockey

Every year the Sixth Form raises money for Sport Relief or Red Nose Day by staging a Year Twelve versus Year Thirteen cross-dressing, mixed, three-legged hockey match. This year’s event took place during lunch time on what was our last day, and provided some light relief in these difficult times.

The strangely dressed and very enthusiastic hockey players contested in a highly competitive match, with honours finally going to Year 13 who won 3-1.

Thank you to Mr Cowley and Miss Barrie who acted as referees.

A word about our Sixth Form students

As I write we are about to close and our Year 13s are having to come to terms with a premature end to their school careers. I have been so proud of the way they have reacted to the news; their maturity and resilience have helped to set the tone for the rest of the school. Our best wishes go with them, we hope when life begins to return to normal we will be able to unite for one last time and mark their leaving properly. Miss Denny - Head of Sixth Form

April 2020 Berlin & Krakow - the highlight of our Sixth Form

Our trip to Berlin and Krakow has definitely been the highlight of our time in Sixth Form.

Our itinerary was packed everyday, which meant we saw a huge amount of both of the cities and could piece together their history and culture. Our guide, Steve, was amazing and as well as telling us the facts about the places we were visiting, he really made us immerse ourselves in the history that was all around us and think more carefully about the reasons for some of the events that happened.

In Berlin we visited historical sites and memorials such as the Reichstag, which we climbed all the way up one night, The Brandenburg Gate, Olympic Stadium and the infamous Berlin Wall.

When we arrived in Poland after a lengthy coach journey, we were surprised by how beautiful Krakow was given the history of its Nazi Occupation. We really enjoyed exploring the city and travelling by tram to historical sites such as Schindler’s Factory and the Jewish Quarter and spent our free time exploring the markets and tasting the world-famous hot chocolate in the main square.

Our visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau was a very moving day and none of us were quite prepared for what we experienced. All of us recognised the importance of visiting and learning about Auschwitz and other sites of the Holocaust, which were commemorating their liberation 75 years on.

We had the most amazing week away and learned many invaluable lessons. We would not have been able to have such an amazing and immersive experience on an average holiday to these cities and would really recommend the trip to any student, whether they study history or not. April 2020 Fabulous Theatre Weekend

The Drama Department took twenty GCSE and A-level students for a weekend packed with theatre!

After lunch on Friday, the students began an action packed two days in London, led by Mr Brookes and Mr Warren and accompanied by Miss Scott.

The trip started with the train journey to London Paddington and tube to Euston Square. After a quick walk to the hotel, it was becoming increasingly clear that the students were hungry and so we indulged in a two course meal at Wildwood’s in Covent Garden. After a quick tube journey to the Apollo Theatre, students watched and enjoyed a stunning performance of Wicked, which even bought some students to tears.

The next morning, a full English breakfast awaited them and after a prompt checkout and another tube journey, the students arrived at the National Theatre where they learned about the running of the three venues. Students took a closer look at the Olivier Theatre and the Dorfman Theatre, and they completed a back stage tour by seeing the process of set building, creation of back drops, props and costumes with even a glimpse of the horse from the current production of War Horse.

Finally, following a walk across Westminster Bridge, the students arrived at Pineapple Studios. Here students took part in an acting workshop led by a west end performer. Students rehearsed a scene identifying ways they could show truth within a scene from the Wicked production and then performed their own interpretations of this to each other. At the end of the workshop students were treated to a special Q&A session lead by a Wicked cast member. Students were able to ask questions and learned about how to learn from failure and the audition process. To finish off, students spent some time exploring the busy streets of Covent Garden and Leicester Square before heading to Paddington for the train home.

Here are some of their favorite moments: “Recreating the scene from Wicked was so much fun and a great learning experience”- Amelia “The tour really opened my eyes to how many jobs and opportunities there are in theatre”- Clémence “My favourite part was Gracie’s reaction to Elphaba at the end!”- Will Maddie, Keira and Clémence. The 39 Steps

Our second drama performance of the year was The 73 Steps, based on the novel by John Buchan and originally brought to the screen by Alfred Hitchcock. The students were in rehearsal well before Christmas and all their hard work came to fruition over four nights in early February. Staged in the Main School Hall, the cast sang, danced and amazed their appreciative audiences with this tale of espionage, murder and intrigue.

