St. Francis isn’t a Franciscan, he is Francis. St. Clare embodies his spirituality with a disnct power and fidelity. While Francis was the son of a Merchant (a ridiculously wealthy one), Clare was of noble lineage on both her mother’s and father’s side. Some historians have speculated her connecons were important in Francis geng access to the Bishop of Assisi and maybe even later on the Pope. Her family, parcularly her mother, were pious people. They also gave Clare room to develop her own mind. She was allowed to turn down a marriage match at age 15 and had kept herself unspoken for unl she was 17. She hears Francis preach about the Gospel and the radical trust in God which was to be his regular message. She arranges to give him a sign on Palm Sunday that she will meet him that night to start a new life. Leaves Assisi through the “Door of the Dead” and meets the brothers. She changes her fine clothes for a course pilgrim habit and a rope belt. She cuts her hair as a sign of leaving the world behind. His father and her uncles catch wind of the escape and storm to the lile chapel of the Porcuncula and start to drag her off. Her veil falls off and they see her shaved head, they retreat confused. Later two of Clare’s sisters, an aunt and her very mother join her in the community of Poor Women of Assisi. Francis gave Clare a ruleR very simpleR they will be dedicated to prayer, they will live simply, they will be cloistered, they will keep mes of silence, they will own nothing at all. They will bring no doweries to help support the convent. They will own no buildingsR the Benedicnes let them use San Damiano, other buildings belonging to the Pope. They will be dependent day to day of what people bring to their door or what the friars get for them. Bishops and Popes won’t approve the rule. They ask Clare to so en it. One of the Popes tells Clare that he could “absolve her of the demand for complete poverty”. She responds, “I need absoluon for my sins, I don’t need absoluon from living the Gospel”. As a FranciscanR the greatest Franciscan Clare knew that the Good News of the Gospel was that God would not let us down. We could not take too big of a risk in believing that he would provide. Two days before she died the Pope sent Clare a leer confirming the Rule that Francis had given her. St. Clare reminds us of the beauty and risk of the Gospel. She was cloistered and others could be trusted to bring she and her sisters what they needed. We can trust God that he will provide in our lives. Others might have to help more; we might have to adjust our desires and ambions according to God’s desire and plans. God will make himself manifest to us all. We have a special prayer service on Tuesday August 10th at 7pm in honor of St Clare. Come be renewed by the Franciscan spirit. Feast of St. Clare Wednesday, August 11, is the Feast of St. Clare. With St. Francis, she founded a contem- ST PIUS GOLF OUTING plative order of nuns that has played a major role Thursday, September 30 in the life of the Franciscan Order until this very Portland Golf Club day. • St. Clare of Assisi Clare Was Born in Assisi, Italy, in 1193 to Wealthy Parents, and Was Taught to Read and Write As Well As Spin Yarn and Do Needlework
St. Clare of Assisi Clare was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1193 to wealthy parents, and was taught to read and write as well as spin yarn and do needlework. She had little interest in her luxurious surroundings (she lived in a palace), and influenced by her mother's religious devotion, Clare dedicated her life to God at an early age. She also showed early on that her calling would involve helping the poor, as she set aside food from her family table to give to the needy on the streets. When Clare was 18, Francis of Assisi came to preach in the church of San Giorgio at Assisi. Inspired by his words, Clare asked Francis to help her in dedicating her life to God, and he vowed to do so. The following year (1211), Clare's parents chose a wealthy young man for Clare to marry, but she pointedly refused, fleeing soon after for the Porziuncola Chapel, where Francis received her. She took vows dedicating her life to God, and that moment, occurring on March 20, 1212, marked the beginning of the Second Order of St. Francis. Clare's sister Agnes soon joined her, and they moved to the Church of San Damiano, recently rebuilt by Francis. It wasn't long before other women joined them, and San Damiano's residents, known for their ascetic lifestyle, became known as the "Poor Ladies." Known as the Order of San Damiano, 10 years after Clare's death the order would be renamed the Order of Saint Clare. Clare became the abbess of San Damiano in 1216, and, while spending her days doing manual labor and praying, she began dedicating much of her time to changing the governing rule (established by the Pope) of the order from the Benedictine spirit to one of the newly established Franciscan rule.

Phillips Ave., Milwaukee WI 53212 414.803.4449; [email protected] sjpcommunications.org 22 May 2019 Issue 1156 World Environment Day The United Nations, aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world, designated 5 June as World Environment Day. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in more than 100 countries. World Environment Day 2019 will be hosted by China, with a theme of "Air Pollution." We can't stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of air that we breathe. Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific. World Environment Day 2019 will urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world. Studying the Life of St. Clare of Assisi This one-of-a-kind resource helps readers discover St. Clare through a series of crisp chapters that first teach them about the sources for Clare’s life and writings and then apply that knowledge to manageable topics from her life.

