In the last week of term in July before everyone left for the summer holidays, Key Stage 3 students participated in three days of Enrichment. There was a real buzz about the school, with a wide variety of events occurring. Each year group had a dedicated day together and the other two days were taken up by all sorts of weird and wonderful experiences.

OXFORD TALK

Thinking of applying to Oxbridge? We were very lucky this term to have Daniel Powell, a former geography teacher at The Henry Box School, come to talk to us about applying to Oxbridge. Dan is now the Access and Administrations Officer for New College in Oxford and spoke to over forty of our Year 10 and Year 11 students.

Initially Dan asked our students to list the characteristics of a Henry Box student and an Oxford University student. We soon realised that the characteristics were the same: hard working, ambitious, proud…… Dan then described how his geography teacher at a comprehensive school New College. It showcases current undergraduate in Wales encouraged him to apply to Oxford, students at New College alongside a caption in something he never thought he was ‘clever’ enough which they describe their honest and candid to do. Daniela Cazan has completed her first challenge which was ‘Read a book banned in another country with a Social Sciences theme’. Here is her review of the book:

‘This incredible book is about a brave and sensational female called Malala Yousafzai who was born in 1997 in Pakistan. Malala valued education from a very young age, she was always at the top of the class and competing against her best friend and rival. Later on in her life, Malala’s home town Swat Valley, changed after 9/11 attacks had occurred. The Taliban gained power in the region and implemented strict rules being; CDs, DVDs and TVs were not allowed in the house and females were not allowed to be educated. For Malala, this was unacceptable. Therefore, Malala and her father began to publicly speak out against the Taliban and their rules. Malala even began to write a diary about a girl being under the Taliban.

A few years later, Malala and her family returned Nowadays, Malala is known to speak out on a larger to Swat Valley, as the army announced the Taliban platform for girls’ education, female rights, equality were driven out of the valley. YEAR 9 GERMAN RESIDENTIAL - BOPPARD 2017

In Enrichment Week in July a brand new languages trip departed for Germany for four days. Forty students and four staff members left The Henry Box School on Monday morning at 1.30 am and made their way down to the coast on their way to Boppard in Germany.

Boppard is situated in the northwest of Germany, not far from Cologne. We stayed in a wonderful hotel called Das Bergschlösschen (“The Little Castle”), which was tucked away in the mountains amazed at how busy the town is in the evening for of the Rhine Valley. tourists.

On the first evening we took a walk down to the On Wednesday we were back on the coach again, as River Rhine and enjoyed a group quiz before we headed towards the theme park Phantasialand. heading back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep. The bus drivers took us on a scenic tour of the On Tuesday we took a walk into Boppard along the river Rhine and told us all about the history of river and split into groups to do a town treasure the castles and forts that are scattered along the hunt. Students had to find answers to a range of mountainsides. We had a fun day at Phantasialand clues using their knowledge of German language until the heavens opened but that didn’t deter us and culture and by talking to the locals. In the from having fun, instead the whole group got on afternoon we took a chairlift to the top of the the carousel (the teachers too!). mountain overlooking Boppard and took some time to appreciate the stunning views over the river and Our final day was spent travelling back to the towns below. YEAR 8 FRENCH RESIDENTIAL - BOULOGNE 2017

At the end of the summer term, the MFL Department took 60 Year 8 students to Boulogne on France’s Opal Coast for 4 days. We managed to arrive at Dover at exactly the right moment to drive straight on to the ferry and depart – France was in sight already! One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to our twin town, Le Touquet, where we had a competition to find and photograph a list of French places. We were so impressed by the students’ efforts and confidence in speaking French, some even managed to get invited into the town hall! The students bought lunch in Le Touquet, using their French to understand café menus and order their food. A few were even brave enough to try frogs’ legs! We also went to Nausicaa, the National Sealife Centre in Boulogne, where we saw penguins, sharks and sea lions. The students really enjoyed our Bagatelle theme park experience and we had some fun visits to the local beach for an after-dinner run around and a lot of digging in the sand! Our students were a real pleasure to take to France; they were a credit to the school and made a real effort to try out their language skills.

C’était fantastique!

LESSER SPOTTED

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Lesser Spotted Sciences event at the Mathematical Institute on the 5th October 2017. The event was hosted by the : Computer Sciences department and involved Year 11 students from across the country from to the West Country and North of England. It was an excellent opportunity to see the application of science in a variety of different settings. During the day there were six talks, each student could choose to attend three. Each talk was about a science that is not taught in schools, but is available to study at Oxford University. Applied mathematics in the architecture of the The event was hosted in the Andrew Wilkes building building in OU. A fantastic building which was once part of the Radcliffe Infirmary. The day started with a general introduction before quickly launching into thought provoking series of talks and interactive discussions. At 10:00 my first talk took place, Computer Science. The lecturer was very enthusiastic about his field and about the applications of Computer Science. The thirty-five minute talk was started with a simple multiplication question. Instead of merely running it through a calculator, he showed us how computers multiply numbers. There followed a further series of discussions and lectures including earth sciences (the study of the natural environment), Biomedical

sciences (Genomic engineering) and finished with several students describing their particular pathway to Oxford and what a ‘day in the life of a student’ The floor patterns on the outside of the building was like. All in all it was an excellent opportunity to see science in action in one of the world’s greatest universities.

The day included a tour of Wadham College. The heritage of the college was evident throughout. Its alumni included the founders of the royal society and little seems to have changed in the hundreds of years since they attended. The flagstones and polished thresholds of the doors have remained since the college was founded.

It’s an inspiring place, and was a great opportunity to see. I would recommend this to anyone. Some photos of the day; Chapel in Wadham College