Spanish Exchange students visit Burford

On Thursday 6 February, Burford welcomed students from our partner school in Seville.

Their trip began with a tour of the Cotswolds and a visit to take in the sights of Oxford. Later in the week, our guests spent a day in school with their partners to gain an understanding of life in a British school. They delivered two presentations to Year 9, in which they talked about where they come from, their school and their experiences in . The week culminated with an exciting joint trip to Warner Brothers, Harry Potter World and despite the very cold British weather, everyone focused on their positive experiences. Here are some of the comments:

“This trip has been a unique opportunity because of the places we have visited and the people we have met”. Andrea Garcia

“I was very nervous at the start because I wasn’t sure what to expect but now I feel this has been one of the best experiences of my life. I would do it all over again if I could”. Luis Borjabad

“It has been a great experience which I would recommend everybody. We have got to know people and others that we didn’t know and that we now love”. Javier Marquez

The term of the new decade got off to a busy start in the Music Department.

In January, our guitar players were lucky to have the professional musician, Adam Khan, lead them in a workshop and masterclass as part of our partnership with the Lenthall Concert Series. They then went on to perform with him and the violinist Michael Bochmann in a concert in the evening where their beautiful playing was received enthusiastically by the audience.

Later that month, our A-level musicians were treated to a workshop by Peter Stark, Professor of Conducting at the Royal College of Music. After learning the basics, the six students put their new found skills to the test by conducting the Symphonic Wind Band in an open rehearsal. Peter commented on the professionalism of the students, who all thoroughly enjoyed the event, one adding that it was one of the best things they had ever done.

That evening a group of students went to a screening of La Boheme, streamed live to Cineworld from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The staging and musicianship was astounding and the students enjoyed gaining an insight into the drama and atmosphere of a live performance but at a local venue!

The month ended with the culmination of the composition course, Create, Compose, Learn! that was run in association with Dr John Traill of St Anne’s College, Oxford. This course, which took place over 1 sessions, saw the students’ final compositions performed by the St Anne’s Camerata to an audience of family, friends and university students in the Mary Ogilvie Lecture Theatre in Oxford.

Dr Traill has also been running a composition course with some of our Key Stage 3 musicians, and will use their work as the basis of a new piece that he has been commissioned to write for and which we hope to perform later in the year.

Our Rock School musicians put on a great evening of music at Fat Lil’s in Witney in March, with one of the bands from across all year groups performing to a full house. The Sixth Form band, Inner Edge, went on later that week to perform in Battle of The Bands in High Wycombe, coming runners up overall in a hotly contested competition run by Buckinghamshire Music Trust. Well done to Inner Edge, who are building up quite a fan base now!

Rehearsals started in earnest in January for our choral concert featuring a choir made up of students, parents, staff and members of the local community. Their hard work culminated in a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Zadok the Priest in Burford Church, accompanied by an orchestra made up of local musicians. This fabulous event was enjoyed by an audience of family and friends who commented what an uplifting and inspiring concert it was.

April 2020 Girls’ Sport

It has been a busy term full of netball for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 girls. Each week at training Miss Barrie and Mrs Stevens have had over 90 girls attending! Netball fixtures for U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U19 have been played against a number of schools such as Bartholomew, Chipping Norton, Woodgreen, Marlborough and Henry Box.

Our U12 and U13 teams have shown a fantastic commitment to training; in fact, attendance to netball club has been so high for Year 7 and 8 that Mrs Stevens has put on an extra training session for Year 8 only to try to reduce the numbers to netball club on a Monday! This has given the squads a fantastic opportunity to experience new positions and working with a number of different people on court. During the season the U12s have had some narrow defeats of 5-4 v Marlborough and 5-2 v WGS. The U13s have also put up a strong fight with a narrow defeat of 14-12 v CNS. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances and the school closure, the U12 and U13 District Tournaments were unable to go ahead.

