Come and hook a Mandala, which is a Sanskrit word that means Circle. A Mandala is a symmetrical geometric design, usually enclosed in a circle. Although the circle may contain other shapes within it, such as a square or triangle or be bordered on the outside by one of these shapes, the circle remains the primary feature of all Mandalas. They are often used as a tool for meditation, to seek healing, self awareness and wholeness and provide the opportunity to use wonderful colours in the design.

LEN de GRAAF: PAINTING The technique of using beeswax in yarn painting was started by the Huichol (pronounced wee-chol) Indians over 200 years ago. In this 2 day workshop each participant will receive an 8” x 10” wooden panel frame that has been beeswaxed 6 times. Additional Material Fee: $40 Each participant is asked to bring a landscape picture that inspires them (preferably a picture with lots of curves). Using this picture as a jump off point you will sketch a brief outline on the beeswaxed board with a marker. Then the fun begins! Choosing from a wide selection of Briggs & Little 2 ply yarn you will start your yarn painting. Using a needle the yarn is pressed into the beeswax which acts as an adhesive and holds the yarn in place. At the end of the 2 day workshop you will have created a unique piece of art that is worthy of hanging on your wall! And who knows, Yarn Painting might even become addictive!?! ALL LEVELS

NEW MATERIALS NEW TECHNIQUES - PART 1 Material fee: $40 to be paid

When I work my goal is to find ways to create a seamless and meaningful integration of non-traditional elements with the hand hook surface and the narrative. For more than a decade I've been exploring ways that subject, form and content can be enhanced and altered when new materials and techniques are introduced. This three-day workshop is inspired by this experimentation.

In this exploratory workshop, each day starts with a short theme based digital presentation followed by a creative -based exercise with the intention to consider design and the creative process in new and unexpected ways. Late mornings I will demonstrate techniques and then you will begin your own organic experimentation based on the technique(s) demonstrated. There will be lots of time for you to experiment and work independently. You will be encouraged to discuss, share your work and process with your fellow students.

When you complete the class, you will take with you a set of skills that are easily transferable to your own work along with paper-based samples, -based samples, and print resources.

Materials you will work with in this class include, but are not limited to, wool fleece, roving & yarns, silk, fabrics, leather, metal, beads, found objects, embroidery floss.

Techniques you will explore include needle wool & silk, hand , applique, some leatherwork, installing grommets, crotchet.

Some preparation is required.

NEW MATERIALS NEW TECHNIQUES - PART 2

Material fee: $40 to be paid

This NEW class is for hand hooking artists who have taken the New Materials, New Techniques Part 1 class. What makes Part 2 different is the increased level of experimentation. You’ll be introduced to a range of new materials and techniques with an emphasis on attachments and altering a two-dimensional form into a three-dimensional one. You will also learn the technique I use to install zippers into my work. Some prep is required.
