he CAF Winter Staff Conference Ttook place on February 24 to 27. Nothing constructive was decided and no explanation was given to the participants about the miserable state of the finances of our organization. This is why you will not read any report about it, since the emptiness that was the main point of this meeting would only allow you to get a better idea of what is infinity…

ay our members and friends not be Mdiscouraged by these facts ! Our Unit is strong and healthy, and it carries on as faithful as before to the goals it gave itself when it was formed. These goals are the same as the CAF goals, the true CAF which was created in 1957 by Lloyd Nolen and his friends, in honor 520 BY ROY GRINNELL and dignity.

he French Wing’s activities are, in these Tearly days of Spring, dedicated to the SPECIAL “CARAVELLE” annual checks of our airplanes and their preparedness for the season which started with the meeting of dozens of Associations in Le Bourget Air & Space Museum on March 26 and 27.

his “Carrefour de l’Air” in the Air & TSpace Museum was a real success which allowed us to get acquainted with numerous Associations, and to get them to meet the French Wing. Let us hope that Madame Maunoury will reiterate this event next year.

The first volume of “Air Forces - Vietnam” has just been published by Éditions Zéphyr. Sub-titled “Operation Desoto”, it has been drawn and colored by J.L. Cash, a talented artist who is also a member of the French Wing since his real name is Julien Lepelletier !

This first volume is available as normal or as a limited and numbered edition, and signed by the authors if you order from Éditions Zéphyr.

On November 22, 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas. Vice-President Lindon B. Johnson chooses, two days later, to support Saïgon with Memorandum 273 which makes official the sending of American troops in Vietnam…

The series “Air Forces - Vietnam” tells the adventures of Jimmy Booster, enrolled in the US Navy during the Vietnam conflict. In 1964, the hero comes aboard aircraft carrier USS Constellation who is en route for Asia, in order to support the South Vietnamese forces. He is posted to the fighter group VF-142 equipped with the famous F-4 Phantom fighter, and he gets straight into combat after the incident of the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2, 1964…

This book includes Julien’s comics drawings which are printed over 48 pages, so captivating that after reading them, one is eager to know what is going to happen next (That will be in volume 2). The book carries on with numerous authentic photographs, many of which have never been published before, and historical and technical texts which explain in great details the story of this modern conflict which is generally known only in its main phases.

The book has a total of 88 pages and it only costs 20 euros. A very good value, and you will get plenty for your money. A big Bravo to Julien whose immense talent guarantees a successful future. Hats off to Julien !

Article : Bertrand Brown - Photos : Udo K. Haafke (9) and Eduard Marmet (1) The Caravelle, designed by Sud-Aviation (former SNCASE) was the symbol of the rebirth of the French aviation industry in the 1950s. Despite being an innovative design, the Caravelle failed to attract many customers outside of Europe and Africa. The first generation of jetliners was dominated by Boeing’s 707 and Douglas’ DC-8. This was especially true in North America, where the Caravelle was never a success. Nevertheless the « fast, comfortable and safe Caravelle », as General de Gaulle called it, served with distinction around the world from 1959 to 2005.

Answering to a French government specification for a medium-range capable of carrying 55 to 65 passengers and a ton of freight over 1,240 at a speed of 372 mph, the Caravelle prototype flew on May 27, 1955, in . Although the Caravelle was not the first to enter commercial service, it was the first truly successful one (Note : The Comet entered commercial service as early as 1952 but design flaws led to several fatal crashes early in its career. The Comet fleet was grounded until these problems were solved in the late 1950s). Differing little from the prototype, the Caravelle I/IA was the first type to be delivered to . Powered by Rolls-Royce Avon RA.29 Mk 522 or 526 with more thrust than those used on the prototype, it could carry up to 80 passengers and had a MTOW of 43.5 tons.

Madame de Gaulle and Paul Moroni, ’s vice-president, during the chris- tening of the “Lorraine”, the first Caravelle received by Air France, on March 24,1959. This aircraft, a Caravelle I, was later used by General de Gaulle for transportation. Caravelles were used as presidential aircraft until 1980, and transported French gov- ernment VIPs until 1992.

A Caravelle III christened “Orléanais” bearing the colours of Air France. All Air France Caravelles were given the name of a French region, and were used until March 1981. The type III was powered by Avon RA.527 or RA.527B with greater thrust, increasing the MTOW from 43.5 to 48 tons. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

8 “Comtat Venaissin” was another Caravelle III flown by Air France. A total of 85 Caravelle III were built. Air France operated 47 Caravelle (types I/IA/III). All but one Caravelle I or IA were converted to Caravelle III in the early 1960s. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) was the second to order the Caravelle, and initiated scheduled operations with the type in May 1959, shortly after Air France. Here, a type III is seen landing at Dusseldorf in 1973. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

Royal Air Maroc, born from the merger of Air Atlas and Air Maroc in 1957, received its first Caravelle in 1960 but this only entered commercial service a year later. CN-CCZ was a type III, seen here in 1973. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

9 More than one Caravelle ended up in Africa in the 1970s and 1980s, such as this type III spotted in Orly in 1981. It carries the livery of Intercontinental Airlines, a charter operator based in Nigeria. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

Alitalia received the first of its four Caravelle III in 1960. They were all converted to type VI-N between late 1961 and June 1962 in Toulouse. The Caravelle VI-N was fitted with more powerful RA.29 Mk 531 and 531B, increasing the MTOW to 50 tons. Fifty-two type VI-N were built, and five Caravelle III were converted into VI-N. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

Corse Air international, now Corsairfly, was created in 1981 and operated Caravelle VI-N, which were replaced with in 1988. This Caravelle VI-N, photographed on the Basel-Mulhouse airport in October 1975, was previously used by the Yugoslav government. (Photo Eduard Marmet)

10 was another early Caravelle client. Its first acquisition was a type VI-N, which was delivered on January 1961 and began commercial operations less than a month later. OO-SRF was photographed in Germany in 1977. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

The Caravelle type VI-R made its in February 1961. Its RA.29 Mk 532R et 533R were equipped with thrust reversers, which replaced the brake chute. MTOW was increased to 51 tons. EC-ARI was a type VI-R flown by , a now- defunct branch of . (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

A total of 56 Caravelle VI-R were built. This example was operated by Luxembourg-based in 1978. (Photo Udo K. Haafke).

Minerve was a charter operator based in Le Bourget airport and used a type VI-R before acquiring Douglas DC-8. The Caravelle VI-R could be externally distinguished from previous models by the bigger cockpit windows, designed to improved visibility.

The author would like to thank M. Udo K. Haafke for sharing his extensive collection of Caravelle photographs.