Our U14 girls have had a very successful season with a number of strong wins including a 22-0 win against WGS and 23-5 against Marlborough. They have consistently demonstrated dominance on the court this season and their commitment to training has been exemplary.

The U14 squad came runners up in their District Tournament narrowly losing by 1 goal to Henry Box.

The U15 squad have also showed a strong commitment to training each week and have used this as an opportunity to experience playing in different positions. There have been a number of new players who have joined the squad this term which has helped improve their overall performance, allowing them to use substitutes when running out of steam. The girls have shown significant progress from the start of the season to the end; this was reflected in their final match against Henry Box with a 32-7 win! The U15 squad finished the season coming third in their District Tournament; a huge achievement.

Our U16 and U19 Senior Squads have also been working hard alongside Mrs Speakman. They have demonstrated excellent resilience in a number of their games, fighting all the way until the final whistle. Results for our seniors include a very narrow loss of 13-11 v Bartholomew, a 22-19 win v CNS and a 22-13 win v Henry Box. https://tinyurl.com/oylasss https://twitter.com/BurfordSchool www.burford.oxon.sch.uk

April 2020 Boys’ Sport

The boys have enjoyed successful season in the district competitions. In addition to the district events, teams have competed in the county competition. The district event sees us play against our West Oxfordshire neighbours. Despite the poor weather and then the enforced stopping of fixtures we have managed to play everyone other than . Year 8 won the County Cup in a final played at Oxford City against . A fantastic event well supported by parents. The Year 9 boys football team overcame a very difficult game against before facing John Mason in the quarter finals. Another fine game played by Burford but despite a late rally John Mason won and progress to the semi finals.

Year 7 A huge number of students turned up to training throughout the season with many being selected to represent the school at some point. A strong spine existed throughout the season with a number of other players joining them at various points. Oli Lavington impressed scoring lots of goals and he was well supported by Elias Easterbrook in midfield and Ben Agar in defence. We were disappointed that some “B” team fixtures were cancelled stopping more participation.

Year 7 West Oxfordshire Rugby Tournament Burford School hosted the annual rugby tournament with schools from West Oxford and beyond. The tournament was held at Burford School and despite the freezing temperatures the team, captained by Orlando, went through unbeaten and without conceding a try, with AJ and Joe B being the standout performers. The squad retained the West Oxfordshire title once again. Results: v Carterton – 10-0, v Henry Box – 5-0, v Woodgreen – 15-0, v Marlborough – 25-0, v CNS – 10-0

Year 8 Another highly successful season for the Year 8 team, seeing them win the County Cup and being victorious in 7 of 8 district league games played during the season, scoring a whopping 43 goals in the process. This would not be possible however without the sheer determination to become better, positive attitude shown by all boys and during the season with approximately 32 different students playing for the team. Oliver Edmunds and Josh Selita showed magnificent leadership throughout and Matthew Ajayi coming out with the top scorer award. Every player could be mentioned as each of them gave their all during every game and showed true progress.

Year 9 Year 9 Boys Football have had an extremely successful year, reaching the quarter final of the County Cup and finishing unbeaten in all other games. They were brilliantly led by captain Freddie Rix and well supported by a strong group of core players, along with various other players stepping in when the team needed. Some stand out moments include Edgar Easterbrook's wonder goal against Wood Green, Freddie Rix's hatrick against Henry Box and George Bielby’s acrobatics in goal in every game we played! A fantastic team effort this year from all of the Year 9 footballers.

Year 10 The Year 10 Football team started the season slowly with closely fought defeats against Bartholomew and Chipping Norton school. These early setbacks did not deter the boys and the whole team trained hard when matches in the middle of the season were postponed, in preparation for their return to action. Once back up and running, the team produced excellent wins against Henry Box and The Marlborough School – on consecutive days. Goals were shared amongst the team, including Cairo Cuss, Toby Hickman, Oliver Traynor and Dylan Briggs, which helped see the team to each victory.

Despite the early end to the season, Mr Claydon was delighted to see over 20 boys represent the team over the matches played. Special mention to Matty Webster and Rhys Jones for leading the team so well.

