30 March 2021 Dear Parent/Carer Re: Parentmail Twenty-Four Exams and Assessment Update – Mr Pullin On Friday 26 March further guidance was issued by the JCQ to schools and colleges relating to the awarding of Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGa) this summer. Nothing significant has changed, but it has provided us with more details regarding the process. Once we have had time to fully process the information and adapt it to our context I will write to all parents of students involved in the process. A student and parent summary has been produced by the JCQ and is available below: Guidance for students, parents and guardians: GCSEs and AS/A Levels in England Reading Week 22- 26 March 2019 – Mrs Cooper Our virtual Reading Week got off to a great start with our Patrons of Reading launching the event to all classes; Martin Stewart to Years 10 -13 and Ian Johnstone to Years 7 – 9. They enthused about reading, recommended reads to the students and talked about their own titles. We look forward to welcoming them back into school in person when it is safe to do so. Author Sarah Oliver, also recorded some talks for our Year 7s and 8s about the process of publishing and writing biographies, which generated a lot of interest and discussion. The students were asked to research someone who interested them and write mini biographies based on the information they had discovered. Jo Cotterill joined us, courtesy of Teams, on Thursday 25 March, which was our virtual World Book Day. She was her usual bubbly and inspirational self and we managed to get some of her books to sell. Knowing about Jo’s artistic talents I asked her to design a book plate and sign it, so that students could stick them in books which they had bought. If your child hasn’t yet seen Jo, and quite a few classes have now, her talks were recorded for all Year 7-9 classes, so they will have the opportunity very soon. We managed to contact the new owner of The Madhatter Bookshop. She kindly put together a selection of books for a Reading Week Booksale for Years 7, 8 and 9 on Monday – Wednesday lunchtimes. We also had a few World Book Day books which the children could exchange for their World Book Day vouchers. Any unspent vouchers can still be exchanged in Sainsbury’s and WH Smiths, while stocks last. We will be judging the Bookmark and Anagram quiz competitions this week, but there is still time to take part in the Environment Essay competition and for Years 10s and 12s, the Poetry competition. With this in mind we have suspended our usual uniform checks, however we have seen an increase in stretchy jersey skirts and also trainer style black shoes with logos, which are not permitted. After the Easter break we would ask that all students return to the usual standard of uniform and we will resume our high expectations. Form tutors will contact parents if they have any concerns. Our full uniform policy can be seen on our website or by following this link: https://www.burford.oxon.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/School-Uniform-2020-2021.pdf Our uniform is available from many high street stores plus Wreal Sports at the website below: https://wrealsports.co.uk/shop/my-school/burford/ Should you require financial assistance please contact me directly: [email protected] Sixth Form Dress Code Reminder – Ms Denny As we get back into the routine of school life, one of the areas of transition is the return to wearing more formal clothing. In the Sixth Form we have a dress code that recognises that our students are role models for the rest of the school and should present themselves in a way that displays a dignified and respectful attitude. Like all of us, during the lockdown students have become used to dressing more informally, and so below is a reminder of our Sixth Form Dress Code to help you ensure that students come to school in the correct attire. Sixth Form students may only wear: Formal shoes (no trainers, pumps, vans or plimsolls) Smart trousers, smart jeans or smart skirt (to the knee) Burford School, a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales under number 8082185. Registered office: Burford School, Cheltenham Road, Oxfordshire OX18 4PL Collared shirt (including smart plain polo shirt) or smart top Smart dress (to the knee) Jumper/plain sweatshirt (must be worn with a collared shirt/smart top underneath) For clarity the following items should not be worn: T-shirts and hoodies (except Year 13 Leavers’ hoodies) Clothing with slogans, pictures or large logos Clothing that is overly revealing Please note: Piercings are limited to ears only (no facial piercings) Hair should be of a natural colour Lanyards must be worn at all times whilst students are on the school COVID-19 Update Face coverings - Mr Jouny Following a very successful term with staff and students adapting very quickly to our COVID-19 control measures in and around school, we will continue with all measures in place into Term 5. This will include the wearing of face coverings in all inside locations at school, with students and staff continuing to wear face coverings in classrooms also. Students have been very skilled in their handling of their face coverings and I would strongly encourage them to have a spare in school, in case theirs become wet or damaged. Registered office: Burford School, Cheltenham Road, Oxfordshire OX18 4PL COVID Home testing - Mrs Evans Students are strongly encouraged to continue twice-weekly Covid testing throughout the Easter holidays, to manage the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) as part of a regular habit of testing at home every 3-4 days.
