We have reassessed our situation and feel comfortable being open again on Thursdays. The Vigil Light Burning This Week Is In Memory of Therefore, Monday, through Friday we will be opened from 9am to 5pm. Jillian Grace Giardullo Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The story of Job seems at first hearing to be an extension of February’s gloom into the liturgy. The monumental suffering of a good man is so horrific that the laments of the front page of modern newspapers barely measure up. The whole story is not long to tell, but its resolution is of great comfort. We can trace in its plot the stirrings of a belief in an afterlife, and in God’s great power to right every wrong and raise human beings from suffering.

In the Gospel, we see the fulfillment of these longings in the hand of , grasping an ill woman by the hand and raising her up to vibrant life. Peter’s mother-in-law becomes her best self, attentive to her guests, providing hospitality, the warmth of her laughter, the delights of her kitchen. Last week, at Candlemas, candles were blessed, including baptismal candles for some not yet born. Today is a day to check the fragile flame of your own baptismal candle. Against February’s customary lethargy, its background whines and ailments, the liturgy summons us to life, grasps us by the hand, and sends us to serve in Christ’s name.

OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS THIS WEEKEND

The Book of Job Chap 7, Verses 1-4, 6-7 Job finds life on earth to be drudgery; he is filled with restlessness

The first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians Chap 9, Verse 16-19, 22-23 Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel. I have become all things to all, to save at least some.

The Gospel of Mark Chap 1, Verses 29-39 Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases.

From the Desk of the Pastor

Father Salvatore DeStefano

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It’s hard to believe that in just 10 days, Ash Wednesday will be here. I’m praying that this is going to be a good Lent, one that can bring us closer to Jesus and Mary.

May I offer a few suggestions for making this Lent special.

1. Start planning now what you want to give up for the 40 days. It should be something small and doable, but something you like. 2. Go to Confession. What a great way to kick off Lent! You’ll get special graces from God to live as he wants you to. 3. Consider, if you can, attending Mass during the week. Daily Mass goers will tell you how much strength they derive from receiving the Eucharist during the week as well as on Sunday. 4. Make a solid commitment to treat people, especially our families, with extra kindness. That will go a long way towards making Lent special for the people around us. 5. Forgive. If someone has hurt you this is the time to settle it in your heart and with God. Sometimes we hurt others—but sometimes we are the ones who are wounded. The best action to take is to let go of the hurt and forgive. This is especially meaningful to Jesus and also heals us.

This lent has to be better than last year. If you recall, not long after Ash Wednesday everything was shut down because of the virus. The fact that we now have Mass open to the public is something I’m extremely grateful for.

God bless you,

Please keep in your prayers Father Kevin O’Reilly, who died suddenly last week. Father O’Reilly was a Professor of Dogma at St. Joseph Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was only 51 years old. He taught

both Father Sal and Father Kwan—he was an excellent priest.

SAINTS WE CELEBRATE THIS WEEK

REST IN PEACE SAINT SCHOLASTICA Eternal Peace Grant Unto Them, February 10th O Lord Saint Scholastic was born c.480 in Nursia, Umbria to wealthy parents. She was Gary Frank Belviso Benedict’s sister and many believe she was his twin. The most commonly told story Joseph Cardile about her is that Scholastica would, once a Giuseppe Cartella year, go and visit her brother at a place Angeles & Antonio Cintron near his abbey, and they would spend the Mary & Cesidio Cugini day worshiping together and discussing Maryann Cugini & Monica Erdman sacred texts and issues. One day they had Gaetano & Amilia D’Arco supper and continued their conversation. When Benedict indicated it was time for him to leave, Scholastica, Ronald Darminio perhaps sensing that the time of her death was drawing near, asked Rose & Paul DeFonzo him to stay with her for the evening so they could continue their Dellamonica Family discussions. Not wishing to break his own rule, Benedict refused, Gennaro & Elizabeth DiPalma Insisting that he needed to return to his cell. At that point, Scholastica Robert & Margaret Engel closed her hands in prayer, and after a moment, a wild storm started Joseph, Ines & Falcone & outside of the guest house in which they were staying. Benedict Rachel Panza asked, "What have you done?", to which she replied, "I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen. So Furgiuele Family now go off, if you can; leave me and return to your monastery." Joseph, Gloria & Thomas Galasso Benedict was unable to return to his monastery, and they spent the Carlo & Marco Gardini night in discussion. Three days later, from his cell, he saw his sister's Robert & Elizabeth Haughney soul leaving the earth and ascending to heaven in the form of a Anthony Leone shining white dove. Benedict had her body brought to his monastery, Palladino Family where he had it laid in the tomb which he had prepared for himself. Saint Scholastica is the of Benedictine , education Guiditta & Enazio Mazzella and convulsive children. She is invoked against storms and rain. Similar apparitions Fr. Robert Aufieri of the “Lady” were reported on eighteen occasions that year, until Fr. Frank Bassett the climax revelation of Our Lady of the took Msgr. Francis Cagnina, P.A. place. On January 18, 1862, the local Bishop of Tarbes Fr. Anthony D’Antonio Bertrand-Sévère Laurence endorsed the veneration of the Blessed Fr. Leonard DiFalco Virgin Mary in Lourdes. On July 3, 1876, Pius IX officially granted a Canonical Coronation to the image that used to be in the Fr. George Giammarino courtyard of what is now part of the Rosary Basilica. The image of Fr. Richard Gorman Our Lady of Lourdes has been widely copied and reproduced in Fr. Robert Macchietto and homes, often in garden landscapes. Soubirous was later Msgr. Louis Mazza canonized as a Catholic saint by Pope Pius XI in 1933. A large cult Deacon James Oakes devotion has since developed as ecclesiastical investigations Msgr. Joseph Raimondo sanctioned her visions, and a large church was built at the site that has since become a major site of Marian pilgrimage.