April 2020 1st XI

The 1st team squad have shown excellent commitment despite a tough season. A consistently high number of students have turned up to training every Monday and developed as individuals and as a team. The team has had a high percentage of Year 11 students who have competed against older students and this will equip Burford students well in future years. All students should be proud of their character and resilience. The senior students (1st and 2nd XI) finished their season with an away trip to Magdalen College, Oxford.

West Oxfordshire District Swimming

A group of students ranging from Year 7 to Year 11 competed well at Chipping Norton Leisure Centre in the annual District Swimming Gala. Some students were taking part in their first swimming gala and we were incredibly proud of their determination. Success at this event results in qualification for the county schools games finals. The following teams qualified for this event which will hopefully be rescheduled:

U16 boys = 1st place U16 girls = 1st place U12 girls = 2nd place U14 girls = 2nd place

West Oxfordshire Indoor Athletics

The District Indoor Athletics was hosted at Marlborough School. The Year 7 and 8 teams from all schools made this a noisy afternoon but there were some excellent competitions. Again success at this event leads to the county competition and we look forward to taking the Year 7 boys team and the Year 8 boys’ team to compete against the best in the county.

Both teams competed well with the more experienced Year 8 team dominating this round. We are hopeful following their successes that the students are trying to access athletics at their local clubs.

April 2020 The Boarders’ Term Despite the closure of the school at the end of March we have had a fun and action-packed term since returning in January. The usual evening activities have taken place and students have also been out to Freedog in Swindon, Aquasplash in Witney and shopping in Cheltenham. In addition they have had a lot of fun making videos on Tik Tok.

In January, we celebrated Chinese New Year with the catering staff providing a huge range of delicious dishes. Work on the Sixth Form common room was finished and has been well used to date. Early February saw our final Open Day of the year for prospective students and parents and the prefects were excellent at providing house tours, pointing out all the different areas of the houses and generally answering a whole range of question on life in boarding.

During the second half of term we were invited to School in Oxford to take part in a school quiz with a range of other boarding schools. The quiz, for Years 10 and 11, was well attended with around twenty Burford boarders taking part. Students were all put into mixed teams on arrival, giving them the opportunity to get to know boarders from other local schools. At the end of a very enjoyable evening two of our students, Katherine and Xavier, triumphed as part of the winning team.

Fundraising continued this term for Medical Detection Dogs, this year’s house charity. On Saturday 7 March a group of boarders based themselves at the Co-op in Burford and collected a whopping £193.00. Other efforts have seen them collect donations for activities and lifts to school with a running total of £170.00, and carol singing in Witney before Christmas which raised £184.40. This puts them on 547.40 to date!

Towards the end of term we held a Teachers’ Tea for which the boarders invited one of the day school staff for afternoon tea and a quiz. Competition was fierce and everyone had lots of fun. The borders would like to thank all those teachers who turned up and made the event such a success.

The last weekend before school closed the boarders spent a very exciting Sunday afternoon exploring the world of virtual reality! Thanks go to Mr Kenny who provided the headsets.

AprilMay 20142020 4 Business Breakfast & Young Enterprise – March 2020

On behalf of the Governors and staff, Mr Derek Grimsley Chair of Governors, welcomed representatives from the business community to a delicious breakfast followed by a presentation from the Young Enterprise and Tenner Challenge teams. It was especially encouraging to welcome so many new faces.

The spring breakfast is an opportunity for our Young Enterprise and Tenner Challenge teams to showcase their products and practice their public speaking skills in front of an experienced audience. The students made a fantastic first impression with their enthusiasm and professionalism.

The presentations showed how they developed their business model with environmental impact at the forefront, while documenting some of the challenges and successes they have experienced so far. This was followed by questions from the audience and a chance for attendees to purchase the products. Our students were thrilled to be able to market their products to a new audience.

These valuable business links allow the school to work alongside local and international businesses, to enrich the students’ education and understand the skills required to leave school equipped for life in the workplace. If you would like to attend any of our forthcoming business breakfasts, please contact the Company Secretary, Mrs Suzanne Reeve at [email protected].

Fabulous Quiz & Curry Night