  • Franciscans for Justice.” Each Class with Additional Materials Sent by Email After Each Class …
CherishingNurturing ourour FranciscanFranciscan TraditionTradition St. Francis of Assisi Parish February 17, 2019 The Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time SERMON on the plain Jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem ... image found online, attributed to Gustave Dore (public domain) From the Pastor’s Desk The world today, as much as any time in history, is divided into people who can be described as the “haves” and the “have-nots”. This is seen clearly in the stark contrast between the affluent Western World and the Developing World. The scriptures today focus on such contrasts. Today in the Gospel we read St. Luke’s formulation of the Beatitudes. St. Luke’s vision recounts the concern Jesus had for the poor and the marginalized. The Lucan Jesus speaks of those who are the real poor, hungry, and the sorrowful - and contrasts them with the rich, the well fed, and the merrymakers. The poor are favored by God, while the rich face a bleak future if they do not amend their ways. In the reading from the Hebrew Scriptures, the Prophet Jeremiah uses imagery from nature to make the same contrast about the human condition. The tree in verdant splendor is close to the river with an ample supply of water. The bush, on the other hand, is planted in a wasted and arid desert with no sustenance to assure growth. This is given as a metaphor for human choices, with some placing their whole trust in God, and others in human pursuits.

My lived experience of being a woman and being in relationship with society and the church gives me a lens by which I perceive the realities and experiences of others. In this preface I will take you through a very brief history of growing up in the 1900’s, the church’s role in my calling to follow Jesus, and then back step to the 1200’s where Francis and Clare grew up and answered their call to follow Jesus in relationship to the church.

  • Clare of Assisi: Foot-Washing Leadership Sister Madge Karecki (Ssj-Tosf) [email protected]
Clare of Assisi: Foot-Washing Leadership Sister Madge Karecki (ssj-tosf) [email protected] Introduction In recent years, there has been a proliferation of books published about leadership styles. We have seen the meteoric rise in popularity of Stephen Covey‟s The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and now his Principle-Centered Leadership is fast becoming a best-seller. John C. Maxwell offers readers basic insights into various issues surrounding leadership in his Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know; while Rudolph W. Giuliani utilized his experience of being mayor of New York and produced his memoir-like volume, Leadership. These publications and many others on the development of leadership styles are indicative of a search for more collaborative and participative models of leadership. I think intuitively we know something is just not right. The model of the ruthless, capitalist CEO, the lone ranger at the top of the heap is a model that is being called into question by more than a few thinking people. Yet even the best of these volumes focus on skills and techniques without giving attention to the transformation of the one who is in leadership. Are leadership abilities inborn? Is leadership just a matter of learning a few techniques? Is the bottom line of every leadership style simply getting a job done? From a Christian perspective, good leadership requires more than techniques or skills. Christian leadership calls for something much deeper and much more challenging. It is for this deeper perspective that we turn to the medieval woman, Clare of Assisi.

  • Hospitality Fr
Hospitality Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB Rudeness to a stranger is not decency, poor though he may be, poorer than you. All wanderers and beggars come from Zeus. What we can give is slight but the recompense great. The city which forgets how to care for the stranger has forgotten how to care for itself. --The Odyssey Introduction There have been several books on Christian hospitality in the last couple of years. Christine Pohl, Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition (Eerdmans, 1999) studied the topic from many angles, concentrating especially on communities which specialize in hospitality. Lucien Richard, Living the Hospitality of God (Paulist, 2000) covered some of the same ground, with a special emphasis on welcoming refugees. Brendan Byrne, The Hospitality of God: A Reading of Luke's Gospel (Liturgical Press, 2000) interpreted the Gospel of Luke from the standpoint of hospitality. Hospitality looms large in the Rule and history of Benedictines. Someone trying to convince a person to join the third order of another religious congregation emphasized to a friend of mine the nobility of that order's charism, saying that Benedictines' charism was homely hospitality. This recruiter underestimated how important hosptiality is. One of the big challenges we face is how to adapt the Christian tradition of hospitality to the realities of contemporary life, where we have a "hospitality industry," and "hospitality" is usually thought of as something one offers to friends or at least friends of friends--people very much like ourselves. Francis and Clare of Assisi and the Benedictines When St. Francis came on the scene in the early 13th century, Benedictine monasticism had been around for seven centuries.
