Donna’s Dispatch

As many of you know this article is written during the Thanksgiving season in order to print and deliver by Jan- uary. So it is only appropriate I mention how blessed we all are. I understand each of us has our problems and issues but we are so fortunate to have a common link - sewing. Sewing is one of the greatest “hobbies.” Where else can you find such wonderful friends that you have made through sewing? I know I have found the best of everything, friends, something to do in my “spare time,” keeping me out of trouble most of the time, keeping me “up to date,” had to learn to use the computer and emails, allowing me do something I love to do, keeping my mind fresh, thinking and never getting bored. And, OH, something to do if you can’t sleep at night. Isn’t sewing the greatest?

I want to thank all of your Chapter Advisor Board (CAB) and Neighborhood Group Leaders (NGLs) for their continuous time and energy required to keep your chapter successful and flowing smoothly. Our chapter is rec- ognized by other areas of the country as a leader in providing quality programs and meetings. This is due to the wonderful CAB and NGL ladies in your Ft. Lauderdale Chapter. Thank you again.

I will briefly mention the Annual Meeting held in October at Benvenuto’s in Boynton Beach. Our attendance was nice with ninety ladies and seven young ladies who provided us with a fabulous fashion show. Thank you Lori and our younger generation, such an inspiration. Our guest speaker, Gail Yellen, serger inspirer, showed various ideas for embellishing with the serger. Her two classes, prior and after the Annual Meeting were very informative. And thank you Bobby Speigel for hosting Gail in your home and Kay for arranging our meeting room.

I want to thank those who helped with the Annual Meeting, Lori from Sew Much Fun, for all your donations, especially the ScanNCut, Laura and Dave from Laura’s Sew & Vac for the big basket and sewing machine, Ellie Crowder and Aliece Bristol for the donations of classes, Rosanne and Karen Tucker for the beautiful raffle bas- ket arrangements, Bobby, Ann, Kay and Mariana for selling tickets, Chris, Carol and Belinda for the registration table, Kay, Karen T and Kate for the center table arrangements, Diva for the great photos, Kay and Judy for the new site selection, Faye for the zippers, Judy for the printing and Karen S for keeping us straight and every- body’s help with table favors, set-up, input, suggestions, support and clean up. It takes a great crew to accom- plish a wonderful Annual Meeting. Thank you all.

Starting in 2016, we will be sending the Status Thimble newsletter electronically to members with an email ad- dress. Please have patience until we work out the kinks. If your friend receives their newsletter and you don't, contact Judy or myself. Everybody should receive their copy, email or USPS by the middle of January.

We will be offering 2 new Special Interest Groups, alternating monthly at the Coral Springs library, 2nd Wednesday of the month @10:30-12:30. January is Sergers and February is Machine Embroidery and March is Sergers, continuing to alternate monthly.

Check your Status Thimble for several big vendors-sponsored events coming up. There are quite a few.

I hope Thanksgiving was a special day for all and know the month of December will be celebrated by many. Please take a moment to reflect on our gifts and be thankful for all of them. Let’s look forward to a beautiful year and fill it with lots of sewing.

Donna

Hollywood

Marlene Gray from Meals on Wheels came to the Hollywood meeting and picked up the 585 placemats the group made for their clients. She was very happy to re- ceive them and I am really proud of the ladies in our group for all their hard work.

Boca Raton Daytime

Once again the Boca group led a children’s sewing project at the Glades Branch Library. The girls all took home a tote bag that they created at the workshop. Thanks to our fabulous instructors Sarla Malani, Ruth Leeds, Diane Wenman, Kay Hurley, Aliece Bristol, Ann Reardon, Linda Lane, Elisabet Sartarelli, Lee Fleishman, Rosanne Cos- ta, Chris Allen, and Carol Planthaber. Special thanks to Aliece for her organizing talents.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Pembroke Pines

At our September meeting we enjoyed the exchange of Thanksgiving door hangers. They were all very original. We presented Carol Short with a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution and dedication of making wheel chairs bags for the Memorial Manor of Pembroke Pines. We really appreciate her hard work. Happy Sewing, Mariana Septien 6

Neighborhood Group News

Port St. Lucie

Our October meeting was at Laura’s. The project this month was gift bags. Connie gave the lesson and she also demonstrated how to make cord- ed bowls. Several of us made adult bibs for a rehabilitation center in Port Saint Lucie, one of our charity projects. Two of our group (sisters) took a class at Laura’s in Palm Beach and made tufted foot stools. For directions or any questions regarding this group contact Belinda Adkins, 484-686-8456 or [email protected].

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

North Palm Beach

We were wowed in October with Katy Jones presentation of a “Candy Wrapper Pouch.” She gave step-by-step directions for making these ver- satile pouches. I am sure many of our members will be making these. Laura and Dave did a demo of the new little quilting machine for our “What’s New” Segment.

In November Jane demonstrated the “Ten Minute Table Runner” which can also be turned into two nice placemats if you make your strips wider. A few members who have made these before added tips of their own. We welcomed Laura and Dave back after their too long absence for their ill- ness. The “Sew and Tells” were just wonderful.

Machine Embroidery Group In October we learned about machine bobbin work. Colleen showed sam- ples of designs and designs by various designers which are suitable for bobbin work. Dave demoed bobbin work on one of the Brother sewing machines. In November Jane showed different samples of designs on fleece. We discussed “to hoop or not to hoop,” stabilizers and needles. Samples included trapunto, redwork, appliqué and reverse appliqué and chenille as well as denser designs.

Neighborhood Group Meetings Neighborhood meetings are great places to meet with new and old friends. All neighborhood groups are open to any member and guests. Guests may attend two meetings before joining the Guild. Bring and share your sewing projects. Ask for help with problems you may be having. Please call first when attending at private homes. Occasionally, it’s necessary for programs to change after the newsletter is printed. The latest information is at www.asgfl.org.

Your attendance at programs sponsored by the American Sewing Guild may be digitally recorded through photographs and/or video recordings. These images may be used on our website or in our newsletters. If you do not wish your image to be published, please notify the photographer or Group Leader. All members are welcome to attend the Chapter Board meetings. You need to contact any board member (see page 2) in advance to confirm time and location. We welcome member questions, comments and suggestions.
