The mission of The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research is to produce knowledge to cure disease.

2 Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research | 2018–2019 Annual Report Two thousand eighteen was a year of achievements that has set the pace for our continuing growth Our scientists made breakthrough discoveries in producing knowledge to cure disease. We’ve had remarkable results in treating lupus, endometriosis and post-partum depression, while also making advancements with to restore limb movement and decoding signals the nervous system uses to communicate immune status and inflammation to and from the . In pursuing these breakthroughs, we doubled the size of our grants portfolio since 2015, garnering more than $76 million in funding last year for work in our labs. Building on our strategic partnerships with marquee names such as GE and United Therapeutics, we forged a new, exciting scientific collaboration with Boston Scientific, and “spun out” Sanguistat, a new company seeking to bring the neural tourniquet to market, a bioelectronic therapy that treats bleeding in post-partum mothers and may have use in protecting soldiers from grievous wounds in combat. We continue to grow our cancer and neurological research in partnership with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. On the philanthropic front, we received more than $20 million in endowed gifts to the Feinstein Institute, including a gift from the Elmezzi Foundation for the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular , and a gift from the Karches Family Foundation to support distinguished chair positions. Our growth as a major scientific institute and the home of research for the entire Northwell Health system is dramatic, fast and very exciting. To best manage it, we have embarked on a reorganization. Inspired by the National Institutes of Health, we are now known as The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research at Northwell Health. The “new” Feinstein Institutes will be composed of five institutes led by internationally recognized leaders in their fields: Behavioral , led by John Kane; Bioelectronic Medicine, led by Yousef Al Abed; Cancer Research, led by Richard Barakat; Health Innovations and Outcomes Research, led by Tom McGinn; and Molecular Medicine, led by Betty Diamond. The five-institute structure gives us greater focus and accountability, and it allows us to tell our story simply and with power. With help from our board of directors and indispensable support from Northwell Health, we have laid the groundwork for great things to come in 2019 and beyond.

Assistant Professor Monowar Aziz, PhD, received a $1.68 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to examine a ’s role in increasing inflammation and injury in sepsis to develop new therapies. Dr. Aziz believes the key to a new treatment may be the mechanisms of inflammatory protein called extracellular cold-inducible RNA- binding protein (eCIRP).

Professor Todd Lencz, PhD, received a $2.75 million NIH grant to study cognitive genomics as a window on neurodevelopment and psychopathology. Because cognitive deficits are often the most disabling feature of mental illness, this research can provide critical insights into the treatment of schizophrenia, and other disorders.

Professor Michael A. Diefenbach, PhD, received a $3.5 million R01 grant from the NIH National Cancer Institute to develop a post-surgical care program for stage II bladder cancer patients and their caregivers. This is the first study to address the needs of bladder cancer patients and their caregivers with the goal of reducing infections and unplanned nurse/ER visits while improving their quality of life.

4 Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research | 2018–2019 Annual Report Professor Valentin A. Pavlov, PhD, received a $1.65 million R01 grant from the NIH to examine the vagus nerve’s role in the inflammation and metabolism associated with sepsis. Having a better understanding of the nervous system’s signaling during sepsis could lead to the identification of new therapeutic targets within the scope of bioelectronic medicine.

Assistant Professor Myoungsun Son, PhD, received a $2 million NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) grant to study mechanisms of polarization of monocytes by DAMPs/PAMPs and C1q. Dr. Son believes this study has implications for treating and preventing lupus and autoimmune disease and conditions on non-resolving inflammation.

Professor Larry Miller, MD, received a $1.4 million NIH grant to develop and test a non-invasive method that accesses nerves in the chest and abdomen. Gaining non-invasive access to these nerves has the potential to drive development of bioelectronic medicine devices for treatment of conditions like obesity, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
