  • St. Clare of Assisi Clare Was Born in Assisi, Italy, in 1193 to Wealthy Parents, and Was Taught to Read and Write As Well As Spin Yarn and Do Needlework
    St. Clare of Assisi Clare was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1193 to wealthy parents, and was taught to read and write as well as spin yarn and do needlework. She had little interest in her luxurious surroundings (she lived in a palace), and influenced by her mother's religious devotion, Clare dedicated her life to God at an early age. She also showed early on that her calling would involve helping the poor, as she set aside food from her family table to give to the needy on the streets. When Clare was 18, Francis of Assisi came to preach in the church of San Giorgio at Assisi. Inspired by his words, Clare asked Francis to help her in dedicating her life to God, and he vowed to do so. The following year (1211), Clare's parents chose a wealthy young man for Clare to marry, but she pointedly refused, fleeing soon after for the Porziuncola Chapel, where Francis received her. She took vows dedicating her life to God, and that moment, occurring on March 20, 1212, marked the beginning of the Second Order of St. Francis. Clare's sister Agnes soon joined her, and they moved to the Church of San Damiano, recently rebuilt by Francis. It wasn't long before other women joined them, and San Damiano's residents, known for their ascetic lifestyle, became known as the "Poor Ladies." Known as the Order of San Damiano, 10 years after Clare's death the order would be renamed the Order of Saint Clare. Clare became the abbess of San Damiano in 1216, and, while spending her days doing manual labor and praying, she began dedicating much of her time to changing the governing rule (established by the Pope) of the order from the Benedictine spirit to one of the newly established Franciscan rule.

This is seen clearly in the stark contrast between the affluent Western World and the Developing World. The scriptures today focus on such contrasts. Today in the Gospel we read St. Luke’s formulation of the Beatitudes. St. Luke’s vision recounts the concern Jesus had for the poor and the marginalized. The Lucan Jesus speaks of those who are the real poor, hungry, and the sorrowful - and contrasts them with the rich, the well fed, and the merrymakers. The poor are favored by God, while the rich face a bleak future if they do not amend their ways. In the reading from the Hebrew Scriptures, the Prophet Jeremiah uses imagery from nature to make the same contrast about the human condition. The tree in verdant splendor is close to the river with an ample supply of water. The bush, on the other hand, is planted in a wasted and arid desert with no sustenance to assure growth. This is given as a metaphor for human choices, with some placing their whole trust in God, and others in human pursuits.

    Studying the Life of Saint Clare of Assisi A Beginner’s Workbook By William R. Hugo, OFM Cap. & Joanne Schatzlein, OSF William Hugo belongs to the Midwest Capuchin Province of St. Joseph (USA). He holds an M.A. degree in Franciscan Studies from the Franciscan Institute (1983) at St. Bonaventure University. He ministered in initial formation and vocation promotion for thirty-eight years, while teaching the life and writings of Francis of Assisi. Hugo currently directs his province’s International Collaboration Office and ministers in the Father Solanus Casey Center in Detroit. Joanne Schatzlein is a member of The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in Milwaukee and holds an M.A. degree in Franciscan Studies from the Franciscan Institute (1984) at St. Bonaventure University. She ministered as a registered nurse and served in congrega- tional leadership.     Clare of Assisi: Foot-Washing Leadership Sister Madge Karecki (ssj-tosf) [email protected] Introduction In recent years, there has been a proliferation of books published about leadership styles. We have seen the meteoric rise in popularity of Stephen Covey‟s The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and now his Principle-Centered Leadership is fast becoming a best-seller. John C. Maxwell offers readers basic insights into various issues surrounding leadership in his Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know; while Rudolph W. Giuliani utilized his experience of being mayor of New York and produced his memoir-like volume, Leadership. These publications and many others on the development of leadership styles are indicative of a search for more collaborative and participative models of leadership. I think intuitively we know something is just not right. The model of the ruthless, capitalist CEO, the lone ranger at the top of the heap is a model that is being called into question by more than a few thinking people. Yet even the best of these volumes focus on skills and techniques without giving attention to the transformation of the one who is in leadership. Are leadership abilities inborn? Is leadership just a matter of learning a few techniques? Is the bottom line of every leadership style simply getting a job done? From a Christian perspective, good leadership requires more than techniques or skills. Christian leadership calls for something much deeper and much more challenging. It is for this deeper perspective that we turn to the medieval woman, Clare of Assisi.

The city which forgets how to care for the stranger has forgotten how to care for itself. --The Odyssey Introduction There have been several books on Christian hospitality in the last couple of years. Christine Pohl, Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition (Eerdmans, 1999) studied the topic from many angles, concentrating especially on communities which specialize in hospitality. Lucien Richard, Living the Hospitality of God (Paulist, 2000) covered some of the same ground, with a special emphasis on welcoming refugees. Brendan Byrne, The Hospitality of God: A Reading of Luke's Gospel (Liturgical Press, 2000) interpreted the Gospel of Luke from the standpoint of hospitality. Hospitality looms large in the Rule and history of Benedictines. Someone trying to convince a person to join the third order of another religious congregation emphasized to a friend of mine the nobility of that order's charism, saying that Benedictines' charism was homely hospitality. This recruiter underestimated how important hosptiality is. One of the big challenges we face is how to adapt the Christian tradition of hospitality to the realities of contemporary life, where we have a "hospitality industry," and "hospitality" is usually thought of as something one offers to friends or at least friends of friends--people very much like ourselves.     A TIME LINE ST. FRANCIS AND ST. CLARE OF ASSISI 1182 Born in 1182 to Pica and Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi, Italy. Pietro was a wealthy cloth merchant and Pica was from a wealthy French family. 1193 or 1194 Clare (Chiara) di Favarone of the Offreducio family is born in Assisi. Clare’s parents are of the wealthy class. Clare’s mother’ name was Ortulana and her father’s name was Favarone. 1199-1200 Francis “participates in the struggle between the maiores and minores of the city.” 1202 Francis joins the army and was taken prisoner following his involvement in the war against Perugia. Francis spent several months as a POW. Francis becomes very sick in prison with an unknown illness. 1205 Francis leaves Assisi to join the military campaign of the famous knight, Walter of Brienne. However, as he is on his way with the other young men, He hears a voice asking, “Is it better to serve the lord or the servant?” Francis turns around and returns to Assisi. 1205 Clare’s family returns to Assisi. Caught in the difficulties of the time resulting from the rise of the merchant class in Assisi, Clare’s family fled to Perugia when she was still a child, and returned to Assisi in 1205, when she was about twelve years old. That was the same year in which Francis of Assisi renounced his father and received official recognition of his life as a penitent. 1205 Francis experiences the invitation of Jesus on the San Damiano crucifix to “Rebuild his church.” 1206 Francis has a significant conversion experience by embracing a leper.
