The major rulings of this just-completed Supreme Court term show there are no longer five votes for a conservative result - a historic shift. From the time President Richard Nixon's fourth court nominee was confirmed in 1971 until Justice Antonin Scalia's death in February, there have always been five ideologically conservative Republican appointees on the bench. No longer. Indeed, if Hillary Clinton is elected president in November, a liberal majority may dominate the court for decades to come. The decisions over this term might have looked like a mixed bag of liberal and conservative outcomes. But a clear pattern was at work. When Justice Anthony M. Kennedy joined with Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, they formed a liberal majority. When Kennedy voted with the conservative bloc - Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. - the court almost always split 4-4. When there is a deadlock, the lower court ruling is affirmed, but without setting any Supreme Court precedent. -

CELEBRITY JUSTICE SUPREME COURT EDITION Richard L. Hasen† T IS NOT YOUR IMAGINATION. Supreme Court Justices are in the news more than ever, whether they are selling books, testifying before Congress, addressing a Federalist Society or American Constitution Society event, or just talking to a Muppet on Sesame Street.1 The Inumber of books about the Court and particular Justices continues to grow. A website (www.scotusmap.com) is now devoted to tracking the Justices’ movements as they crisscross the country (and the world) speaking to various audiences. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is even promoted on T- shirts as the “Notorious R.B.G.,”2 a riff on the name of famous rap artist Notorious B.I.G. THE WAY PAVERS: ELEVEN SUPREME COURT-WORTHY WOMEN * MEG PENROSE Introduction Four women have served as associate justices on the United States Supreme Court. Since the Court’s inception in 1789, more than 160 individuals have been nominated to serve as Supreme Court justices.1 Five nominees, or roughly 3 percent, have been women.2 To help put this gender dearth in perspective, more men named “Samuel” have served as Supreme Court justices than women.3 Thirteen U.S. presidents have each nominated more people to the Supreme Court than the total number of women that have served on the Court.4 Finally, there are currently as many Catholics serving on the Supreme Court as the number of women confirmed in the Court’s entire history.5 Women, once thought of as “one-at-a-time-curiosities” on the bench, now constitute nearly one-third of all state and federal judges.6 They occupy the highest posts on state supreme courts and can be found, in similar numbers, at the trial and appellate * Meg Penrose is a full Professor at Texas A&M University School of Law. Investigator Spotlight: Huda Y. Zoghbi, MD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine It is hard to believe that the 7th World Rett Syndrome Congress has come and gone with great success! Now with summer upon us, IRSF continues to move the spotlight to the committed scientists who have made the World Congress an impressive, high quality meeting with outstanding presentations and discussions. This month we are honored to focus on Dr. Huda Zoghbi who had co-chaired the Basic Research Symposium at the World Congress along with Dr. Gail Mandel. Together, they had produced an exciting lineup of speakers who were encouraged to present new, unpublished data in an effort to foster new ideas that will help chart the course for Rett syndrome research. Dr. Zoghbi is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, the Director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital, and Professor of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She received her medical degree from Meharry Medical College and completed residency training in pediatrics and neurology at Baylor College of Medicine where she encountered her first Rett syndrome patient in 1983. Dr. Zoghbi was inspired to receive additional research training in the area molecular genetics and upon completion she joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine. In 1999, Dr. Zoghbi and collaborators including research fellow Ruthie Amir made a major breakthrough for Rett syndrome. They had discovered that mutations in MECP2, the gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2, causes Rett syndrome. -

MESSENGERMESSENGER EEXTREMEXTREME EEXPLORATIONXPLORATION — Deborah Domingue, MESSENGER Deputy Project Scientist, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory The first half of 2004 has been an exciting time for planetary exploration with the successful encounter and sampling of Comet Wild 2 by Stardust, the landing of two Mars rovers, orbital operations at Mars by three spacecraft, and the arrival of Cassini at Saturn. This month we wished “Bon Voyage” to the MESSENGER spacecraft, which successfully launched from Cape Canaveral on August 3, 2004, and began its journey to the innermost planet of our solar system, Mercury. MESSENGER is a MEcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging mission that will orbit Mercury for one Earth year (beginning in March 2011) following three flybys (in January and Septem- ber 2008 and October 2009) of the planet. It will be our first return to Mercury in over 30 years! The Mariner 10 spacecraft flew past Mer- cury three times in 1974 and 1975 and collected information on less than half the planet. MESSENGER will provide the first global map of Mercury, in addition to detailed information on the composition and structure of Mercury’s crust, its geologic history, the nature of Mercury’s thin exosphere and dynamic magnetosphere, and the makeup of its core and polar materials. MERCURY:A PLACE OF EXTREMES Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, has a highly elliptical orbit such that its distance from the Sun ranges from 46 million kilometers (29 million miles) to 70 million kilometers (43 million miles). Because of its slow rotation, Mercury’s day (sunrise to sunrise) actually lasts two Mercury years (88 Earth days of dark and 88 Earth days of daylight). -

Landis Welcome to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conference, “Parkinson’s Disease 2014: Advancing Research, Improving Lives.” Remarkable new discoveries and technological advances are rapidly changing the way we study the biological mechanisms of Parkinson’s disease, identify paths to improved treatments, and design effective clinical trials. Elucidating mechanisms and developing and testing effective interventions require a diverse set of approaches and perspectives. The NINDS has organized this conference with the primary goal of seeking consensus on, and prioritizing, research recommendations spanning clinical, translational, and basic Parkinson’s disease research that we support. We have assembled a stellar and dedicated group of session chairs and panelists who have worked collaboratively to identify emerging research opportunities in Parkinson’s research. While we have divided our working groups into three main research areas, we expect each will inform the others over the course of the next two days, and we look forward to both complementary and unique perspectives. -
