The Lie About the West. A Response to Professor Toynbee's challenge. By Douglas Jerrold. New York, Sheed and Ward, 1954. pp. 85. $1.75. Will the civilization of Europe and the \.Vestern Hemisphere decline and die like all others of the past, or will it rally and live? Professor Arnold Toynbee, the eminent British historian, proponent of the theory of challenge and response as the key to history, has proposed a possible answer in a recent book, The World and the T~ est. He views the present world crisis as the result of a "response" by the rest of the world (Russia and the Orient) to the "challenge" of continued Western aggression, both military and technological. Draw ing a parallel with the declining Roman Empire, which after numerous aggressions was converted to eastern religions-principally and finally to Christianity, he thinks it probable that the West will be converted to a new religion coming from the Orient. This will not be Commun ism, he adds in a letter to The Times Literary Su.pplement (April 16, 1954), but an entirely new religion which he hopes will retain the Christian belief in God as Love but will discard the notion of a jealous God and a chosen people in favor of a more universal view, borrowed perhaps from Indian Buddhism. Mr. Douglas Jerrold, another English historian, has called this doctrine a lie in his "response to Professor Toynbee "s challenge." It is a lie against fact, against reason, and against faith. It is against fact because the West was not an aggressor but was on the defensive for a thousand years against the Northmen, Magyars, and Turks; because Christianity was not and is not one of many "oriental re ligions" but an historical one which arose within the Roman Empire and was spread by Roman citizens; because Roman civilization was not spread merely by force of arms. -

D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested. -

THEORYFORUM: REGARDING "A PROPOS METER AND RHYTHM IN THE ARS ANTIQUA"' Leo Treitler Hans Tischler very generouslyrates my ideas in the paper2 that he has reviewed as "basically sound," notwithstanding the fault that he finds with the details of my argument.But I fear that he has taken in only one aspect of what I tried to show in that paper, the idea that "metric accent is an essential feature of the music of [the School of Notre Dame]," as he puts it. I did indeed make such a claim (and there is nothing particularlyoriginal in it), but as only part of the description of a total music-historicalsituation that entails aspects of style, nota- tion and transmission,and the explanationsof musical theorists. My aim was to look at the severalinteractive facets of that situation all at once and to try to show something of its significancefor a very large-scale historicalmovement in our tradition. A reply is called for in order to place the historical theme back in the center, not to carry on the dispute over transcriptions.For it is transcriptionsthat are once again at issue in Tischler'sreview.Yes, one should make them as good as one can. But as Tischlerhimself recognizes, the differences over transcriptionshardly affect the view that one takes of the "central issues." Yet these disagreementshave continually ob- scured the view toward any issues beyond themselvesin this subject. The early literary sources of the legend are from the end of the tenth century, Abbo of Fleury's Passio sancti Eadmundi of c. 987, and vElfric's abbreviated version of this in his Old English Lives of Saints sometime later but before the end of the century. The story of the martyrdom tells how a Viking army led by Irlguar demand Edmund's submission and tribute; Edmund refuses, is captured by the Vikings, beaten, tied to a tree and shot at, then finally beheaded. In the dedicatory epistle which precedes the Passio proper, Abbo claims he had been told the story by Archbishop Dunstan who had heard it as a young man at the court of King /Ethelstan from the lips of a very old armour- bearer of Edmund who had actually been present and seen it all happen. Dorothy Whitelock reviewed the sources and concluded that the account of the martyrdom of St Edmund was not entirely implausible. -

Essentially a re-issue, omitting the color plates, of the original edition published in 1946 under the imprint of Doubleday and Company. The illustrations retained are line drawings. There is a section of notes to the text, which, though not actually identified, is the translation by Henry F. Cary. Dante Alighieri. The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. I. Inferno. With translation and comment by John D. Sinclair. New York: Oxford University Press, 1959. This is a paperback edition identical to the hard-cover edition of 1948. The translation, in prose, with the original Italian on opposite pages, is based on the critical text of the Società Dantesca Italiana; “the few departures . from that text are limited to readings adopted either in Moore’s or Casella’s texts.” Each canto is very briefly annotated and followed by a “Note,” or commentary. In a preface, Mr. Sinclair acknowledges his indebtedness to major recent commentaries and studies, from Scartazzini to Croce, from which he has quoted freely. The Investiture Contest and the Rise of Herod Plays in the Twelfth Century John Marlin Since the publication of O. B. Hardison’s Christian Rite and Christian Drama in the Middle Ages,1 E. K. Chambers’s and Karl Young’s evolutionary models for liturgical drama’s development2 have been discarded. Yet the question remains of accounting for what Rosemary Woolf calls its “zig-zag” development,3 its apogee being the twelfth century. The growth and decline of Christmas drama is particularly intriguing, as most of Young’s samples of the simple shepherd plays, the Officium Pastores, come from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while the earliest Christmas play he documents, from an eleventh-century Freising Cathedral manuscript, is a complete play about Herod and the Magi, the Officium Stellae. -

The Light from the East: England’s Lost Patron Saint: St Edmund Foreword FOREWORD Tis a sad fact, illustrative of our long disdain and neglect of St Edmund 1, formerly much revered as the Patron Saint of England, that to this day there exists no Life of Ithe Saint which is readable, reliable and accessible to the modern reader. True, there is the Life written in Ramsey by St Abbo of Fleury over a thousand years ago in c. 985. Written in Latin but translated shortly afterwards into Old English by that most orthodox monk Ælfric, it is based on an eyewitness account. We think it reliable, but it is not accessible and it covers only a short period of the Saint’s life. True, a great many mediæval chroniclers wrote of St Edmund, among them – Hermann of Bury StEdmunds, Symeon of Durham, Geoffrey Gaimar, Geoffrey of Wells, William of Malmesbury, Osbert of Clare, Florence of Worcester, Jocelin of Brakelond, William of Ramsey, Henry of Huntingdon, Ingulf of Crowland, Matthew Paris, Roger of Wendover, Denis Piramus, Richard of Cirencester and John Lydgate.
